Title: 2014 Draw [merged]
Post by: one-eyed on October 16, 2013, 02:09:06 AM
Carlton and Richmond will be locked in to kick off Round 2 given the MCG is not available for a season opener.

AFL fixturing boss Simon Lethlean said Carlton and Richmond deserved to play the Round 2 clash again.

“We can’t lock ourselves in every year, but as long as it keeps being successful, it is a good chance to be there given the crowds in recent years.’’

Interesting.

The Junction Oval won't be ready for this cricket season I believe - have they actually started the works yet? Don't think they have

So until that facility I doubt Cricket will give up its access early

Dwayne Russell on 3AW just said Collingwood will open next season as the away team at Etihad. They initially said they heard North would be the home team but then later on Russell  said Geelong.

Confirmed that North will play Essendon on Friday 21st March (2nd week of the split round)

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/2014-fixture-any-news-or-leaks.1037733/page-4#post-30679460

So we've got for Round 1

Geelong?    vs Collingwood @ Etihad ......... [unconfirmed 3aw rumour]
North Melb. vs Essendon   @ Etihad ......... March 21 [confirmed]
GWS Giants vs Sydney     @ Skoda ......... Daily Telegraph

So we won't be playing these six teams nor Carlton in round 1.

Round 2 against Carlton will be our home game so presumably we'll be playing away in round 1. Hopefully not interstate  :-\.

If it's a Melbourne-based club you would think St Kilda. With the MCG being unavailable for round 1, we won't be playing any MCG co-tenants so that excludeds Melbourne and Hawthorn as well.

Blues and Tigers to play once
Date October 22, 2013

Caroline Wilson
Chief Football Writer for The Age

Traditional rivals Carlton and Richmond will play each other only once in the next home-and-away season with the AFL abandoning a return fixture despite the two teams' record-setting attendances in 2013.

The Tigers will host the Blues in the first AFL game at the MCG for 2014 in round-two but will abandon the customary gate-sharing deal as that clash will be the only one between the two sides unless they meet in the finals.

This is despite the fact that the three Carlton and Richmond games in 2013 averaged almost 80,000 a game with the September crowd of more than 94,000 a record for an elimination final.

Nor will the Tigers play Collingwood twice with only Essendon of the traditional blockbuster teams playing a return bout against Richmond. The AFL will unveil the 2014 fixture on October 31 having already revealed it will break a number of traditions by again opening the season one week earlier, starting with the weekend beginning Friday March 14 - grand prix weekend in Melbourne.

Round one will be spread over two weeks with the MCG not available due to cricket commitments until the third week of the season. The Richmond-Carlton game will be played on Thursday, March 27. Last year more than 80,000 saw the Tigers narrowly defeat the Blues.

The Blues are expected to play their season-opener against Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on March 16 - the day of the Melbourne Grand Prix - with the Tigers likely to travel to Metricon Stadium to play the Gold Coast.

The season has been brought forward to accommodate two byes following a strong push from the players and also to launch the season earlier in the northern states to combat the NRL's earlier start.

While the AFL puts the finishing touches to the fixture in consultation with the Seven Network and Fox Footy, it has briefed all 18 clubs over its determination to equalise the home-and-away competition by dividing the teams into groups of six.

The top six teams, for example, must play at least two other top-six teams twice and only one bottom-six team twice. Carlton's stunning finish to the season landed the Blues in the top six meaning it faces return bouts against Geelong and Port Adelaide.

The failure of Richmond and Collingwood to win a final saw those sides drop to seventh and eighth respectively to finish in the middle six along with Essendon. The AFL has chosen to schedule Carlton to play two games against the Magpies and the Bombers at the expense of Richmond. Of the top six teams, Richmond plays only Sydney twice.

If we aren't playing Carlton or Collingwood twice, I guess that leaves Port, Essendon* and n0rf as likely return games?

We're 'due' for Gold Coast twice but fixturing formula may suggest not. Those Cairns games were ours so if we're to play them round 1 it would be at Metricon. I don't mind this. Might be good to start the season away, fly under the radar and out of the news and without the build up.

