Are we favorites ??
Hawthorns form has been very very good since the bye . Impressive wins . A honorable loss against the Cats . I kinda feel ripped off we are not playing the basket case from the opening couple of months .
Having said that - this game is massive for Richmond . Cant wait .
-
I hope we smack them out of the finals race.
-
Hawks are certainly dangerous. I reckon we can put their defence under extreme pressure which Sydney wasnt able to do. I think we will win by 4 + goals.
-
As poo as we were Sat nite, 28 tackles in our F50 is impressive- particularly when almost all came after qtr time
-
Tagging Tom Mitchell would go a long way towards winning.
-
Are we favorites ??
Yep. Just.
According to CrownBet:
Richmond $1.82
Hawthorn $2.00

Im not a betting man ...But I could be tempted to put a couple of hundred bucks on the Hawks .
This is your typical win/win situation.

No Hodge

Have it on good authority that Hodge isnt playing.

Heard Hodge is certain starter
-
Think he'll appeal the MRP and win?
-
Heard a rumour Hodge isnt playing
-
Ok, apparently hes been offered two weeks no reduction
-
Noticed Hall was allowed to get the ball as much as he wanted on Saturday night.
Any chance that Dumma will get someone to tag Mitchell and stop him getting 40 possessions?

No chance.
Who does he drop for his buttboy, Chester Pretia?

Can only think it's desperation. If the Hawks lose to us it's season over for them.

Yeah but were they effective? Hardly...

Match preview: Richmond v Hawthorn
afl.com.au
1 August 2017
SUMMARY
The Tigers could end the Hawks' finals charge once and for all on Sunday and every September-bound team will be watching in anticipation. Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has manufactured a magnificent revival from 1-5, throwing the magnets around and getting the best out of Jack Gunston, James Sicily and Taylor Duryea in new roles. But with eight wins and one draw, his team must win its remaining four games to stay in the hunt. Richmond (12-6) sits fourth and starts round 20 with a one-match buffer to protect. The Tigers have structural issues in attack they are dealing with, but have won three matches on the trot. Damien Hardwick's men are winning ugly when they need to, with superstar midfielder – and new Brownlow Medal favourite – Dustin Martin in unrivalled form after his 11th game this season with 30 possessions or more against the Suns in round 19.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Sunday, August 6, 3.20pm AEST
LAST FIVE TIMES
R18, 2016, Hawthorn 16.18 (114) d Richmond 5.14 (44) at the MCG
R7, 2016, Hawthorn 21.10 (136) d Richmond 13.12 (90) at the MCG
R18, 2015, Richmond 10.11 (71) d Hawthorn 7.11 (53) at the MCG
R6, 2014, Hawthorn 18.10 (118) d Richmond 7.10 (52) at the MCG
R19, 2013, Richmond 16.11 (107) d Hawthorn 9.12 (66) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Hawthorn took a 10-point lead into the main break when these sides last met before kicking 12 goals to two in the second half. The Hawks had 99 more disposals, 19 more inside 50s and 94 more uncontested possessions.
2. The Tigers continue to be difficult to score against with the second-best defence this season, conceding only 78 points a game. They have given up 100 points in a game twice, the equal best of any side.
3. The Tigers are a low disposal team this season, ranked No.17 with an average of 363.2 a game. The Hawks rank No.8 with an average of 392.1 a game.
4. This clash will be the first time since round 12, 2006 that the teams will play with Richmond higher on the ladder than Hawthorn.
5. Hawthorn’s uncontested possession game has returned in recent weeks, with the team now ranked No.3 with an average of 255.8 a game. The Tigers rank last at an average of 214.9 a game.
6. After a steady decline in form last season, Brandon Ellis has been climbing the Schick AFL Player Ratings this season. He has moved from No.263 overall at the start of the season to a career-high No.174. He ranks No.8 at Richmond.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR … Josh Caddy.
The former Cat was played as a deeper forward against Gold Coast and will again need to compete in the air against the Hawks. Regardless of whether Jack Riewoldt is passed fit, the Tigers will need an aerial presence to combat intercept defenders James Sicily and Jack Gunston, who are thriving in new roles. Caddy will need to compete as an undersized forward, but he has the physical strength and ability in the air to make the role work.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 12 points

Massive.. With GWS decimated by injuries we could end up 2nd or 5th come sunday night
So what's your prediction FH, do we beat the Hawks when it means something?
-
i think we have shown we can beat teams when it matters e.g Port.
It comes down to who wants it more. They are hungry for finals regardless of what they may spruik.
Hope it peees down as i think its ours to lose.
-
How do we kick any goals? Rioli for 4? I have a bad feeling about this even with Hodge out.
-
I can't stand this mob almost as much as I hate the Cheats.
It seems like, in recent history, when we beat them they normally go on and win the premiership and when they beat us they seem to miss out.
I just think it's about time these fickle supporters got a dose of serious mediocrity.
I doubt it will happen with Clarkson in charge he's a proven gun.
I can only hope the wheels fall completely off and all those fickle supporters finally see more than a decade of rubbish and then the AFL community will witness the biggest exodus since Moses.
I can only hope we can finish them off tomorrow.
Does anyone think our team will do this for us?
-
Dimma has generally coached well against his old master, and hopefully Caracella bestows some of his Geelong knowledge which saw them have the edge over the Hawks too. Any other team, any other week I'd be truly pessimistic about this game but I'm actually pretty comfortable. I'm probably wrong, but oh well ;D
-
Would have tipped us if Jack was in....

