Coburg Tiger talls nominated to oversee debutant Karmichael Hunt
* Peter Kogoy
* From: The Australian
* June 08, 2010
COBURG Tigers coach David Newett is tossing up between Jayden Post and Graham Polak, both with senior AFL experience, to pick up million-dollar Gold Coast recruit Karmichael Hunt when he debuts in the VFL on Saturday.
"I'm expecting Guy McKenna (Gold Coast coach) to start Hunt across the backline to get a feel of the pace of the game," Newett said yesterday. "At this stage I'm not thinking about playing a tagger on him. Very unlikely. My best guess is that McKenna will start him in a defensive role to start to give him a chance to have a good look at the ball coming towards him."
Should McKenna's game plan play into Newett's thinking, his options are to play either Polak or Post.
Of the pair, Polak is the more experienced although he's listed as a mature-aged rookie on the Richmond senior list, having previously played 73 games with Fremantle.
Polak is on the comeback trail after sustaining a serious brain injury after being struck by a Melbourne tram in 2008.
Post played seven senior games with Richmond last season, having been picked up the year before in the national draft in the second round and 26th overall.
Both have a sizeable height advantage over the 186cm Hunt, with Post (195cm) slightly taller than Polak.
"A final decision won't be made until Friday night at the team selection meeting," Newett said.
Like their senior counterparts at Richmond, the Coburg Tigers have had a slow start to the season, before bouncing back with a 15-point win over Bendigo on Saturday.
On the other hand McKenna's Gold Coast heads to the Highgate Recreation Reserve in suburban Craigieburn coming off a 105-point thrashing at the hands of the Northern Bullants.
"I'm not reading too much into that result," Newett said. "McKenna has got a young talented list of players and were only a point down at quarter-time and who came up against the Bullants with Simon Wiggins, Brock McLean and Lachie Henderson all having had senior AFL experience."
For Coburg general manager Lee Fraser, the newly built Highgate ground will be bursting at the seams come game day, with the match televised live into Victoria on ABC1.
"We got about 3000 through the gate for Box Hill when the ground was officially opened," Fraser said. '
"I'm expecting that crowd figure to double having heavily promoted Karmichael's debut with the Gold Coast and it being a public holiday weekend."

Tough baptism for Hunt
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
June 09, 2010
KARMICHAEL Hunt faces the prospect of being tagged in his first game of football, with Coburg VFL coach David Newett warning he would not receive a free ride.
Rugby convert Hunt will make his VFL debut against Coburg at Craigieburn on Saturday afternoon, the first game in a short stint before being spelled again by the Gold Coast.
Newett admits he has no idea what sort of player Hunt will be, or even where he will play. And while he will target Gold Coast veterans Sam Iles and Daniel Harris, he said he would have no hesitation latching onto Hunt if he starts winning the ball.
"We have no idea where he's going to play. It's really hard to get a gauge on where he's at with no footage, and no prior games to review, so we will go in with an open mind, and take him on board like any other opposition player. But if he's causing trouble we will be accountable for him," he said.
"They have a couple of really experienced VFL boys playing in Iles and Harris, and if he fits into the midfield, he will be surrounded by experienced players and if he goes down back he will do well. I am not sure if he will go forward. Where does he play?"
Newett said Coburg would not obsess over Hunt, but rather concentrate on another strong team performance.
"From our point of view, it's all about the Coburg footy club and the Richmond players. But it's great for footy," Newitt said.
"We have the opportunity to come up against one of the new rugby boys. It's exciting and it will be interesting to see how he goes."
Newett spent two years as a development coach at North Melbourne before taking on his new role, and is confident Hunt can succeed.
He believes Richmond's Irish recruit Jamie O'Reilly will one day make it as an AFL player.
Coburg games normally only attract several hundred spectators, but the club is hopeful the attendance will be significantly boosted by Hunt.

He'll do SFA
-
He'll do SFA
I saw the footage of him training and skills-wise he is good but when they threw him into the mix to win the ball he ran in straight lines and struggled to get his hands on it even when his team mates were looking for him so I agree - he will do very little.

Thanks heaps OE. Only 10 minutes ago I was talking to someone about not getting the ABC VFL coverage up here. Will be very interesting to watch.

Ch 9 news said they're expecting a crowd of 5000 tomorrow at Craigieburn.

Troy Taylor isn't playing this week because he got one week's suspension for front on contact.

And the bloke (Houli I think?) that punched him about 4 times after the contact?

