I reckon he's ready muscle-wise, TM, but his fitness is nowhere near up to scratch.  Needs a lot more cardio work.

New Tiger Dean Macdonald is strong and he's bold

Dean Macdonald is just the man to replace Ben Cousins and take pressure off Dustin Martin.

ANOTHER draft, another AFL player donning a spectacular array of tattoos.

Keeping with family tradition, Dean MacDonald already has half of his right arm inked.

And with plans for more to come, the AFL's tattoo kings should be on the look out.

"The one with the lines around it, I got that when I was 16 because it's a tradition in our family that the boys get tattoos when they turn 16," he said.

"My old man got his tattoo when he was 16, against his parents' will, when he came up to Melbourne. After a few beers he went out and got one.

"My brother then got it a few years ago when he was 16 and I was talking to him about it and said that we should start a tradition. So here it is."

The powerfully built 185cm forward caught Richmond's eye with 43 goals for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup this year, including four goals in a quarter during one of the side's finals.

But the 18-year-old was caught on the hop when the Tigers came to town before the draft.

"I was just finishing an interview with another club and then I went out and got some Subway. I come back 10 minutes later and there were people in suits in my driveway," MacDonald said.

That normally means you're in strife in Morwell.

His old man going out for a few beers at 16....Ahhh nothing like a pub with a solid RSA policy. Mind you in Morwell getting tats and starting to drink at 16 is probably considered being a "late starter".  ;D

Mac attack

There is a real X-factor about Richmond’s fourth pick (No. 51 overall) in the 2010 National Draft, Dean Macdonald . . .

That’s the learned opinion of Peter Francis, regional manager at Macdonald’s TAC Cup club Gippsland Power.

Francis, who played 158 games of league football with four clubs (Carlton, Fitzroy, Richmond and Essendon), and was a key member of Carlton’s 1979 premiership side, believes Macdonald has the potential to develop into an exciting forward at the elite level.

“Dean is very quick . . . he’s got those dancing feet.  He’s also got good hands, and is a beautiful kick for goal,” Francis said.

“He had quite an impact with us this year, kicking 43 goals in the TAC Cup from a half-forward flank.

“His work rate is quite good and he’s got a good attitude.  He’s just a really nice kid . . .

“And, there is a lot of development still left in him.  You know, he’s really only had the one pre-season with us.  The previous year, when he was at Morwell, he played two games in their seniors, and he kicked five goals twice at centre half-forward.

“So, he’s really got an enormous amount of upside . . .”
