Title: Tigers vs Demons game thread
Post by: one-eyed on August 16, 2011, 01:56:26 PM
The AFL site is tipping Melbourne to win by 13 points...

SUMMARY
The final game of the round also looms as an intriguing contest.

Although neither Melbourne nor Richmond will feature in finals action, both will be keen to finish off the year on a high and carry that confidence into their preparations for season 2012.

Melbourne's horror month has been well documented but despite losing to West Coast on Sunday, the Demons showed great endeavour and were only let down by their poor skill execution.

The Tigers will head into Sunday's twilight clash full of confidence after they broke a six-game losing streak with a 43-point win over the Sydney Swans.

Trent Cotchin, Bachar Houli and Brett Deledio were all in fine form and will need to fire again this week.

The midfield battle between these two young sides will be an intriguing contest but if Melbourne are to win, they will need a lift from some of their more senior players in Brent Moloney, Brad Green and Colin Sylvia.

QUESTION MARKS
Can Todd Viney notch up his first win as caretaker coach? Melbourne defender James Frawley says Viney has had a positive influence on the players and they are keen to repay him with wins in the final three rounds.

Can Jack Reiwoldt keep his Coleman medal hopes alive? The Richmond forward has 56 goals to his name this season and currently sits second behind Hawthorn star Lance Franklin (62) on the leaderboard. Franklin kicked eight goals last week putting some distance between the two, and Riewoldt will need to reply this week if he wants to walk away with back-to-back Coleman medals.

PREDICTION
Melbourne by 13 points

Ditto.
Weather will be fine on the weekend so I am sure we'll outnumber them in the crowd as they will be sipping the Cabernet at the Mt Hotham Ski Chalet.
If Jako commits a stupid act he will regret let him king hit that princess Jacqueline Watts. Can't stand that goody two shoes.
Wonder if Captain Courageous Brad Green will play? :help
Want to see Riewoldt and the boys give them a beating especially b/c Frawley assumed that they have easier games now and expect to win and keep their finals flame flickering.  :ROTFL
Would love to extinguish this nothing club for 2011. :thumbsup

Hello Tiger supporters, have just joined your forum.
Supported the Tige's since 1970 (yes i am a bit of an old bastard)
I am heading over to Melbourne from Perth this weekend, to watch the mighty Tigers demolish Melbourne.
Can anyone tell me where most of the Richmond fans sit at the MCG? There is nothing quite like a sea of Gold and Black!!

This looks like a good forum, thanks for having me, its great to see so many brothers and sisters in one place.

Welcome Wellsy

As CUB said head to the Ponsford Stand (Gate 1) Level 1 (ground level) as that's the area that the Club has orgnanised for members to sit this weekend as part of the replacement game.

I believe most of Level 1 is general admission seating anyway  ;D and beside at the MCG the attendants aren't that big on looking at people's tickets to see where they are supposed to be sitting - so should be able to rock up and sit anywhere you darn well please  :thumbsup

Hopefully the Dees come in with the mindset of 'finally, an easy game to win for Viney'.

Then we come out and smash the soft pricks to pieces.

Agree with Jack 100%.  Failure breeds contempt for each other and doubt in your own abilities.  Melbourne can keep that.  Port is a demonstrating what happens right now.  Our club has been there before.  No more.

He has been on fire today, really is looking in good nic too, fitness wise.  In the past two weeks he looks like a rejuvenated man and is playing like a younger bloke.  Am liking Mortons efforts today too.  Is really getting in there and when he gets the ball he is usually rock solid.  Been some big hits too.  Dea has copped a couple.  Foley is coming into some form.

JT, where u been hiding you bastard, you left me talking to myself for most of the game.  Grigg does lack some pace, I won't criticise his endeavour.  I reckon he needs to shed a few.  That little prick Davey better have a holiday after his dirty little elbow on Morts.  Should of been a 50metre penalty we didn't even get a free kick.  Sylvia was in the book too for something but I forget what it was.

