Patrick Dangerfield on Richmond’s radar after Tigers sign Trent Cotchin for five years
Jon Ralph
Herald-Sun
December 05, 2014
RICHMOND has thrown its hat in the ring for Adelaide star Patrick Dangerfield after locking away Trent Cotchin for life.
The Herald Sun on Thursday revealed Cotchin had signed a five-year deal with the captain determined to reduce any distractions surrounding his contract in 2015.
The Tigers are keen to move ahead on talks with fellow free agent Alex Rance, who has been linked with interest from Fremantle.
He is a West Australian but his parents have moved to Melbourne and he seems extremely unlikely to head back home.
Those talks are yet to gain any traction, with Rance’s stopping ability combined with his run from defence earning him All-Australian selection last season. The Tigers will have to come to the party to satisfy him.
Cotchin said he hoped giving away his free agency rights — he came out of contact at the end of next year — would be an example to the club’s younger players.
Dustin Martin is also keen to re-sign and seems likely to get a deal done over the summer.
But given Cotchin did not extract maximum dollars and the club has been stockpiling salary cap space, there is room to move.
The Herald Sun has reported Geelong is the Victorian frontrunner if Dangerfield leaves Adelaide, but Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale made it clear the Tigers shouldn’t be ruled out.
“He is a very good player, Patrick Dangerfield, and Dan Richardson who heads our football department says if some of those high quality players are available and would like to join our club and they are open to meeting our needs we would be very happy to have a chat to them,’’ he said.
Richmond saved money by aborting a trade for Melbourne’s Jack Trengove, had Daniel Jackson prematurely retire and has been prepaying contracts for some time to clear salary cap space for a star midfielder.
Gale said he was confident of securing Rance and believed Cotchin was all but locked away for life.
“It takes Trent out to 30 and I would like to think he would be a one-club player,’’ he told SEN.
Dangerfield has pointedly put off contract talks until 2015 with some Adelaide figures increasingly concerned about his future.
He is adamant he won’t be signing a new deal just to placate members — instead, he wants to play at a club where he can win premierships.
Cotchin wanted to avoid that continued speculation so moved quickly to sign his deal.
“It was really important for me not to make the contract negotiations drag out throughout the year and be a distraction to our playing group,” Cotchin said.
“Even further to that, our supporters. People can get on the edge of their seats with not knowing exactly what’s going to happen in the future.
“I just wanted to get it out of the way, with as little fanfare as possible, and getting back to doing exactly what I know needs to be done.”

Given the Cats want to play us at Kardinia Park we can host his folks once a year ;D
-
Wouldn't be on everyone's radar? Not getting my hopes up but good to see we're in the hunt :thumbsup wouldn't be far off a premiership if that happened.
-
Dustin Martin is also keen to re-sign and seems likely to get a deal done over the summer.
:clapping :clapping :clapping

Sign up Rance and Martin then go after Dangerfield if interested

If we get dangerfield at the end o 2015 he'll be 26 when he first plays for us. Just hope we don't offer massive overs for a guy who might only play a few seasons.
Would prefer a younger star if paying up huge
-
26 is fine.
Fits in well with the llist demographic IMO
4th favourite for brownlow
-
Getting another gun might be key. Look at the effect of Luke Ball on Colingwoods midfield in 2010. Can just be what pushes you over the line. But to get him wed have to top 4 this year you would think otherwise were not really in the hunt. Would love it if they got him.

Ok , firstly I'd prefer we just said nothing about this type of thing to the media and secondly I'm hoping that's just a bit of spin from Benny coz if that's really how we're going to approach it we'll never land a big fish ever.
GO AND GET THEM BENNY !! And tell nobody that you're doing it.

Turns 26 in April 2016. So you would sign him for when he is 26,27,28, 29 and 30. First 3 are prime output years. Pay him well for those and lower for last two.

