Player assessment
Powerfully built medium forward. Was Gippsland Power's leading goalkicker in the TAC Cup with 42.

Guy on SEN just said MacDonald is classy but doesn't show it that often. A finisher offerer.
-
Speculator by the sounds of it.
-
184 cm and 87 kg. Has abit of bulk about him. I like it. No runts as in the past.
Welcome Dean.

Sounds like he might be a little bit lazy. A bit of maturity might flush that out of him. and a few right hooks from Jake King :lol

terrific around goals & can kick 60 easy. Richmond supporter, the ball is in his court. Just turned 18 a few months back & just finished VCE.

2010 National Draft - Dean MacDonald Pick 51
DOB: 6/7/92
Height: 185cm
Weight: 87kg
Club: Gippsland
WATCH DEAN MACDONALD HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/roarvisionarchive/tabid/11454/contentid/314439/default.aspx
In the RFC recruiters' words:
Dean is a very lively half forward who has the capabilities to kick goals in lots of different ways. He is an excellent set shot for goal but also has great crumbing ability and goal sense. He is a very strong contested mark with a real ability to run and jump at the footy. Dean also applies excellent defensive pressure with his willingness to chase combined with his outstanding leg speed.
Dean played the whole year with Gippsland Power and kicked 43 goals as a permanent forward which was a great effort considering it was his first year in the TAC system. Previously he had played junior and senior footy with Morwell.
Dean is very early in his development phase and we feel he has only scratched the surface as to the player he can become. With our coaching and development we feel he can add to the exciting traits he already possesses and become a fine player for the Richmond Football Club.
In his own words:
What type of player are you?
Quick, smart and a willing learner. Hard at the ball and fair.
Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
Mark LeCras, because he is quick, smart and good around the goals.
What are your strengths as a footballer?
Speed, ball-handling skills and kicking for goal. I can also mark very well.
What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Attack to defence, not that I'm bad. I could just make it a lot better.
Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
St Kilda, because my dad and brother barracked for them.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My dad, because he always gives me support and great advice. He also gives me positive feedback so I can improve, and it has worked.

Like the look of this kid, knows where the goals are, havent had a player like this for a while.
-
Looks a very good mark under pressure too. Is goal hungry, we need a dash of that. Seems to lack a bit of pace both off the mark and on change of direction but he can improve there. No worries with composure. Looks a great find, can't wait to see him in action.
-
Sounds like a good replacement for Nahas or King

Sounds like a good replacement for Nahas or King
Yes he certainly looks a forward pocket who could easily fill in at FF, in the mould of a Mark LeCras. Or should I say, ala LeCras
-
Need a small forward. Hopefully he turns out to be that
-
Sounds like a good replacement for Nahas or King
Sounds like he could play the role that Andy Collins played for us last year.

Tigermonk, go back to your campfire and your Lee Kernaghan CD's, and back to telling your toothless mates how good you used to be at footy.
not into that kind of music & dont have to tell my mates cause they remind me ;D but thanks for your personal concern
l dont care what your draft camp results are, cause thats all they are. results of punishment on paper dont make you a champion footballer as do stats that are worthless to the game ;D
thought you would have learnt that by now being a Richmond supporters that stats dont win games.
maybe the player had the flu, maybe the player had a injury, maybe the players is the next Buddy Franklin ;D l'm sure you said the same about Franklin, was he on the draft camp stats ??? well crane nose
Do more research you will find somewhere on google that speed is his weapon duh

Selection No.51: Dean MacDonald (Gippsland Power)
Player profile
"MacDonald kicked 43.18 in the TAC Cup this year, so he's a very nice kick at goal. He's very quick. He's 6"1 and can take a good mark, so we think he gives us something that we really needed at the club. He kicked four goals in a quarter during one of the TAC Cup finals and was really dominant."

Just did a quick check and as thought, Dean did not get selected for draft camp in Canberra so very hard to get a place in those lists if you don't compete.
You would have to probably go to club testing to check his speed or lack thereof OR wait and see for yourself.
-
Good feeling bout our gaelic Deano, Clan McDonald were always tough as nails, lets hope he carries this tradition on.

