Thoughts?
Can someone explain to me the benefit of these "set top boxes".
Wouldnt they be better off buying a LCD/Plasma for the same price? Not to mention the fact how that some of the new LCD's/plasmas opposed to the old analogues, are very environmently friendly
IMO this is a complete waste of money as anyone can change an address of their Grandma and say she needs a set top box where in fact they are the ones who are living in the house.
How will they police it?

Would assume that they will police via pensioners info held by Centrelink (or whatever they call the Dept of Social Security these days ;D)
As for the actually scheme, I have no problem with it...
I know an elderly person who barely survives on a pension so cannot afford to by a new digi TV or a set top box so it helps them out.. ;D
I have no problem with govts (no matter which political party) that helps pensioners ...

I think your missing the point, the elderly can be helped in other ways.
Thats one example you have given me but there are so many people out there who will use this to upgrade their own TV. Its wrong.
Same people that use disabled stickers on their vehicles from their nanna who doesnt drive.
This is not right. I wouldve preferred a rebate back to them to spend how they wish.
You will find that there will be all over the country getting set top boxes with no elderly person in sight

Ballarat TV technician Frank Schaefer said he had received more than 20 calls from pensioners for boxes that were either not working or had been installed incorrectly.
He claimed pensioners had been left with no contact details for assistance.
"This is daylight robbery," he said of the $400 of taxpayer money it costs for a digital box.
"It is extremely over-priced and the Queensland based contractors didn't seem to know what they were doing.
"At least half a dozen were faulty and many were not connected properly."
Ballarat pensioner Reg McLaren, 72, was one recipient of the government scheme who last week found his box did not work and paid $100 to Mr Schaefer for a new box. He said five of his friends had experienced the same problem.
"A bloke just turned up a few months ago, said he was from the government and every pensioner got one free," Mr McLaren told the Herald Sun.
"I switched it on last Friday and it didn't work.
"I find it astonishing they would waste that sort of money."

Program is already getting complaints in Vic. So what does Swan do? he takes the program nationally. Most pensioners would rather a one off payment off 400 dollars to be able to buy food or things they actually need or want.

The same guy last week was blaming poor digital reception in the Ballarat area for the cut outs.

The Government is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Do nothing and the media will be all over them about leaving poor old-age pensioners without tv.

Same people that use disabled stickers on their vehicles from their nanna who doesnt drive.
In some cases daniel, Nanna may not drive but still has a disable sticker for the people who drive her around.
Ma Powell didn't drive but we had a disable parking permit for when we took her out. She couldn't walk long distances and at times we had to carry her walking frame or a wheel chair in the car, so we needed that sticker. We never used it any other time.
I will confess though to getting mighty pee'd off when people use it when they shouldn't.
And regarding rebating the value of the set top box back to pensioners and letting them do with it what they want with the $$$. Sadly some would just make their way to the nearest pokie venue and blow it so perhaps they are trying to avoid that...who knows

Ok i have not heard anything from the budget, but i from this thread I am assuming that there is some sort of govt handout for set top boxes for pensioners?
$400?
What planet are these people from? you can get a set digital set top box for under $100.
More govt waste if i have assumed correctly.

yep 400 dollars is a total rip off. I dont even think they will be evening receiving HD digital top boxers just standard ones and there only about 40 dollars. So that makes us the tax payer pay 370 dollars just for someone to plug into the tv and power point. Its going to be pink batt scandal all over again. But over priced contracts for these projects is what labor have always done and do best. They treat tax payers like a never ending money tree.

I couldnt care less if this idea came from labour or Liberal, they both make me sick, facts are this is an absolute waste of money.
I bought a 32 inch Samsung for 400 bux from JB HIFI and its very efficient in power. Some of these old analogue TV's are a joke. Use so much more power so in the end will cost the pensioners more. On one hand we want to reduce emissions and the other we are allowing the use of these old analogue TV's instead of maybe giving them one for half the price or a cheaper set top box as Al suggested.
Cheaper medicine, cheaper electricity, more pension, anything wouldve been better than these stupid set top boxes. LMFAO.
Who are these installers and how can we be certain they are fully qualified and know what they are doing.
i just think money could've been spent elsewhere for pensioners.

Dont worry daniel they will be fully qualified. They have to do a online course before they can go out and install them :banghead :banghead

I did laugh at all the comments on the Herald-Sun this morning from people earning $150k p.a. crying poor because there's cuts to handouts they should never have been given in the first place. Sheesh if you have large credit card debts on that kind of money then you have no idea how to manage money :nopity. Welfare should only be for those who desperately need it to survive; not to subsidise 650k mortgages, credit card debts, etc ... for idiots who want it all even though they can't afford it and then expect the government and taxpayers to pay for it ::).