Dustin will be at Hawthorn next year

That's a shame

A younger star would mean a trade, a high draft pick or one of our better players. Dangerfield is free.
The money is there. We offered it to Fyfe (we could have drafted him) knowing that we still had to re-sign Rance, Cotch and Martin.
-
More so danger is ranked 4th in line betting. Cotchin six.
So its a higher standard of player as opposed to said 22 year old
-
Would love Danger at Tigerland, is one of the best players in the league, no doubt!
But is this just a way of trying to get us pumped up to buy a membership?
The RFC are hard to trust ATM IMO.
-
lmao
if anyone is stupid enough to purchase a membership based on this then they deserved to be screwed over, if that is indeed the cunning plan.

Really, 26 wow, order the coffin.... :whistle
Would be the perfect age to come to the club and could still go onto play until he is 32..
-
Same age as cotchin
Bit older than vlastuin and miles
But younger than lids
Sound about right to me

Phil why do you love the Hawks so much? Cant understand it myself :-\

Ch 7 news tonight reckoned that Dangerfield being overlooked for the Crows' captaincy was a sign that he is coming back to Victoria at the end of this season.

Well he won't be coming to us...

Ch 7 news tonight reckoned that Dangerfield being overlooked for the Crows' captaincy was a sign that he is coming back to Victoria at the end of this season.
Thought the same when I heard it on the radio today.
It must be true. If you want to keep a star like Dangerfield you would offer him the captaincy. The fact the big boof head bogan got it tells me he is as good as gone. Hopefully to us.
If we get him to Punt Rd it will be our biggest recruit in 30 odd years. And a real chance to be a genuine contender.
-
Paddy is the one we've all been waiting for.
Salary cap space-check
Cash on hand-check
Inner city pub-check (buy the GB for him)
Real estate deal with Clinton Casey- check
-
Word is his fiancé is from Geelong. They have plenty of cap space now too......... >:(

To be very clear, the mandate is to find a team who us well placed to win a flag. Even if it means crossing the Torrens.
Yes really.
We'd almos need to play in the GF to have any chance.

Then let's work out a way to buy Werribee Park mansion for them and they can live in the middle!

wants to play in a premiership. geez that rules us out. we would want to at least make a preliminary final this to be any sort of chance. it wont happen we are just as much a chance to miss finals all together as 6 or 7 other sides and finish mid table.
-
Still brimming with confidence?
-
Do not want, cannot hit a target
-
Saying going to Geelong.
-
As long as we have red hot go at getting him...
Would compliment our midfield nicely as well as being another great option up forward playing a role similar to Dusty & Lids

No Sloan would be better

That's because he is.

ADELAIDE coach Phil Walsh says he will continue to play a straight bat to the feverish media speculation about star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield's future.
Dangerfield, 24, is one of the hottest properties in 2015's free agency pool, along with Geelong's Tom Hawkins and Richmond's Alex Rance.
Dangerfield has already been heavily linked with Geelong, having grown up in nearby Moggs Creek, but the Cats will have to fend off plenty of rival suitors if the midfielder decides to come home at the end of this season.
The speculation that Dangerfield is set to depart West Lakes has spiked in the wake of Wednesday's announcement that he had been overlooked for Adelaide's captaincy, with Walsh preferring key forward Taylor Walker.
When asked how he would handle the inevitable – and constant – questions he will get as long as Dangerfield remains out of contract, Walsh made it plain he would not be distracted by external hype.
"I don't answer it, (I will) just say, 'Look that will look after itself'," Walsh said.
"Basically, that's what will happen."
Dangerfield is one of six Crows on this year's free agency list, along with Richard Douglas, Andy Otten, Brent Reilly, Scott Thompson and Brodie Martin.
Star midfielder Rory Sloane is also out of contract and, like Dangerfield, was one of the highly fancied candidates beaten to the captaincy by Walker.

