22 Nov, 2010 03:55 PMMORWELL Tigers footballer Dean McDonald was one of four Gippsland Power players to be picked up by an AFL club in the 2010 national draft on Thursday night.
The 18 year-old was taken by Richmond at pick number 51 and joined former teammates Dyson Heppell (to Essendon with pick
, Jed Lamb (to Sydney with pick 21) and Michael Ross (to Essendon with pick 80) on an 2011 AFL list.
Morwell Tigers president Daryl Couling described McDonald's drafting as ``a fantastic story''.
``He's come a long way, he hasn't been in the system too long and he's got great ability,'' Couling said.
``He was only with the Power for one year but I thought he would be rookie listed or go late in the draft.''
According to Couling McDonald has the ability but he now needs to learn about what it takes to be an AFL footballer.
``He's lightning quick and he has all the tricks, hopefully Richmond can teach him the discipline and fitness it takes to succeed in that league,'' he said.