I had a laugh too MT, the $650k mortgage :gobdrop, "huge" credit card debt and then they say times are tough...
What I also found strange and somewhat disappointing was the lady whose family had the $130k income who said she wasn't going to work to increase their income because it would mean they would lose everything they are entitled to :o :o
"Entitled to" :o perhaps that is in part what's wrong with us these days, we think life (read the govt) "owes" us something maybe there are far too many handouts being handed out
-
It really is obscene these whingers
That money could go to other programs of people who are "genuinely" needy!
-
Unpopular to trim middle class welfare. At last a government has the guts to do it.
-

A television set for an old-age pensioner, or a person with a disability who lives on their own is like their best friend. That's all they have to keep them in touch with the outside world.
When the digital era comes in, most won't be savvy enough to realise they won't have coverage
The money incorporates the box, the installation, home assistance (training etc), so it's not just the cost of a set-top box.
Money well spent in keeping these people in the loop. Obviously, if they don't need one, they won't get it I'm assuming.

labor is finished, set top boxes will be the next big scandal. they should have just given $400 vouchers for pensioners to put towards buying a new digital ready tv.

Now i think you both. being WP and MT, have got it all wrong. Spoilt whingers MT. I think thats a big harsh.
We are the one of the most heavily taxed countries in the world and you know what we deserve every break we get.
There is a tax for everything and i mean everything, state and federal, disguised in what they term "charges". Its a joke so weather your middle, lower or higher everyone deserves a break.
Labour should just hang up their boots now, they are a disgrace. Set top boxes for analogue Tv's which are more expensive to run than a 32 inch LCD T.V, yet they crap on about their pathetic new carbon tax. What the hell are they thinking wasting $400.
You guys are blinded by your Labour loyalty much like my Dad.
-
This isn't a Labor/Liberal issue for mine and no I'm not being harsh daniel. I could argue the Government didn't go nowhere hard enough with cutting middle class welfare. I would abolish ALL middle class welfare which is why I wouldn't make a politician. We have inadequate and old infrastructure which the public also complains about (Melbourne's last mainline suburban railway line was built in 1930 for example) yet we have taxpayer funded handouts to people on $150k+ ::). Seriously it's a joke! The only reason they got all these handouts in the first place and that's what they are handouts - family tax offets, baby bonuses, private health insurance rebates, no-kids spouse rebate etc... is because they were vote buying gimics as the mortgage belts are where most of the marginal seats are. Sorry but welfare for people on $150k who have over-extended themselves with a 650k mortgage and huge credit card debts is a rort. Welfare is not meant to be a subsidy for greedy stupidity. As usual as soon as a Government gives out undeserved handouts people suddenly think they are entitled to them and then when they are removed all the sooks come out.
ps. if you want to argue we are over-governed and paying for too many pollies then that's a separate issue and I would agree with you daniel.

Im sorry MT but you cant expect me to believe that there is no Labour loyalty involved in your opinion. So if it was Abbott you would agree would you?
I dont have an issue with cutting middle class in some areas i.e Family tax A & B, what i have an issue is that this country is so over governed its pathetic.
State laws, council laws, federal laws. etc etc we pay our taxes, or sorry charges as they like to put it so we get confused, so IMO people deserve some tax breaks and yes baby bonus.
Take baby Bonus as an example the cost now to have a child is over 5k and in some cases more as some pediatricians can charge what they like. So you tell me middle class should just suck it up and deal with it while someone on $149k gets the bonus. Rubbish!!
Maybe some people are upset cause they have over capatilised on their mortgaged and brought the undue financial stress on themselves, that i agree with, but to take the bonus away because someone earns 150k is a joke.
Before they want to start reducing breaks for all classes maybe they should look at their own waste i.e set top boxes.
Lets be serious here, no one in their right mind can honestly say that spending $400 vrs a new LCd was the brightest idea they have ever come up with.
-
Now i think you both. being WP and MT, have got it all wrong. Spoilt whingers MT. I think thats a big harsh.
daniel, it has nothing to do with loyalty to a political party it has to do ith what "welfare" payments were originally established for -v- what they are now.
This attitude that people have about being "entitled to" something is the issue for me.
I have never, ever agreed with handouts for the sake of handouts. Welfare should be for those who need it not given out as some sort of encouragement award which is what appears to happen now. Every govt is guilty of it and will continue to be guilty of it because as I have said it all about buying votes
Any family on $150k+ with a $650k motgage, massive self inflicted credit card debt should not be receiving handouts from the govt. End of story
I've seen people decide to have have a child simply because they wanted the baby bonus not because they wanted or could afford to have a child but simply because they thought it was their right to get that money. Sorry but I don't see that as being right especially for the child.
BTW best thing the Howard govt did was introduce the requirement of a persons employee benefits (the stuff company's pay FBT on) having to be included on a person payment summary (group cetrificate) as a way of means testing people who may have only been earning $100k but were receiving over $50-$100k in benefits and not paying tax. I didn't hear the outcry back then that I hearing today - newsflash it is exactly the same thing
We (my "family" and we don't have kids but we are still a family) pay taxes (alot of them I night add) and I have to say I am sick ot death of paying taxes to pay for handouts to people who don't need them and shouldn't be getting them because they cannot manage their own finances.
I was bought up to believe that if you cannot afford something; anything then you go without it. Harsh? I don't think so I call it reality.
-