So no rain but it'll still be wet from earlier rain ?
-
Pressure, winning the contested footy, quick movement of the footy using our speed and taking our chances are the keys for us today.
:gotigers
So no rain but it'll still be wet from earlier rain ?
The grounds have good drainage these days. Bright sunshine now. The surface would've dried out a fair bit by now.
-
Damn! Good quick transition. Nank should have snapped that.
1 - 0.
-
That's holding the ball. Whitecross had a heap of time.
8 - 1
-
What kind of handpass was that, Houli? :huh Then gives away the free to give the Hawks their first.
8 - 7
-
That should have been a free to Caddy. He was the only one going for it and the Hawk defender just pushes him ::).
-
Houli gifts a goal >:(
-
What kind of handpass was that, Houli? :huh Then gives away the free to give the Hawks their first.
8 - 7
Pathetic by Houli
-
We get it back and Corey Ellis has a set shot from 30 out. Starts right and swings back. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 2.2-14
Haw 1.1-7
-
Houli kick straight to Sicily
-
Nice Shedder (no longer Titch ;D). Lowers his eyes to Rioli 25m out. Goal :gotigers.
Rich 3.2-20
Haw 1.1-7
-
Houli kick straight to Sicily
Should have given it off but tried to dodge the oncoming Hawk and stuffed it up with the hurried kick.
-
Geez Astbury is in form. Great inboard pass. Butler chips to Cotch 35m out. But he misses :P.
21 - 7
-
Houli kick straight to Sicily
Should have given it off but tried to dodge the oncoming Hawk and stuffed it up with the hurried kick.
He looks panicked early on. Its a worry.
-
Astbury :thumbsup
-
Today's umpire interpretation:
You're allowed to just push a player up in the air going for the mark.
::)
-
Tripping the light fantastic by Shedder at HB opens up the Hawks. Top kick to Caddy at HF. His long to Cotch is a free. Goal :gotigers
Rich 4.3-27
Haw 1.3-9
-
Overkicked it :banghead
That should have been a goal.
28 - 9
-
Well we are 'on' today. So far anyway...
-
Every time BEllis tackles he goes to ground even when he doesn't need to. Soft prick!
-
Wanting it more so far. Great courage by Miles wins the mark.
Bulter's kick smothered but he regains it and chips to Corey Ellis 40m out. Goal :gotigers
Rich 5.4-34
Haw 1.3-9
-
C ellis 2 goals and working very hard off the ball. Great effort so far son :cheers
-
Quarter time
Richmond 5.4-34
Hawthorn 1.3-9
Goals: C.Ellis 2, Cotchin, Caddy, Rioli.
Good stuff so far. Need to keep it up.
-
Finding a target inside 50 has been elite. Hope they don't run out of gas.
-
We have got some real quality in Rance, Grimes and Vlastuin in our backline.
Fantastic players all 3.
-
Astbury too I reckon ^
-
Astbury too I reckon ^
Not at the same level as those 3 but getting better with each game.
The other 3 are elite. A graders in their positions imo.
-
Astbury too I reckon ^
Yep. Has to be in AA consideration
-
I like the coaching of putting Caddy as a bit of a "bail out target" in the air in our forwardline.
-
Our tackling, pressure and efficiency with the footy is doing the job. The Hawks have actually had more of the ball and clearances but it's short handballs as they are always under our pressure. We've been more direct with kicks (59k, 39h). 9 scoring shots from just 12 inside 50s.
-
Hawks 5/1
Too good to pass up
-
You idiot, ump :facepalm.
-
Hawks 5/1
Too good to pass up
Sage.
-
Houli pathetic again.
-
LOL that being play on. Umm, ump there is a thing such as momentum.
Nank misses from the pocket.
35 - 11
-
Houli out on the full.
Having a blinder
-
Seriously, how was that not holding the ball against Sicily?
-
GET OFF HOULI. GET HIM OFF NOW
-
Leigh Fisher was a poo player and is a stuffen poo umpire!!!!
-
Can we actually get our hands on the footy Tiges rather than trying to kick it out of the air. Hawks winning the 50/50s so far this qtr.
Lucky that shot was OOTF.
-
Georgie, you have teammates to give off to.
-
Good play by Cotch. A chain of hands ends up with Macca who finds Georgie 30 out. Gives off to Caddy for some reason :huh. Caddy misses from 25 out :scream.
36 - 17
-
We're being too unselfish inside F50.
Hawk defender's quick kick goes straight to Miles 40 out. Falls short and rushed.
Geez, you've got to take your chances, Tigers :banghead.
37 - 17
-
How was that not in thw back?
-
Caddy to 25m out contest. Butler snap misses.
38 -17
-
LOL @ Soldo. The Hawk defender just left him alone in the goalsquare and Butler finds him.
First ever goal to Ivan Mk.II :clapping :gotigers
Rich 6.8-44
Haw 2.5-17
-
Poor option Rioli. Dusty needed to look to his left before that though.
-
That's better, Bachar.
-
Don't we have a head, ump? Two misses high tackles.
-
Don't we have a head, ump? Two misses high tackles.
13-7 free kicks
Bronx cheers from Hawks supporters when they get one
Reckon umps have been ok (so far)
-
Half-time
Richmond 5.4 6.8-44
Hawthorn 1.3 2.5-17
Goals: C.Ellis 2, Cotchin, Caddy, Rioli, Soldo.
-
A little more composure with the ball and we blow this game apart. Also need to convert our chances otherwise it's GWS, Freo, Swans all over again.
-
Until he learns how to draw a free or break a tackle, If Prestia could please stop stepping into tackles when he collects the ball, that would be great.
Thanks.
-
Don't we have a head, ump? Two misses high tackles.
13-7 free kicks
Bronx cheers from Hawks supporters when they get one
Reckon umps have been ok (so far)
Only 3 of those 13 were in the second qtr ;).
-
Halal Houli butchering the ball gifting the Dawks prime ball. I've counted six this half alone. :help
-
Prestia does look like he's moving well tho.