Rest of the season:

Play twice:  Sydney, Essendon (4 games)

Play once: Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Fremantle, Geelong, Port Adelaide (6 games)

Unknown: Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, GWS, Melbourne, North Melb, St Kilda, West Coast, W.Bulldogs (9 teams in the remaining 12 games = play 3 twice & 6 once)

Guessing the 3 other clubs we play twice come from our block of "six" = Adelaide, Brisbane and North Melb.

I'm pleased we don't play Carlton or Collingwood twice. I know it's great for the coffers and atmosphere but both have been boggie sides for us in the recent past. I would prefer not to play North twice though for the same reasons. Their midfield just seems to match up well on ours.

Certainly wouldn't mid playing Brisbane twice and Adelaide would be a good contest when they get back all their players from injury.

Looks like a good draw coming our way hopefully  :cheers

From Caro's article in today's Age....

The AFL has scheduled at least three Thursday night games in 2014 with Geelong making its season debut at Simonds Stadium against Adelaide under lights on a Thursday night in round one. Richmond hosts Carlton in the MCG's first home-and-away fixture in round two and Fremantle is expected to host Carlton at Subiaco more than halfway through the season on a Thursday night.

The Blues have again emerged as prime-time darlings of the AFL, with six Friday night games, two Thursday nights and its now customary Monday night fixture at Etihad Stadium against St Kilda. The Blues' final home-and-away game is against Essendon in the round-23 floating fixture that could prove a seventh Friday night.

And the club that pioneered that timeslot, North Melbourne, has also jumped into prime time contention with five Friday night games in 2014 - two more than last season.

The Cats had pushed for eight home games at Geelong but were awarded only seven - paying a price for hosting a qualifying final at Simonds with Etihad Stadium receiving two extra games next season as a result of the deal it struck with the AFL. At least five of those seven will be played under lights - four at night and one in twilight.

Dont' have much choice if the AFL are hellbent in starting the season 2nd week of March

None of the grounds that have cricket on them (MCG, SCG, Gabba, Adel Oval) are available so they have to schedule low drawing games

I raised this months ago as well and was told I was wrong that the funding for Junction oval was approved even if there was going to be a change in govt. Seems the funding isn't available under the Abbott Govt & Cricket Vic has to re-apply.

This means that the MCG isn't available in the short to medium term until the end of March. Which in term means the MCG isn't available to open the AFL season

Could say "I told ya so" but wont

AFL have a bit of a problem  ;D

The AFL's plan to play footy at the MCG in March hits political roadblock
by: Mark Hayes
•From: Herald Sun
•October 25, 2013 12:00AM

THE AFL's plans for March footy at the MCG are in turmoil.

Funding for the proposed redevelopment of Junction Oval to build an alternative first-class cricket venue has hit a political roadblock, leaving Cricket Victoria no choice but to exercise its right to keep the MCG until the end of its program each year.

The AFL will release its 2014 fixture next week, with workaround plans that mean the 'G' won't host a match until the third weekend of football season.

While the MCG will host the Cricket World Cup final on March 29, 2015, it had been hoped the Junction Oval plan would free up the ground from 2016 so footy could start as early as the March long weekend in subsequent seasons.

Money was committed and the project approved by the former Rudd government.

But the change of government in September has put promised cash for all uncontracted projects on hold, meaning Cricket Victoria must reapply for the $10 million it thought assured.

The State Government has not confirmed its position, but remains in talks with all parties.

Remarkably, the impasse leaves Victoria as the only state without an alternative first-class cricket venue — or dedicated training facility — for the foreseeable future.

The $44 million redevelopment had taken in plans for medical and rehabilitation facilities, a 10-pitch indoor wicket training centre and improved oval seating, irrigation and drainage.

There were to be improved facilities for community cricket and the St Kilda Cricket Club, as well as an administrative headquarters for Cricket Victoria and a 30-bed accommodation block for country players and the National Centre for Diversity in cricket.

A revised plan costing less has been mooted, but it’s understood it wouldn’t bring the ground up to first-class standard and Cricket Victoria is reluctant to tip millions of its own dollars into a facility at which it cannot play official games.

It also means Melbourne doesn’t have a home for women’s cricket and will be unable to host tournaments such as the Ryobi Cup or lesser games in a Twenty20 World Cup.

Cricket has contractual rights to the MCG from October 1 to March 31 each year until 2019.

