A lot of footy trips occur during trade period so it is a last opportunity to have a drink together as a team that played that season. And besides, how many people actually thought we would play finals? Our losses against port and suns hurt us but that can be balanced out by wins we were not expected to get such as freo, swans, bombers etc. so it is reasonable finish and a pass mark for the club.

I justify a pass mark on improvement and finishing on the ladder about where most pundits, insiders and supporters expected us to finish. We could bang on about who played crap, who got a game when they should not have and the like but we can't delist 20 in one hit and our injuries from the back half were horrific. We are now in front of Melbourne in terms of development and they began a season before us.
Title: Re: Mad Monday

I ask you a question.
Do you think the gap between say the bottom 12 sides and the top 5 has got greater?
I think it has.
Carlton, West Coast, Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn are miles ahead of the rest of the teams.
Keep in mind that West Coast finished bottom last year.
I would say that West Coast is a TICK !( Pass mark )
Out of all the clubs, they are they only club at the moment that get a tick.
Our losses to Carlton, Hawthorn,Gold Coast Port Adelaide and Essendon were extremely poor.

We should find some of the final bits to our team jigsaw puzzle soon though Jack.  Can't get em all in one year so it was always gonna be over a couple.

c'mon then jacko. taking into account where we were at the start of the season, what would they have to have done to get a pass mark from you?

what, in your opinion, would have been a realistic expectation for the season?

Disagree - would have to say the Bombers (and it pains me to say it) would get a pass make simply based on number of wins 2011 -v- 2010 and the fact they are playing finals

Judging a year can not be based solely on wins/losses IMHO

In my opinion, finish 8th, should never had lost the games against Gold Coast and Port.
Should never have lost on Sunday either., ( Thanks Daniel Jackson )
Therefore no tick !

You can only go out a beat the teams you are drawn to face Jack - easy draw, tough draw, thems the breaks

I get the feeeling even if we had made the finals you'd still say no tick because you's come up with easy draw, didn't beat enough top 8 sides... as I said you can only beat the teams you are drawn to face

As I had said, a tick for us was to finish 8.
also I believe we are a better side than the Bombers and North, although our performances dont suggest that, so no tick.
Amazing Essendon believed they were a Top 4 team half way through the year.
North thought and expected to play finals,

So are you saying that prior to the season you were expecting us to finish top 8 = play finals

Not after we won a few games but prior to the season starting you honestly believed were going to make finals?

that's what you are implying. which BTW is staggering because you are constantly telling us our list is crap  ;D

Yep, our list is crap.
We have no depth.
With any luck with injuries, I expected us to finish 8th...
As I said in another post somewhere, the top 5 clubs have cleared out from the other teams in the comp, we could of easily finished 8th which would of meant a tick.

Well guess what we didn't exactly have much luck with injury did we

And you've said we've got no depth

So you are saying that even with all the injuries to our back 6 and no depth we still should have made the 8

Don't think you can have it both ways Jack

Our season went south when Grimes in particular went down IMHO

If thats the case , we can tick 15 out of the past 30 years ::)
Dropping the games as i mentioned doesnt deserve a tick.
Cant believe we lost to Gold Coast and Port.

We should be striving to be the best.

The best sides in the competition are going to play footy for another few weeks.

We are not good enough to be doing that, however we are good enough to be training to work on deficiencies during that period. This could help us close the gap.

I would have the players training during the week as if they were playing finals footy and then watching the games together as a group to get a feeling for what they should be trying to be a part of. I would continue that every week of the finals.

Then on mad monday (after the grand final) they can go and get on the gas and then have a few weeks off before coming back for pre-season.

I dont think they should be in any mood to go out and run amok after the season they had. They should be upset and wanting to be a part of finals footy. Not patting each other on the arse.

Its time Richmond got ruthless.

The extra few weeks hard work wont hurt the playing group.

I would have had them in on Monday reviewing the Nought Melbourne game btw.

Damo, not sure but i think there is an EBA that states there must be a break of a certain amount of weeks between seasons. Hence why some teams, read finalists, start pre season a little later than others.
Also, how long do you think a young playing list would last physically and mentally if we trained them harder and for longer? They are a bunch of kids who do need to be human/social beings.
Every worker has a break, a holiday or whatever. Nearly every workplace has a social function where alcohol is consumed. It makes for less boring work place and is good for morale. Mad Monday is for only one day of the year after all!

But I guess thats trying a different approach.

Correct GR12 - 8 weeks break is what they must have under the CBA.

So if we were to train them now through to Grand Final wek then we wouldn't be allowed ot train them again until late Nov/ first week of Dec - not exactly ideal.

Mad Monday is BS.

Let them smash pee when the season is finished.

There is still a season taking place.