LOL Dookie, actually he seems like an alright bloke, he was on before the game, thought he was pretty balanced young individual with a good sense of humour, despite being in that horrible team.

wtf was the umpy doing when he let Davey elbow Morton in the head and then calls play on .... honestly is he serious?  It was hardly a secret, it stood out like dogs ackets!

It should have been obvious when morton was laying on the ground semi conscious but the effing tool then allowed a Melbourne scum to jump of top of morton and drive his knee into a semi conscious mans chest .

disease ridden pepe le pew.

3 decent quarters of footy and one lazy pathetic one which almost cost us the game. Dimma gave them an absolute spray at 3/4 time and deservedly so. Basically our classy top half-dozen or so got us home after half-time. We really struggled with Melbourne's pace and spread especially in the second half. They were playing us on the rebound and our midfield didn't push as hard back as they did forward which exposed our open backline if we didn't hold it in our forward 1/3 and enabled the Dees run it down and get easy shots on goal and kick something like 14.2 at one stage. I haven't checked the stats but for mine our midfield had the better at winning the footy (except for the 3rd qtr) but defensively we still don't work hard enough as a team. Also we really lack quality elite smalls/crumbers up forward. Being front and square to the fall of the ball seemed a foreign concept especially after half-time.

Yeah the third quarter effort was poor, we turned off the pressure bigtime.  A good win nonetheless and another step forwards in the learning curve.  We would of dropped that game last year when they turned it around on us.  They didn't let them psych us out and learned to win tight.

Except they lost.  Jones is a good player, hard to stop.  I think he was given a lot more attention this game than last time and was not as effective.

agree with all of that. Also noticed melbourne get front and square all over the ground, we got smashed on the rebound when countless times our defenders would spoil the ball at chb or the wing or the centre and there'd be melbourne players front and square every time. Its part of their game plan as they spread from defence with runners sprinting to get to the fall of the ball of the hitup forward just in case he doesnt mark it. Simple stupid football and its embarrassing we let them get away with it all game.

If I was dimma I would be ropeable that after total domination we only beat them by a kick - shouldve been 10 goals if we put more scorebaord pressure on them when we were supposed to.

Foley was bloody good today. Best game back.

Really liked the way Lids stood up when the game needed to be won. For some reason I was more impressed with Cotchin today than in any of his many better classier performances. He willed himself at the contest and threw himself at the ball with a ferocity Ive never seen from him - noticed this especially in the 3rd quarter when they were murdering us out of the centre square.

I liked our fwd press for large parts of the game, best structures Ive seen from us but still needs tweaking, once it gets broken down we give away the simplest of goals - counted about 6-7 goals through the back door. Some players were a split second too late in leaving their space for a man -  but you can accept these things bc today for the first time I can honestly say I saw a well structured fwd press.

edit: forgot to add I get so stuffing angry when out of form cheats like Jurrah get brought in for games against us bc everyopne knows we'll play your duds back into form.  :banghead :banghead :banghead

of course you would rather win than loss and i dont care about the picks as its too late for that, but i dont care as much about winning now that the year is done and dusted. Have seen it too many teams with this club.

We win the last few go into Summer suck us in for more money only to be bent over again by Carlton and whoever we play in the first 5 rounds and around we go again.

His whining to the umps for free kicks was shocking. He was embarassing himself. It's as if he thinks his Brighton Grammar silver spoon must translate into the footy field.
Will not be upset if someone knocks him out on the field from any club. Effing princess.
How insirational was the worst skipper in the league when he came on. Tugged his guernsey real hard when he kicked his goal in the third quarter. Made me want to jump the fence effing downhill skier.

x 3.  Gotta remember he is is still only young and learning.  Gets plenty of the ball and with the development Nahas, King, Rance et al have shown under Hardwick then I would say he has plenty of potential to become a very good player.  Gets plenty of the ball and that is the most important first step.

And getting back to the game. Thought we did real well in the first half. Thought Hardwick and co. had a good first half, pity they didnt continue it into the 2nd half. Grigg, Jackson and afew others need to go, Who decided that Grigg should be given a 3 year deal? Bad mistake!
Gee Grigg cops it! Fair dinkum, we are light years ahead in that trade!