The AFL and Melbourne Cricket Club are thought to have offered up to a combined $4million for the project so the MCG can host earlier football matches and concerts.

The AFL has scrapped its pre-season NAB Cup grand final so it can start its season earlier and incorporate two mid-season byes into its fixture.

But the unavailability of its primary venue will cast its long-term plans into doubt.

Footy on Sunday nights set for Seven

Date:October 29, 2013
Caroline Wilson
Chief Football Writer for The Age

Sunday night television is set for a football revolution with the AFL to trial up to three prime-time games on Channel Seven for the first time in that timeslot in 2014.

The move means that next year's home-and-away season will feature 7.40pm games on five of the seven week nights from Thursday night through until Monday night with the Sunday night fixture seen by the league as a long-term prospect - preferable and more practical than Monday night.

While the finishing touches are being administered to the 2014 schedule, Fairfax Media understands Collingwood should be involved in at least one of the Sunday night Channel Seven games with West Coast tentatively scheduled to play North Melbourne at Subiaco on Sunday night (Melbourne time), June 1, as part of Western Australia's public holiday weekend.

Sunday night football has been regarded as an attractive proposition by the game's governing body given the relative dearth of quality free-to-air programming on a night once regarded as a weekly ratings high point.

AFL clubs were warned in a recent meeting of the 18 chief executives to expect some experimental fixturing in 2014 with the introduction of two byes, the early start to the season and the need to combat rival football codes. Round one sees Carlton host Port Adelaide on the Sunday night of the Melbourne Grand Prix weekend although that game is expected to be shown on Fox Footy.

Both the Seven Network and the AFL remained tight-lipped on Monday about Sunday night football but it is believed at least two and potentially three of Seven's 3.20pm Sunday games will be moved next season to 7.40pm. Neither Seven boss Lewis Martin nor AFL executive Simon Lethlean would comment on the new football timeslot, which will be unveiled on Thursday.

The AFL also looked at scheduling two Sunday twilight games at Geelong's Simonds Stadium but at the Cats' request reduced that to one - a round-16 clash between Geelong and the Western Bulldogs.

Seven had been unhappy in 2013 with the AFL's move to feature blockbuster games on Fox Footy - notably the Collingwood-Richmond clash at the MCG in round-four and the Collingwood-Essendon game in round-19.

The two AFL broadcasters were still waiting for final confirmation of the breakdown of games on Monday, although Seven was understood to have been more satisfied with its allocation.

The free-to-air AFL broadcaster was also looking to expand its Friday night football telecast, bringing forward its pre-game coverage from 7.30 to 7pm, a move that will further encroach on the Friday radio audience.

While the Blues have again been handed a generous prime-time fixture of at least six Friday night games, along with two Thursdays and one Monday night clash, another big prime-time winner next season is North Melbourne, which is expected to feature in five Friday night games - two more than 2013 and four more than 2012.

Carlton are with Nike
But N0rt isnt', N0rt with X-Blades

RFC was sponsored by Nike once and we sold less guernseys in those days than we do now with the KooGa/BLK range

That means we play at least one of the bottom six from this year twice. Presumably it'll be the Suns given we play them in round 1. It's not really playing a bottom side though given they are on the rise  :-\.

Top 6: Sydney twice; Haw, Freo, Geel, Port, Carl once

Middle 6: Essendon twice; Coll, Adel once; North, WC unknown.

Bottom 6: Bris, GC, WB, St K, Melb, GWS - play at least one of these twice.

So every club gets 2 byes, isn't it technically 3 byes because of the split 1st round?

From the AFL web-site:

AFL General Manager - Broadcasting, Scheduling and Major Projects Simon Lethlean said the first group of club byes were likely to be across rounds 8-10 (three weeks of six matches per round) with the second group of club byes to be placed in the run to the finals in the region of rounds 18-19 (one week of five matches and one week of four matches). All up, clubs would each play 22 games across 25 weeks through March 14-16 (week one of round one) to August 29-31.