A season that they actually still could have been part of.

The funny part about your posts are that you basically say that they are a pack of teetotalers during the season. Yeah, no worries.

They dont relax and have a drink during the season the poor souls.

The list gets paid a fortune to be professional, how did they go on the trip to Darwin?

They have already had one "footy trip" this year. Now mad monday, and then "footy trip 2".

Question for you that reckon im being hard. When did they review the North game?

Or do we do another Hardwick favourite and just "bin it".

stuff that.

How about they as a bare minimum do the review and necessary recovery work then have mad stuffing thursday.

Mad Monday is a thing from a past era. Back when smashing pee on a thursday night was the norm and players were working class men during the week.

Agree with you on this Damo. This could be a massive statement to the rest of the comp. You could even just make it for the first week of the finals, start the players holiday 2nd week, then you get them back 8th Nov. At this point you will see who completed a finals program. They could use the 8 week holiday to their advantage and help sort some wheat from the chaff. Do you think Trent Cotchin sits on his butt during the 8 week layoff?

If the club does its player review as it has done in past years then the players will be called in one by one sometime this week over two days. So those who will be cut or may be put up for trade would know their fate before heading off on the offseason break.

Monday not quite so mad any more

    Confidential reporter
    From: Herald Sun
    September 07, 2011

GONE are the days of Brendan Fevola donning a nightie while gyrating with a sex toy, with Mad Monday labelled a "well behaved" event.

Well at least by Turf Club publican Matt McMahon, who had AFL clubs Melbourne, Richmond and North Melbourne roll in.

"The only reason we would have had to have called in security was to kick out Michael Ferrito for his bad moves on the dance floor," he said.

Fellow Roos Brent "Boomer" Harvey and Andrew Swallow were living it up with Demon Brent Malony and many Tigers until 1am.

Did the players set the itinarary for the Darwin trip? Did they run chook raffles to raise money for it? No, it was a club run event so if blame for unprofessionalism should be given then give it to the club!
About relaxing during the season, can you walk down the street without being hounded? Can you go to a bar and not be accosted by some drunk idiot who wants to belt you simply for a footballer? Can you get drunk without stories about the event appearing on the news?
Yes, so give them one day of the year to at least do the same!

C'mon GR12,

They are professional sportsmen. This means...

They forgo any right to privacy at all, even what they do in their own home.

They should be run into the ground, flogged, then run a little bit harder, constantly.

Any time they seem to enjoy themselves or have a joke/laugh they need to be publicly humiliated, and then run into the ground a bit more, as everyone that knows anything about managing people knows that happy people always give the worst performance.

It should be mandatory that after any loss each and every player should brood and sulk right through until the next game. This is how you improve performance, not remaining upbeat and learning from what went wrong

It doesnt matter how young or inexperienced they are, each and every player should be performing to a premiership standard for every game over the season. If they don't do this then they need to be sent to the naughty room and not allowed to let their their hair down after a long and arduous season.

Pfft whats wrong with these blokes? all they do all year is run a few laps, lift a few weights and then chase a ball around for a bit off a laugh each weekend. They really don't deserve to be able to unwind with their mates after doing this for 24 weeks.

Most secondary colleges now have AFL Programs which help teach students the requirements and disciplines required to play at ELITE level.
Can tell you there are parents who have payed thousands of $$$$ to have kids as young as 12-14 going through training camps etc to ensure they have every opportunity to be an AFL Player.

We have all heard the criticisms of Troy Taylor being selfish, lazy, undisciplined etc. Thats what happens when kids don't follow their dreams unfortunately.
And i would want big bucks too, the career path is not exactly long and fruitful for 95% of players.

What they should do too is get blokes who have been undisciplined get into a boxing ring and make him face a round with each and everyone of his team mates! It worked wonders at the Bears for Robert Walls!
Old fashioned (unofficial) military discipline, if someone hasn't pulled their weight or toed the line they used to do this OR punish everyone except you so they would give you a flogging later on.  Don't like it personally, it is manipulative and divisive.  They often got the wrong person too but no one would say anything.

True or not, this is the position they find themselves in.

Like it or not, its not the 1970s and 80s anymore. They are under the microscope these days and putting themselves in positions where "they cant remember" isnt real clever.

wouldnt be too hard to book a room somewhere and have some fun away from the public eye. ::)
To get that drunk where you cannot remember isnt good for a supposed elite sports person.

The woman contacted the paper first and hasn't even contacted police.

Just another after their 15 minutes of fame. She'll be on Big Brother or Australian Idol next.

They should still delist him.  ;D

Andy D and Adrian A need to lighten up.

Maybe Adrian A can dress up as a bucket and Andy D can dress up as a Mop and they can clean up the tear stains at the Lexus Centre.