Yetersday was proof that stats lie

Grigg lost me weeks ago but struth if people think refusing to chase, not running full tilt at the ball and not going in for the hard ball when it's your turn is OK (and that's been the story of his last 8 weeks BTW) then yeap we've done very well indeed

And BTW don't get me started on his non-effort next the behind post  :banghead :banghead

Problem with Griggs is that he hangs out to much for the easy kick and he is usually wrong sided for a left footer when he gets it.

By the way.His non effort next to the behind post was right in front of me.as bad as Farmers deliberate out of bounce where he had eyes for the boundary line .

I thought Farmer was stiff to be pinged for that. What else could he do? He was one out against 2 or 3 Demons, because our backs had been caught out of position. He'd done really well to deny them a gimmee goal where they should have just waltzed into an open goal. But as he got taken to ground he wasn't facing the goals, and so couldn't just concede a point. He was under extreme pressure, and all he did was just handball it away from the contest in the direction he was facing.

Cannot criticize him for that action, he had that bloke all over him like a fly on a nard and he had to punch it somewhere or take possession and get caught.  He played the percentages and it got the shaft, poo happens.

Agree Rolls but I reckon what stuff it fo him was the angle in which he pushed the ball towards the line. If he had gone for more metres rather than the shorter option he would have likely got away with it.

I thought he was really stiff because his effort up until that point in that contest was first rate

Loved the win, :cheers couldn't get to the game but watched it at the Sandy Pub. A few D's were there and their comments were interesting.
What a great effort by Nahas, his intensity is awesome, love the lad. Cotchins efforts were inspirational. I am eating my words and reckon that Edwards was pretty good as well. His second efforts were very good.
Grigg, :banghead did he have an appointment to be somewhere else? He looked very disinterested. His efforts were very average, disposal was poor, does he know what a shepherd is or what a second effort is? Personally instead of subbing Post off I think it should have been Grigg.

What about the elbow to the head of Morton??
Morton looks like he has another year to offer?

Conclusion. We have to thank Jordon McMahon  ;D for winning the game against Melbourne on the siren 2009, We would have had Scully and they would have had Martin. At last we have a genuine superstar (how many is that now??) and the players that had a real dip are starting to outweigh the players that are just running around.
Great work!! :clapping

what happened to our coaching panel in the 3rd? why the inability to clog up the game or stick afew men behind the play, melbourne were getting through the middle and once that was happening it was almost a certain goal.

Grigg was deplorable there I agree but Farmer to stay in the contest as long as he did and get pinged not by the officiating umpire there but the umpire from 50 metres away was just shocking. I thought Farmer did some nice things last night.

I must say I am not a fan of Farmer but he did do some good things. Possibly would be a better player in a better team but his endeavour is quite good. Has to work a little on his second efforts and delivery but gave him a pass last night.

thought Foley was very good last night. Got us out of a couple of tight situations. looked sharp and explosive
I'd be very wary trading him in his first season back from a long term injury. Unless we are offered something very juicy for him. Might just explode next year.
Also really liked Lids two crucial defensive tackles in the last.  :thumbsup

Agree, we seem to have a history of being quick to trade good players coming off injuries.

Lids is a champ.

I haven't checked the stats but for mine our midfield had the better at winning the footy (except for the 3rd qtr) but defensively we still don't work hard enough as a team.

Hit the nail on the head there, MT.  We didn't run back hard enough when the Dee's broke through the press.  Even if the defenders were able to hold up the run forward of the Dee's for a few moments, we didn't have our midfielders running back hard enought to offer assistance.  Too many times, I saw on the idiot box replays, our mids sort of running back, but they weren't sprinting like you see the Skunks' mids do.

the problem is that it took the skunks 3-4 years to build up a fitness base to be able to play that way.

They beat a poo club with a caretaker coach an an icon battling cancer that they couldnt beat earlier in the season -great! ::)

Let's promote it as a plus and a step in the right direction...pleeeeease!!!

Agreed Ox. Could not get excited at all. The Carlton loss has turned me into a psychological basket case for 2011. I hope to resume normal Tiger supporting in 2012.