Round 1:  (as it stands based on media reports)

Collingwood vs Fremantle (Etihad) - Fri. 14th
GWS Giants vs Sydney (Skoda) - Sat. 15th(?)
Gold Coast vs Richmond (Metricon) - Sat. 15th ........ At least we should be on FTA TV.
Carlton vs Port Adelaide (Etihad) - Sun. 16th

Geelong vs Adelaide (Simonds) - Thurs. 20th
North Melb. vs Essendon (Etihad) - Fri. 21st
Hawthorn vs Brisbane (Aurora) - Sat. 22nd
West Coast vs W.Bulldogs (Subiaco) - Sun. 23rd

That leaves Melbourne vs St Kilda (Etihad?).

So we have a 12 day break before facing the Blues at the 'G in round 2 on Thurs 27th.

Riewoldt's Sunday night warning

Nathan Schmook
afl.com.au
October 29, 2013 9:31 PM

RICHMOND forward Jack Riewoldt says players might not like waiting to play on Sunday nights - if the proposed new timeslot is introduced - but they will need to adapt.

The 2014 fixture will be unveiled in full on Thursday morning, but there has been speculation the AFL could introduce up to three Sunday night games as a trial next season, replacing the twilight fixture for those rounds.

With Thursday and Monday night games expected to remain next season, Riewoldt said players would need to come to terms with another new timeslot.

"From a player's point of view, it’s tough waiting around until Sunday midday to play your game of footy for that round," he said.

"I think waiting around until Sunday night, waiting until that 7pm timeslot, is going to be a tough one for the players.

"But I think we’ve seen in the past when the AFL decides to do something then they’ve gone and done it.

"The AFL is obviously delving into new frontiers as far as how they show the game and broadcast the game to fans."

Moving into the high-rating Sunday night timeslot makes commercial sense for the League, Riewoldt said, and it would likely help the next TV rights agreement.

However, the star goalkicker said the AFL would need to schedule high-rating games for the experimental fixtures.

"The biggest point is a lot of the games that are on these Sunday afternoons … haven’t been high rating games," he said.

"They haven’t been huge games that have been attended by the public.

"If they go down the Sunday-night path, they have to get the crowd in there, they have to get the atmosphere, otherwise we could really see it really petering off early in the season."

Jacky makes some good point here particularly about ensuring that high rating games are scheduled in the time slot. I would find it hard to attend a Sunday night game though as would most supporters so crowds would be down regardless.

RICHMOND
The Tigers have ended their three-year deal to play one 'home' game in Cairns, all but ensuring they will lift their presence at the MCG from 13 home-and-away games in 2013 to 14 next season. Having lost two of its three games against Gold Coast at Cazaly Stadium, Richmond will play the Suns at Metricon Stadium in round one before hosting Carlton in the MCG's first game of the season in round two. By losing to the Blues in the first elimination final, the Tigers fell to seventh and into the middle pool of six for fixturing purposes in 2014. There will be no return match against Carlton, but the Tigers are expected to play Essendon twice, with the 'Dreamtime at the G' blockbuster set to continue. Richmond played four of its last five games at the MCG in 2013 which is a run home the club would love to replicate. - Nathan Schmook

We play North Melbourne on a Sunday Night in Round 12.

AFL reveals 2014 fixture

    Jon Ralph
    From: Herald Sun
    October 30, 2013 10:00PM

AN ANZAC Day bonanza involving nine hours of football in two countries and three time zones will be unveiled by the AFL today.

The Herald Sun understands Fremantle has been awarded an Anzac Day clash which follows the traditional Collingwood-Essendon match and St Kilda’s New Zealand game.

It means fans will be able to enjoy an afternoon MCG blockbuster, the 5pm Wellington clash between the Saints and Brisbane, and then Patersons Stadium late show.

Anzac Day falls on a Friday, so the league has been able to accommodate Fremantle’s request for its Len Hall game against North Melbourne.

The AFL will today release its full fixture for a record 25-week home-and-away season culminating in a September 27 day Grand Final.

But while a raft of premiership contenders means many blockbuster games, the season will kick off with a whimper because of the unavailability of the MCG and Adelaide Oval.

The Round 1 schedule will be split over two weeks and is short of exciting clashes.

Collingwood will open the season against Fremantle on Friday March 14, with Geelong v Adelaide and North Melbourne-Essendon other rare highlights.

It is understood Hawthorn will take on Fremantle for the first of two clashes in Round 3, when the Hawks will unfurl their premiership flag for the second time.