Rance through the middle to Georgie at HF who chips to Caddy 45 out. Point.
45 - 18

Dusty :gotigers
Rich 7.9-51
Haw 2.6-18

Great transition from defence, Tigers :clapping. Opened up the Hawks again.

If I was Dimma I'll be giving them a blast at 3/4 time. Lairising in the last 10-15 mins has kept the Hawks in it :banghead.
-
Stoppages with 9 secs to. The quick kick by a Hawk lands with Lambert 52 out. On line but falls short.
3/4 time
Richmond 5.4 6.8 9.10-64
Hawthorn 1.3 2.5 4.8-32
Goals: C.Ellis 2, Martin 2, Caddy 2, Cotchin, Rioli, Soldo.
-
Cmon boys - put these Dawkes to bed
-
Keep attacking boys, keep attacking.
-
Some Tigers clearly thought the game was done and dusted at 64 - 18 after 3 straight goals and we'd kick away. Getting too cute with possession trying to pull off low percentage options.
-
Will be happy with a 1 point win against these scumbags
-
Just warning everyone.....if the boys lose this one I'll lose the plot.
-
Yep lairising
-
Straight out of the middle. Caddy on the run from 45 ... misses :scream.
65 - 32

Well read, Brandon. Intercepts the kick-out.

The first half was pretty electric.
Hawthorn never really challenged.
Geelong look rather banged up .
Things look like they are magically falling into piece.

Was worth getting out of my sick bed to make it to the game
There was alot to like today
Alot
I take the 1st quarter as a preview as to whats possible when we need to perform. I hope when the heat is turn up we can bring that for 4 quarters.
Shiny cups are won off the back off 4 quarter efforts like that

I really liked Lambert and Martin's game. The defence was super disciplined also. I can't give Caddy 3 votes only because he missed some absolute sitters when the game was more in the balance. He kicked a couple of junk time goals when the game was already won.
Still goals is what wins you matches and at least he kicked 4 and when you look at the bad misses from.Castagna when he tried to dance past the second Hawk instead of just going for the left foot drop punt/right foot banana or Miles when he tried to dish it off back to Martin instead of just kicking the goal you would say Caddy's 4 was definitely an above average performance
-
Caddy played a really good game. He presented well and was a threat in the forwardline. Rioli's pressure and the things he does off the ball are great to watch. Nank, Martin and Prestia were all good. The negatives for me were the games of Houli and Grigg. Both played poorly and should be dropped but won't be.
-
Although he didn't get on the end of any, I thought butler was very good. Looked really composed with the ball and made the right decisions. His ability to just get a toe on the ball to keep the wave of pressure rolling is so valuable

Soldo is Improving week by week for me deserves credit. What a people's thoughts? .

Some of his tap work was awesome - straight down the throat of our onballers. Or maybe thats what ruckmen should just do. After putting up with Hampson for so long its refreshing to see.