More than 6000 fans are expected to swarm to Highgate Recreation Reserve, which would double the record attendance at the venue.
By starting Karmichael Hunt in the forward line, club officials hope it will help him learn to read the play, although he faces a tough initiation. Coburg Tigers coach David Newett has suggested AFL players Graham Polak or Jayden Post will be his direct opponent.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/time-to-show-if-hunt-has-what-it-takes-20100611-y3mz.html
Coburg general manager Lee Fraser successfully lobbied AFL Victoria to get the game televised on the ABC, saying Hunt's debut "was just too good an opportunity to miss."
... the ABC will telecast the Coburg v Gold Coast match from 1pm on ABC1, and will be live streaming the game to the rest of Australia. The game starts at 1.10pm.
Fraser has confidence in the new ground to cope.
"The beauty of this facility is that it can cater for a big turnout," he said of the revamped arena, 27 kilometres from Melbourne.
"What could have been pretty quiet, with the long weekend, has turned out to be a bit of a bonus for us," Fraser said.
Fraser is excited by the exposure the expected crowd and telecast will bring the club and its sponsors. A crowd of over 3000 attended the April 24 opening of the ground, and Coburg is hoping the two big 'event days' help build a link with the broader region. Coburg shares its home games between Craigieburn and its traditional base, ABD Group Stadium in Harding Street, Coburg.
The prospect of forbidding weather was the only dampener upon Fraser's hopes for a big turn-out. A cloudy, showery day, is forecast, with a top of 13 degrees.
Mobile sales of food and drink will supplement the existing services at the ground, and a new scoreboard is being installed.
Fans are advised to arrive early to take advantage of limited parking. Under an initiative to cement bonds with the local community, patrons wearing their Essendon and District Football League polo shirts, or showing EDFL club memberships, will be admitted at half price.
Highgate Reserve is found at the corner of Cleveland Drive & Grand Boulevarde, Craigieburn. Melway map reference: 386 J3

Toy looks a superb player.
Rance.... :banghead
Post and Polak looking ok. Polo getting his hands on it
-
there is very little to get excited about this performance, gee some players on our list is average. Rance is gone- high hopes for him have amounted to little, must be traded at the end of the year, Hicks to small, Roberts still overweight, Gourdis cleaned up early by the rugby player, Morton and Polo- very average so far etc etc etc.

Whats the ruling with Gold Coast listed players?
Who are already listed and who need to still be drafted. For instance players like Day? If they don't pick him in there first 3 picks can we pick him up at 4?
What about Ar-Chee? Do they need to draft him this year or is he already drafted?
Or are all players already locked to Gold Coast?

I think Ah-Chee is from up here which gives Gold coast first dibs on him pope. Dont know about the others.

Ah-Chee was taken in the rookie draft this year, along with Harris, Coad, Stanley and Iles.
-
Not sure Popelord. They were able to sign up 12 17 year olds, 5 rookies and then all these local (Qld) kids. I'm presuming everyone else is up for grabs come draft time although GC17 having first pick in every draft plus being able to sign up uncontracted players will give them the advantage.
Based on today only Browne and Postie have an AFL future. It's the best game I've seen Browne play.
Polly has been good as a tall lead up marking option.
Polo useful and working hard but this may be his level.
Nahas busy.
Rance has got a fair bit of it but he's got the tram tracks disease and doesn't go the first option which gets himself into trouble.
Morton is struggling big time.
Gourdis is gawn.
The rest have been unsighted.

Polly goal :gotigers

Be interested to know if any GC players are GC listed or if they have to draft them next year. Its a bit confusing, is Toy locked to GC?
Polak is looking very solid. Should be still in our 1s after the Port win.
Dont think either coach has coached well. Weve had Morton up the ground all day even when we had the wind. Hunt isn't getting near it but when he's around GC seem busy. Get him running with a Webberley or a Polo get him into the game.

Clifton from near the boundary. Goal! :gotigers

Yep. One of the 17 year olds they picked up last year.

6500 mike hunt should be pretty excited about that. I don't think he saw that many fans at an NRL game.

Really enjoying the live streaming....Living in WA for last 22 years means I have never ever seen a Coburg game before.

GWS should have waited to see how Hunt went be for getting Izzy.
It's going to be a real battle for him, going from something he dominated to basically starting all over again. I wonder what sought of influence they think he is going to exert on the game. You would think that Polly would have been a safer bet really.
-
too many VFL listed players playing on the ball.

It'd be stupid to analyze Hunt now. He'll take 2-3 years to properly be judged. 1st game ever lol he did some good things, looked completely lost at times. He needs more development that anyone but he has huge upsides. Looks to have clean hands and can tackle anyone going around. I think if he got his fitness up he could be a really good run with player. Following someone who will find teh ball and feeding the ball out. I think his kicking will let himself down in the future as well as marking but I think he could be a handy run with player.
Issy will be a lot better than Hunt. He's younger, he can kick plus he has a big leap and a great set of hands. Izzy will be miles better than Hunt.
-
Good to see Polak doing well, lets hope he can bring that to the big time!!

Yeah it's going to tough for him cranny, probably a bit tougher than for the irish boys. Hunt has been recruited as much for his marketing as his football, if not more.
Looking at the crowd today and the fact that ABC streamed the game shows he brings attention.( hopefully now they will stream games each week.) Notice the moblie billboards stationed around the ground?
By the time the novelty value wears off they will probably have got their money's worth in exposure, and maybe a footballer if they are lucky.
wonder what sort of exposure it will get in queensland media tonight?

