What thing came loose from its mooring and floated over London creating some mayhem when Pink Floyd were shooting the photo for the cover of their album "Animals" at Battersea power station?
Title: Re: Music quiz
Post by: Moi on February 02, 2006, 08:20:42 AM
An inflatable pig.  I cheated MT - but luv this excerpt from Wikipedia:

The giant, helium-filled pig seen on the cover was actually flown over Battersea Power Station for the photo shoot. On the first day of shooting, a marksman was on hand in case the pig broke free. On the second day of shooting however, photography commenced before the marksman had arrived. Ironically, a gust of wind broke the pig free of its moorings. Because there was no-one to shoot the pig down, it sailed away into the morning sky, with the photo crew watching in horror. A passenger plane reported the pig, causing all the flights at London Heathrow Airport to be delayed. Legend has it that the pilot was breathalysed upon landing. A police helicopter was sent up to track the pig, but was forced to return after following the pig to an altitude of 5,000 feet. A warning was sent out to pilots that a giant, flying pink pig was loose in the area. The CAA lost radar contact on the pig near Chatham in Kent, at a height of 18,000 feet and flying east towards Germany. It finally landed in a farmer's field (without any damage), where the farmer was angry because it scared the sheep. The resulting pictures were not deemed suitable, and the final image is a composite of the power station picture from day one and the pig from day two. While Roger Waters had never intended for a composite picture to be used, it was the cloud coverage over Battersea Power Station that ensured a superimposition would be necessary.

Similar inflatable pigs have since featured in Pink Floyd concerts.

'Joy Division' comes from the book 'House of Dolls' based on the life of the author's sister who was forced into a Nazi concentration camp brothel.

My tastes vary to be honest. Enjoy music from the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's & the early 2000's and even some of today's stuff but not much of today's stuff

Hate Punk, Rap, Hip Hop and what I call "processed" music

Some days I'll listen to Fleetwood Mac, then I swap over to Simon & Garfunkel, then it could be over to Cheap Trick, or Tonic, or Pat Benatar, or the Doobie Brothers etc.....

One CD I'm listening to a bit at the moment is "Gurrumul" by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - who played at the Dream Time at the "G this year. Sensational

Which two American bands of 'alternative genre' were the headline acts at the first Big Day Out  in 1992?
I know Nirvana played in the first BDO but I don't know if you would call them alternative as they were selling albums in Brash's stores at that time under "Rock". Violent Femmes also played and they were considered "alternative" at the time so maybe I've got 1 out of 2 MT??
Two out of two correct tiga  :clapping  :thumbsup

I guess Nirvana were considered alternative until Nevermind (released just a month or so before the BDO) made them mainstream popular.

Cool MT! After Nevermind was released, I wonder how many fans were determined to turn their young children into "Water Babies"  ;D

Well, it looks like no-one had a go at answering my quiz, so I might as well tell yaz.
The founding members of the New York Dolls were: David Johansen (voc.) Johnny Thunders (lead gtr.) Sylvain Sylvain (rhythm gtr.) Arthur "Killer" Kane (Bass) and Billy Murcia (drums).
Incidentally, WP and Tuckerbag, they were not Punk. They were a straight-ahead rock band whose sound was influenced by 50's rock like Eddie Cochran, traditional Blues like Sonny Boy Williamson and Bo Diddley, and elements of early '60's girl groups like the Shangri-La's.
The reason the Punks were in thrall to them was because of their swagger, and the fact that they favoured basic rock'n'roll to all those 15 minute guitar breaks, drum solos, and navel-gazing lyrics that Prog "artists" had inundated rock with by the '70's.