They show off the flag to their Tasmanian fans when they kick off their premiership defence against Brisbane in a twilight clash on Saturday March 22.

It is understood the AFL’s push into Sunday night prime time could be greater than first thought, with North Melbourne also set to play a pair of Sunday night matches.

The Roos will face West Coast at Patersons Stadium in Round 11 at 5.40pm local time — meaning a 7.40pm start in Melbourne — and then take on Richmond at 7.40pm a week later.

Three Sunday night games have already been revealed — Essendon versus Carlton on April 6, Carlton-Collingwood on June 29, and Carlton’s Round 1 game against Port Adelaide on the day of the Melbourne Grand Prix.

North Melbourne’s disappointing 2013 season will have a silver lining in the shape of its 2014 fixture — made easier because North missed the finals this year.

While the Roos are again forced to travel twice for away games in Perth, they are set to enjoy a soft run into September with games against GWS, Adelaide in Hobart, the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.

North, which plays sides including Geelong, Adelaide and the Bulldogs twice, has been rewarded for its attractive play with as many as five Friday night matches.

The league is again expected to shun 2013 battlers on Friday nights, with Carlton and the Pies also on show repeatedly in that prime timeslot.

Very excited about that draw. Sydney the only team we play twice who have troubled us. Essendon will really depend on which team shows up on the day. We have a large number of games of games at the MCG and on free to air tv. Play GWS & Brissy twice and St Kilda twice  :thumbsup

Start the season off with a mixed bag of teams so once again this will make or break our season.  :cheers

Richmond

CLUBS YOU PLAY TWICE: Brisbane Lions, Greater Western Sydney, St Kilda, Sydney Swans and Essendon.

PROS: Play only one top-four team twice.

CONS: Lack of blockbusters, due to only playing Collingwood and Carlton once

HIGHLIGHTS: First Sunday night match against North Melbourne in round 12, and first trip to ANZ Stadium to play the Sydney Swans in round 23.

TOUGHEST RUN: Play North Melbourne, Fremantle and the Sydney Swans between rounds 12 and 14, although all the matches are in Melbourne.

TRAVEL: Six games outside Victoria, made up of two games in Sydney and one in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide

GAMES AGAINST 2013 TOP 6: Seven. Sydney Swans (twice), Hawthorn, Fremantle, Geelong, Carlton, Port Adelaide.

GAMES AGAINST 2013 BOTTOM 6: Eight. St Kilda (twice), Greater Western Sydney (twice), West Coast, Gold Coast, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne.

WHAT WE SAY: A very favourable draw, which increases the pressure on the Tigers to finish near the top of the ladder in 2014.

A draw which produces winners and losers

Charles Happell
Written on Thursday, 31 October 2013 09:12

...............................

In a new twist this year, the 18 clubs were divided into three pools - top, middle and bottom - based on their 2013 ladder position.

This had interesting consquences for Carlton and Richmond, in particular.

The Blues, you'll remember, were given a late call-up to the finals this season when Essendon was effectively booted out of the 2013 competition. They then squeaked past Richmond in their first final to become a top-six team. So they went from ninth to sixth in a matter of a week - thus qualifying for the tough 'top' pool in 2014.

By losing that first final, the Tigers meanwhile dropped back into the 'middle' pool and thus earned a significantly easier draw for next year. In fact, Tigers fans - while they might not have been feeling too chipper after losing that elimination final to the old enemy - will look at the 2014 fixture today and think: what a blessing in disguise.

Unless the Dees are drawn to play themselves twice , The Calder Cannons twice and GWS six times then they have a very tough draw.

There's little doubt, though, that Richmond has emerged in draw terms very well placed indeed. The Tigers, who did finish the home-and-away rounds fifth, play just one finalist from this year, the Swans, twice, and have return games against two of this year's bottom three.

Five of Richmond's six road trips are against teams that finished outside the eight, and its sole trip to Perth is against West Coast, which in 2013 managed to win just three of its dozen games at its Patersons Stadium home.