Maybe we need to have a "man talk" about getting him
-
Well the Griggs, Newmans and Hampsons of the world aren't going to pay for themselves....
They should.
-
would we be able to fit Dangerfield in our salary cap?
Martin, Rance need to be signed first.
Grigg, Hampson, Newman, (Dea, Elton or Batchelor) need to get off the list to make some room in the salary cap.

Haha so true.
I'm not a fan of FA personally. The rich get richer...
Don't want Danger either, he'd be close to the most expensive player in the game and comes with a massive amount of risk as a result.
If we engage in FA, I'd rather we go for Selwood/Steven types than someone who'll derail our pay structure.

mate i would have been happy with a hallahan type for the midfield,we went for greenwood so why not hallahan.imo the hawks will rue letting him go just like they rue letting kennedy go.
when i looked at our backline without rance last yr well we had to go after frawley surely.our whole season could go to the dogs if hes injured.
imo james gwilt allowed to play a running third tall role an absolute steal.at stkilda in recent yrs hes been ruined by injury and when fit been asked to virtually play kp. go look at this bloke play 2010 2011 before injury. has to be better than grimes, batchelor dea newman and houli and boy he creates real competition for a gig.
finally what sml fwd do we have that has performed anywhere near garletts level. he should have been a priority.
they all went cheap and i for one would have been happy to have all 4 though not likely to happen.
thats not to say i would not like a player like danger. imo the opportunity is there to have both the frawleys garletts etc and target elite players like danger as we go.as a f/a danger would come for free.

A fit Grimes in 2015 is better than an over the hill Gwilt by the length of the Flemington straight. Grimes will be a star if he can stay fit.
I agree 100% on Chip and Garlett though. Although if not getting Frawley means we can get Danger, well played Tigers!!!!!!

na we disagree big time on this one. the simple fact is grimes has done virtually sweet stuff all his entire career. if gwilt gets fit again we know he can play.
funny gwilt has suffered big time with injury as has grimes but it seems you allow some slack for grimes yet you wont allow that as an excuse for gwilt.
you talk up grimes potential but we all know it means nothing until the runs are on the board. the difference in performance between the washed up hack gwilt and the promising grimes is indeed the length of the flemington straight.
mate james gwilt was superb in 2010 and for 2/3 of 2012 when he did his knee. he has suffered issues since and has been asked to bulk up and play kpd which is not his role.
lastly if 28 is over the hill then theres plenty of players who should retire.
-
They're different players man. Grimes in med-tall 3rd KPD. Very fast.
Gwilt is a medium, good size.
I'd take them both personally.

Patrick Dangerfield will have to accept a pay packet less than his market value if he wants to play at Geelong next year.
Dangerfield, 24, is out of contract at season’s end and could command a million-dollar payday as he moves into the prime of his career.

I agree with Claw, to date Gwilt has been a far better player than Grimes who IMO has only had one good half year (2012?) but unfortunately did his hammy. Grimes has more promise but Gwilt has the runs on the board and as a cheap top up he would of been worth getting

But whatever earthquakes 2015 holds in store, no one will be even slightly surprised if Adelaide's prized free agent Patrick Dangerfield ends up at Geelong. The shock will be if he plays for another club, besides the Cats or Crows.

The cashed-up Tigers did not participate in last year’s trade period but are expected to make a serious play for a big-name free agent at the end of this season.
Adelaide free agent Patrick Dangerfield is the game’s biggest name to put off contract talks with his club, fuelling speculation he could be headed home to Victoria.