:clapping
Previous generations had to simply do without if they couldn't afford it. Life is about making choices and you especially have choice when you are earning $150k p.a. What makes these poor deluded diddums these days think they are so special they should get handouts no matter how much they stupidly over-extend themselves financially. All because they want a McMansion with a 650k mortgage to keep up with the Joneses :nopity. Btw daniel if Abbott had the guts to cut or even better abolish middle class welfare (he doesn't though as he supports this crap) then I would congratulate him.
-
Can I play devils advocate and put out there, for a family starting out, perhaps earning 150k or thereabouts, would a home loan of 350-400k (for say an average outer suburban house or small middle suburban unit worth 450-500k), what would the loan repayments be? Maybe 2,500-3000 per month?
Id suspect it's a decent hit of any family income, and close to the proverbial 30% of income/mortgage stress factor.
Fact is, it's likely a family earning 80k who bought a house 10 years ago and gets a crap load of tax cuts don't need it as much as a family starting out. You kill that demographic...work it out for yourselves.
-
with income of 150K you would be paying $54,538.68 per year on your mortgage. That leaves close to 100k before tax to live off.
If you cant do that you need rootin'.
you could further reduce payments to $48,750 per year by going interest only, if you were really struggling on just under 100k income to survive off
-
Its a standard after tax example , so at an average of 30% tax it's equivalent to 105k net income.
So that's typically mortgage stress for anyone starting out on an income that much, on a typical loan for a typical house.
Would you rather be in their shoes or your own?
And if we don't subsidies this demographic, what do you think might keep happening to your own standard of living? Wonder why it's already heading in the wrong direction?
-
1k a week is easily livable off ...if you are prepared to forgo a few luxuries.
Id take a 650k mortgage and 150k income. (assuming a property value of at least $812500)
Unless they have borrowed against it for poo, they will have more equity in their home than that.
They have a roof over their head and earn enough so that them and their kids can be clothed and fed.
These are not the people welfare is intended for.
-
You could say that about anyone with a roof and clothes.
The middle class has always financed this country. It subsidizes the lower class, and finances the fat cats.
Enjoy the next 5-10 years, and society polarizes, roads crumble, and people wonder, where has all the money gone!
-
interesting comment about the middle class.
Do you really believe that if these people do not get handouts the economy will deteriorate for 5- 10 years? ( that is what you mean?)
the best way the govt can subsidise middle class is to build infrastructure - roads, hospitals, schools , that creates jobs and ensures there is money moving about.
-
The government can't afford infrastructure, only population growth of the middle class.
It's locked into a cycle it can't get out of.
Melbourne alike most eastern seaboard cities is a city that needs to grow quickly to maintain the standard if living for all. Population growth and the construction industry has the highest flow on effect of income of any industy. No brainer.
No people who can afford housing ownership, they'll move elsewhere. Less in most job sectors, less in retail, less money to tax, less in your super...need I go on?!
Not that I like it, but that's the way it is.
-