Full Draw Richmond

RD DATE OPPONENT VENUE HOME/AWAY LOCAL TIME HOST TV NETWORK

1 Saturday, March 15 Gold Coast SUNS Metricon Stadium Away 6.40pm Seven

2 Thursday, March 27 Carlton MCG Home 7.45pm Seven

3 Saturday, April 5 Western Bulldogs Etihad Stadium Away 1.45pm Seven

4 Friday, April 11 Collingwood MCG Home 7.50pm Seven

5 Thursday, April 17 Brisbane Lions The Gabba Away 7.50pm Seven

6 Sunday, April 27 Hawthorn MCG Home 3.20pm Seven

7 Sunday, May 4 Geelong Cats MCG Away 3.20pm Seven
As much as the media are saying we've been given a good draw, the first seven rounds are tough. A worst case scenario of 2-5 would be hard to come back from even with a good run home. We haven't beaten the Pies or Cats since Adam was a boy; the Blues have over-run us the last two times and it was almost three; while we struggle to play decent footy up there against the Suns.

1. Gold Coast Away  P ...... very nervous about this one.
2. Carlton MCG        P ...... Carlton will be named favourites
3. Bulldogs Etihad    W
4. Collingwood MCG  L ...... Pies will be named favourites. Hoodoo since 2006  :scream.
5. Brisbane     Away  W ...... playing interstate is never easy but our record against the Lions home and away is probably our best over the past 5 years.
6. Hawthorn MCG     P
7. Geelong MCG       L ...... 30 year hoodoo side  :scream
8. Bye
9. Melbourne MCG    W
10. GWS  Away       W
11. Essendon MCG    P ...... they won't have yet had their 2nd half of the season implode
12. North Melb. Etihad  L ..... and another hoodoo side  :banghead especially at Etihad.
13. Fremantle MCG    W ........ we usually play well against them at the 'G
14. Sydney MCG       W ........ see above. Struggle up there but a good recent record at the 'G.
15. St Kilda Etihad    W
16. Brisbane MCG     W
17. Port Adel. Etihad  P ...... If it was at the 'G I'd put a W but Etihad suits Port and it's not our home ground  :banghead
18. West Coast Away P ...... a surprisingly virtual gimme this year but who knows next year under a new coach. Historically a tough ask.
19. GWS        MCG    W
20. Essendon MCG     W ....... will be in their annual late season slide by round 20.
21. Adelaide  Away    P ....... like the Eagles at Subi - who knows with Walker back will it be the Crows of 2012 or still the dud 2013 model.
22. St Kilda  MCG      W
23. Sydney  Away     L ............ we always struggle up there although ANZ should suit us better than the toy-size SCG.

That's 11 wins, 7 plausibles and 4 losses. So finals will again depend on us winning the games we should plus splitting the 'plausible' ones. To make top 4 we'll need to break the last of the hoodoos and at least be on the positive ledger side after the tougher first seven rounds.

Winners and losers of the 2014 draw

WINNERS

Richmond

When you only have to play Collingwood and Carlton once, you know the AFL has handed you a good fixture. It gets better though. Richmond play Brisbane, St Kilda and GWS twice, while they also double up against contenders Essendon and Sydney. There's no trip to Cairns this year, and their only trip to Perth will be against the rebuilding West Coast Eagles. The Tigers won't travel at all for almost two months around May, June and July, and they really should be sitting pretty in the top eight for much of the year. Losing to the ninth-placed Blues was a huge disappointment this September, but it has done wonders to their chances in 2014.

Generally agree apart from Round 17 and 18 which should both be locks IMO.

13W 4L and 5 in the balance.

Rohan Connolly's rankings of each team's draw ...

Richmond appears to have fared particularly well for 2014. The Tigers finished the home and away rounds this year in fifth spot (seventh after the finals), yet next season meet only one of this year's finalists (Sydney) twice. Brisbane, which finished 12th, in contrast, has drawn three finalists - Fremantle, Geelong and Richmond - twice, along with a very capable non-finalist in North Melbourne.

Did you read all of the post?  ::)

It was right at the bottom

"That's 11 wins, 7 plausibles and 4 losses. So finals will again depend on us winning the games we should plus splitting the 'plausible' ones. To make top 4 we'll need to break the last of the hoodoos and at least be on the positive ledger side after the tougher first seven rounds."

P = plausible and/or possible, probable etc