Two in a row for Coburg

Coburg has notched back-to-back wins for the first time this season after defeating Gold Coast at Craigieburn today.
An eight-goal third-quarter blitz set up a 47-point win in front of more than 6000 fans.
Robin Nahas booted four goals and collected 25 possessions as one of the best players on the field, while Graham Polak continued his purple patch with 20 touches, nine marks and two goals.
Dean Polo was outstanding across half back, particularly when the game was on the line in the first half, picking up 25 possessions, and Jeromey Webberley was busy all afternoon and racked up 20 disposals.
Gold Coast kicked the first three goals of the match, but Coburg dominated proceedings until three quarter time, when the lead was 64 points.

Have to say - I watched the game via Aunty's streaming and couldn't have Gourdis in my best at all. And Webberley was most definitely one of our top 3 best with Polak and Nahas.
-
I liked Jayden Post today. Still very young.
Roberts is a real worry imho. Has to go surely!
-
Can anyone tell me anything about James Lawton.
I really liked his game today and think if he is as young as he looks may be a chance to be picked up at the end of the year. I would have him before Relton Roberts on todays form at least.
I admit i havent seen him until today but he must be showig some form as he started in the ressies this year and ow is in the senoirs.

-
Good to see Polak doing well, lets hope he can bring that to the big time!!
well ni hope for TV sake he goes ok tomorrow, I reckoned Polak should have been in on back of good VFL form last week with tv needing plenty more time at vfl to build form
-
Nahas played well today i must admit. but gee he looks small even in todays game against alot of youngsters his so small even compared to them.
-
I reckon our defence will look infinitely better when we can fast-track Gourdis, Post, Rance and further down the track Grimes into it, and start weeding out the likes of McGuane, Moore and Thursfield.
I think Webberley proved today too that he was very stiff to be dropped. Farmer must have incriminating photo's of the coach or something. :lol
-
Based on todays game and current form the good i see going into next year is we wont be at the bottom of the ladder.
Even with all the consessions being thrown at them the gold coast are going to really struugle next year. I dont know how Daniel Harris ever got a game at AFL level he was crap today and was still in there better players.
Karmichael Hunt might be good in 2-3 years but has a long way to go before he becomes a good player. Thats IF he makes it at all, even when he did try and throw his weight around today it wasnt as bad as many would have thought. I do wish him all the luck in the world as it would be extrordinary if he did become a star but at this stage (yeah i know it was his first proper game) it looks more like a publicity stunt than a recuiting miracle.
P.S thanks for all the info on James Lawton :lol

Based on todays game and current form the good i see going into next year is we wont be at the bottom of the ladder.
Even with all the consessions being thrown at them the gold coast are going to really struugle next year. I dont know how Daniel Harris ever got a game at AFL level he was crap today and was still in there better players.

Round 9 Match Report
Coburg Tigers website
Seniors
We were greeted with a cold winters day on Saturday when we met the Gold Coast at Highgate.
Once again we were jumped with the Coasters kicking the first 2 goals but we steadied to kick 5 goals in the first term and have a lead by the end of the first break.
The 2nd quarter was a tight scrap with neither side able to get on top and at half time we had a lead of 11 points.
In the 3rd quarter we dominated but if it was not for some inaccurate kicking the lead should have been greater and in the final quarter we seemed to switch off to a small degree letting G.C outscore us but still registered a solid win.
Best players:
Nahas with 30 possessions and 4 goals and was dominant both up forward and on ball.
Power controlled the half back line and on ball and kicked the ball into our 50m line 5 times and set up numerous goals.
Polo,Rayson and Kahlefedlt were all controlled the back line and were ablely supported by Rance and Gourdis after a slow start.
Polak again was a focal target up forward and his strong marking was a highlight.
All over it really was a team effort
Goal kickers: Nahas 4, Webberley 2, Polak 2, Lawton 2, Hicks 2, Duhau, Carnell, Power, Polo, Roberts
Coburg: 5.5 7.11 15.17 17.21-123
Gold Coast: 4.1 6.4 6.7 11.10-76
Reserves
We met Box Hill at their home ground and we were keen for revenge after they humiliated us on Anzac Day by over 100 points.
We led at every change and while not having the game in our control it was a magnificent turn around and very similar to the Sandringham game where we could have such a massive transformation after only 6 weeks.
Nick Westhoff kicked his 2nd successive bag of 5 goals and will be pushing for a senior spot if he continues this form.
Alroy Gilligan was a dangerous player playing on a wing and in the past year or so has only played as a half forward,is now maturing into a great midfielder.
Nic Cattapan again got plenty of the ball and with 9 I50’s once again set up goals.
Tom Groves did another great shutdown job on Kitchener.
Chrsitian McErlain has not played 3 games after having a rough trot with hamstring injuries and he also will be putting his hand up for a Senior spot soon.
Goal Kickers: Westhoff 5, Dennis 3, Jordon , Bisetto, Fewster
Coburg: 3.5 6.7 9.9 11.13-79
Gold Coast: 1.3 4.7 7.10 9.13-67
The split round means we have a break this weekend and then we head down to Werribee on June 26th and it is an ABC game.