Thanks for that info Redan, he's hardly gonna make the top 10 if he didn't compete, my apologies to him for posting those results as if he did.
Can I just reiterate that I am excited about him coming to Richmond, I never actually said that he had no speed, as usual TM cherry picked my post to misrepresent me. I think Dean McDonald looks a great prospect, and I'll just say it again, can't wait to see him play in a Richmond jumper

Bound for the big time
By Damen Francis
Latrobe Valley Express

MORWELL Tigers footballer Dean McDonald was one of four Gippsland Power players to be picked up by an AFL club in the 2010 national draft on Thursday night.
The 18 year-old was taken by Richmond at pick number 51 and joined former teammates Dyson Heppell (to Essendon with pick 8), Jed Lamb (to Sydney with pick 21) and Michael Ross (to Essendon with pick 80) on an 2011 AFL list.
Morwell Tigers president Daryl Couling described McDonald's drafting as ``a fantastic story''.
``He's come a long way, he hasn't been in the system too long and he's got great ability,'' Couling said.
``He was only with the Power for one year but I thought he would be rookie listed or go late in the draft.''
According to Couling McDonald has the ability but he now needs to learn about what it takes to be an AFL footballer.
``He's lightning quick and he has all the tricks, hopefully Richmond can teach him the discipline and fitness it takes to succeed in that league,'' he said.

New Tiger Dean Macdonald is strong and he's bold
Matt Windley

Dean Macdonald is just the man to replace Ben Cousins and take pressure off Dustin Martin.
ANOTHER draft, another AFL player donning a spectacular array of tattoos.
Keeping with family tradition, Dean MacDonald already has half of his right arm inked.
And with plans for more to come, the AFL's tattoo kings should be on the look out.
"The one with the lines around it, I got that when I was 16 because it's a tradition in our family that the boys get tattoos when they turn 16," he said.
"My old man got his tattoo when he was 16, against his parents' will, when he came up to Melbourne. After a few beers he went out and got one.
"My brother then got it a few years ago when he was 16 and I was talking to him about it and said that we should start a tradition. So here it is."
The powerfully built 185cm forward caught Richmond's eye with 43 goals for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup this year, including four goals in a quarter during one of the side's finals.
But the 18-year-old was caught on the hop when the Tigers came to town before the draft.
"I was just finishing an interview with another club and then I went out and got some Subway. I come back 10 minutes later and there were people in suits in my driveway," MacDonald said.

His old man going out for a few beers at 16....Ahhh nothing like a pub with a solid RSA policy. Mind you in Morwell getting tats and starting to drink at 16 is probably considered being a "late starter". ;D

Mac attack
By Tony Greenberg

Fri 26 Nov, 2010
There is a real X-factor about Richmond’s fourth pick (No. 51 overall) in the 2010 National Draft, Dean Macdonald . . .
That’s the learned opinion of Peter Francis, regional manager at Macdonald’s TAC Cup club Gippsland Power.
Francis, who played 158 games of league football with four clubs (Carlton, Fitzroy, Richmond and Essendon), and was a key member of Carlton’s 1979 premiership side, believes Macdonald has the potential to develop into an exciting forward at the elite level.
“Dean is very quick . . . he’s got those dancing feet. He’s also got good hands, and is a beautiful kick for goal,” Francis said.
“He had quite an impact with us this year, kicking 43 goals in the TAC Cup from a half-forward flank.
“His work rate is quite good and he’s got a good attitude. He’s just a really nice kid . . .
“And, there is a lot of development still left in him. You know, he’s really only had the one pre-season with us. The previous year, when he was at Morwell, he played two games in their seniors, and he kicked five goals twice at centre half-forward.
“So, he’s really got an enormous amount of upside . . .”

Let's hope he can meet the expectations of Francis :pray

The Campbells only slaughtered the McDonalds once, and that was in their sleep after enjoying their hospitality Glencoe as per custom they were supposed to be neutral in the glen. Because the Campbells were aligned with the English. In battle the McDonalds although outnumbered, made a pretty formidable geurilla force and they made sure there was plenty of pay back.
-
Kicked 3 goals for the thirds.
Hope dmac can kick some goals and make a mark at the coburg level asap.
-
Got named on the bench for this w/e

Congrats to the Big Mac

Good :cheers, be good to see how he goes.
-
Been keen to see this bloke for Richmond after Francis Jackson's big wrap.
-
Could actually get a game as a straight swap for King :-\ Love to see this fellow in action to see how he goes around goals. Might be just his fitness and defensive work that has kept him back so far???
-
injury as well, stripes.
Being a country kid he may also have had trouble adjusting to city life?

Hope the kid gets a run and he build on that during pre season.

Hope he gets a taste but it's going to be a mighty step up for DMac.

It goes a bit deeper than that Damo.
If you grow up in a country town and move to the city ..it's a different world.
A lot of the people i went to school with moved to Melbourne to work after leaving school but many of them had trouble adjusting to city life. The funny thing is that you never really got any indication until they went back "home". Most of them seemed happy enough, but obviously they weren't