I think if we have a really good year and finish a solid top 4 then we are a real shot for Danger. If it were just money he could probably get it at the Crows.
-
it would be like having two Dusty's.
-
Get Danger. If this is what we have been holding out for then do it RFC, all the crap over the past few years about not being involved in FA or Trades to set us up for next year.
Well put your money where your mouth is, get Danger or get stuffed.. ;D
Not just about money WAT. We need a big 2015 to land both Rance and Danger

Yeah agree mate, the season is up to the players I suppose, if we succeed, have a great season, keep Rance, offload Newman and Foley we should be in the box seat for Danger. We really need to beat clubs like the Pies, Cats, Hawks and Crows for him to see the upside of coming to us. Throw beating Freo, Swans and Zport into that mix and we are a shoe in.... ;D

Which clubs are the Crows' main rivals?
Fortunately for the Crows, they appear to have only one genuine rival for Dangerfield's services – Geelong.
Although some Melbourne clubs could be prepared to offer Dangerfield up to $1.2 million a season, the Cats aren't about to blow Adelaide out of the water with a deal of Buddy-like proportions, especially when they are seeking to re-sign a star restricted free agent of their own, key forward Tom Hawkins.
Most club sources think the Cats will offer no more than $850,000 a season, but even if Geelong is prepared to offer Dangerfield $1 million a year, one list manager suspects Adelaide is well placed to match it.
AFL.com.au understands the Crows have plenty of room in their salary cap and will have even more if veteran midfielder Scott Thompson retires at the end of this season.
And if the Cats offer Dangerfield a long-term contract of five years or more, the Crows should have no hesitation matching it given Dangerfield is yet to turn 25.
Unfortunately for Adelaide, this is one free agency battle that won't be decided by money or contract length.
If Dangerfield decides to accept an offer from Geelong, it may simply be that the pull of being close to his family in Moggs Creek, 50km down the Great Ocean Road from Geelong, has been too hard to resist.

Geelong can easily amass a war-chest for Dangerfield, with its six veterans this year all having $118,380 of their pay packets exempt from the salary cap.
The Cats are also likely to have several high-profile retirees including Corey Enright, with nine Cats 30 or over.
It is understood Dangerfield is keen to see how Adelaide performs this year after missing the finals in 2014, with all Crows players also gauging the progress of new coach Phil Walsh.

why cant we match Geelong's offer of being closer to his family?
truly embarrassing how incompetent this club is.

I would expect the middle grouping at Richmond those outside of the best 22, would be in too much money such as ones Shaun Griggs, Troy Chaplins, Angus Hampson and the like. Where as GeelongFC probably have to good players on decent money and the kids on very little.
-
but it's not the money that Geelong are offering, it's the appeal of living closer to his family.
How hard is it for RFC to match this?
We truly are a rabble
-
He's going to Geelong. Who would want to drive from Moggs Creek to Richmond every other day? It's bloody far. Our best bet is he has a missers who pulls the strings and wants to live in Melbourne

We should move the club to Moggs Creek so that we can get Dangerfield
-
Geelong certainly seems the most logical destination for Danger. I guess our only chance would be if we have a little more money to offer him and he's happy to settle for living in Melbs, or commuting from Moggs to Punt Rd.
Playing for the cats and living around Geelong would be a pretty hectic bubble also. It may not be that appealing in some respects.
-
Maybe we should kidnap his mrs and put her in house detention in Richmond.
Seriously though he wants success and money. If we can't offer both we're not in the running. Geelong won't slip down if they keep nabbing blokes like Mitch Clark, R Stanley and Dangerfield etc during their off seasons.
The reason we go nowhere is that we're lucky to develop one good draftee per year. Our lack of quality trades and FA targets is hurting. The rejects are rejects for a reason. Miles aside...

We should. such a simple and obvious solution but this club simply wont make the hard calls.
I'm not going to tolerate it.
-
So is he going to move to Moggs and drive an hour to Geelong every day? Surely a Melbourne club could lure him and a 2 hour drive to visit his folks every week or two is still better than jumping on a plane.
-
actually plenty of people would be happy if they only had an hours drive to work
-
As someone who has about a 5min drive to work, this does not make any sense ;D

I wouldn't even put it in the hard call category, semi-hard call at most I reckon
-
THE city of Geelong is prepared to do whatever it takes to lure Adelaide star Patrick Dangerfield home next year.