your point is flawed. Just because you dont have kids put yourself in someone else's shoes who may have say 3 or 4, and on one income of 150k.
I bet you didn't hand back the $900 stimulus the government handed you? Of course not well you should because as you say you dont need handouts well last time i checked that was a pretty big handout to a lot of people that didnt need it.
Income of 150k net 100k and a 350k Loan and with the added cost of living(school fees etc) yet you think that family doesnt deserve a baby bonus. Give me a spell thats ridiculous but its okay to spend $400 for old people who most would be happier with a LCD tv.
I cant believe what im reading. The government should've given the pensioners a choice. Set top box($100) or JB voucher not this $400 blatant disregard for our money.
The only argument you seem to constantly bring up is these people with the big 650k mortgages who are now crying poor.
Again you are putting everyone in that small basket. I know a bloke who is about 40 ish who is on a descent wicket and is struggling badly living in Mernda or somewhere close to there.
He has 3 kids and his wife cannot work due to health but no according to some doesnt deserve a free kick here or there
-
For the record, IMHO 150k per household isn't a huge wage.
But it is enough to skim off $45,000 per household to subsidize the great unwashed.
Im talking about the knuckle dragging, overweight, today tonight watching simpletons, breeders, and over opinionated under-educated morons who don't have the presence of mind to better themselves.
Early early man, shaved down, overfed and put into an Ed hardy t-shirt.

Arggh the $900 stimulus handout = the first time I have ever received anything from the govt - fact. And what did we do with it, we got some work done at our house that cost a bit more than $900, so $900 I got end up going out the door giving a tradie some work, exactly what the stimulus package was for I would have thought - keepng the economy moving

You are correct I don't think they deserve a baby bonus, to be honest I don't agree with the baby bonus for anyone - it should never have been introduced. As I said if you cannot afford something then you don't get it
Your argument is flawed as well. A family with 2-3 kids on $150k with another on the way; simply if they cannot afford to have a 3rd kid they shouldn't be having one. End of story. A baby bonus shouldn't be the incentive to pop another kid out that you cannot afford to look after.
The only argument you seem to constantly bring up is these people with the big 650k mortgages who are now crying poor.
That's because they are and they are bleating that these handouts are their right.
Welfare is for people who need it.
Pensioners are the prime example. They are supposed to manage on less than $450 a week which by my reckoning is a lot less than $150k a year? Why don't they get more? They certainly deserve it
But unfortunately they miss out becuase we have to fund all these other benefits that people earning a resonable wage bleat they are "entitled to"
Again you are putting everyone in that small basket. I know a bloke who is about 40 ish who is on a descent wicket and is struggling badly living in Mernda or somewhere close to there.
He has 3 kids and his wife cannot work due to health but no according to some doesnt deserve a free kick here or there
On the contrary daniel and depending on what you class a "decent wicket" then he may deserve something especially if his wife can't work.
But it all comes back to what's a decent wicket? $50k, $80k $120k or $150k?
-
And can I ask a question?
Regarding the baby bonus and all these other handouts - now that the govt has decided to basically "means test" peoples eligibility to get them what do people think is the right number?
The govt has set the bar at $150k should it be higher or lower or should it not be capped at all, that is doesn't matter what you earn all families get all the handouts (eg baby bonus, family allowances)?
Just curious ;D
-

I dont have an issue with means testing of Family tax allowances, more than happy to pay my dues. My issue is with the baby bonus.
We pay Dr singh 6k and deserve to get something back and that i dont believe should be means tested at all.
Why are they persisting with things like the Goverment Co-Con? Its ridiculous that you can have 1 partner on 1 mil a year salary and the wife earning 30k and still receive $1000 a year from the Government. That is what i call a joke.
By the way i never had a problem with the $900 what i have an issue with is people saying stop the handouts etc etc (Liberal Voters) yet gladly took the $900 and whiped their ar-se with it, then cried like babies and bagged the Labour party for giving it to them.
Now your saying you deserved it etc etc. Weather you like it or not WP that was a handout you gladly accepted just like the tax benefits/Family Tax a/Baby Bonus/Paid parental/1st home owners that people are collecting each and every day.
The set top boxes will be an absolute dibacle make no mistake. I can see it already Mr habib or Mr jayasinga installing my nonna's set top box with no qualifications whatsoever.
-

Just to correct you daniel I never said I deserved the $900 handout, never.
Did I take it? Yes and we put straight back in the economy, not a pokie machine, not my bank account back but in the economy.. a tradie got a job that started out small and got bigger thanks to that $900
And all those handouts you've listed that I have never ever collected; never.
The only thing we get is the rebate on private health insurance but we had private health way before that rebate came in
All those things you've listed I'd get rid of them all and start again. Why? because there's to many people roting this system = not everyone is like you daniel
First order of business would be to increase the age pension, veterans pensions and then see what's left.
I'd them look at re-introducing certain things from scratch with a very strict eligibility criteria thereby making it tougher for people to rort the system with the aim of making sure that the "welfare" goes to those who need it rather than those who don't but think it's their right to get it

I dont often agree with you Dubs by you are 100% correct on this :thumbsup