He dropped back and took a few marks in defense and pushed up and kicked a goal.
he is a work in progress but he is going OK.

Still eligible for the rising star, only a baby

Disagree - thought he was far too often either caught in two minds or spending it before he got it and it's actually a bit of an issue with him....and I say that as one of his biggest supporters who was first here to back him in....
-
Really, I'd noticed that in other games but thought last night he was patient and made the right decision.
-
Yeah once or twice he did but even then it was after he stuffed up initially...like when he set up the shot on goal for CEllis (?)

Not sure where to put this but Cotch doesn't mind the using the 'don't argue' lately either. It set up this play:

Yeah I love Butlers pace, agility and skills but sometimes he gets the ball and starts to overthink when he should just move the bloody thing on. He gets caught out too many times being cute. Castagna is probably less skilled with the ball, just as fast but he doesn't take unnecessary risks and so far has been more effective.

well he had a shot, got smothered then hit up Ellis on the left. Good play I reckon.
-
Butler played okay against the Hawks, He set up multiple goals and importantly cleaned up his own mistakes- example being his kick to Georgie that fell short. He followed through got the handpass and set up a goal. His mark from Dustin's kick was also very good. I agree with the criticism in recent times he has appeared to be caught in two minds.

Butler's good enough to win a final off his own boot. He's definitely someone who should just think less when he has the pill

That's the trouble when you're not a great finisher and you know it. You're always thinking someone else is likely to be in a better position to kick the goal.
-
Think all of our forwards are too unselfish at times, i realise its hard to make the right decisions under pressure but sometimes the easier option is for the player with the ball to take responsibility and put it between the big sticks. Too often we see botched passes or stupid handballs putting others under pressure when a shot from 30 metres should have been taken in the first place.

Can someone explain what Lambert's role was against Hawthorn.
:cheers
-
His ball use was great. Hit targets inside 50. Made the right decisions. Wish he kicked that goal on the run instead of being mowed down

Something just seems off with him hey? Concentration? Confidence? Who knows.
I can confirm Dio was first to back him in

Proof or you are just backing a mate. :snidegrin
-
Butler is awesome don't get me wrong, just needs to go with his first instinct and not second guess himself or overthink it, that is what stuffs him when he gets tripped up.

In the first five rounds I felt the opposite. I though Butler was too selfish and would blaze away and wouldn't even look. He seems to have 180 in recent weeks
-
He will be a good acquisition.

Thought it was common knowledge me and Dio actually dislike each other a fair bit. But whatever helps suit your story

You shouldn't dislike other posters. You may not agree with them. You may find them tiresome or argumentative. However, we don't know each other well enough to dislike them IMHO. I've had my arguments (some very heated as you know) and sometimes got angry enough to call others names, but in the end we are all just internet comrades with a similar passion - the RFC. :gotigers

I hate you all and hope you all die the day before we win our next flag....

But it's okay to be mates? You getting dizzy with all these back flips?
Oh but Dio and I actually know each other outside the forum but that's a story for another day

YR is actually my son.....we've been estranged for years after I walked out on him & his mother and he still hasn't forgiven me....though moreso for making him follow Richmond.....which is fair enough really....

Wow, did you just say that!
It doesn't take much to rattle you does it Dio.
The big boy thing would be to say you got that one horribly wrong and move on. But I'm starting to think you are just too stupid. :shh
Tomorrow's a new day, I hope it's a better one for ya! :cheers

I'd strongly wager you've never seen a mirror you didn't like...but I digress.... refer to my reply to you in the other thread....the first point of which you only just further proved with your reply here.......

Just watched a reply of the game.
One thing that I noticed which slightly concerns me coming in to the finals is the way Hawthorn was able to open us up when we lost possession. More so after quarter time.
Could have been due to our players pushing a little to hard to make a statement in this game, but there were times where we looked very exposed after a turnover. It is not a feeling I have had after any other game this season. Our backline structure was not as effective as it has been this season in covering those holes. Typically when we have turned the ball over this season, particularly across the half forward line, the opposition hasn't had the chance to move the ball quickly and hurt us because the defence has provided that solid zone across the back half of the field. I thought Hawthorn showed a lot of forward run at times in this game, and there seemed to be a lot more space for them to run in to.
Hopefully it is either just an aberration or just me being overly pessimistic, and not a sign that the opposition are finding a weakness in our game plan.

No I think that's a reasonable observation. I've been concerned with exactly that all season. I thought even Carlton exposed us rd one with counter plays.
-
Lets not forget that the hawks have been in some hot form of late and theyre still very good at being able to dissect most sides structures. There isnt a side in the comp that doesnt cop transitional goals over the top from turnovers. Personally I think we've gone from the worst in the league last year to one of the best at covering and protecting it this season.

First half of the Collingwood game too. Hand balled their way out of traffic and exposed us badly but couldn't capitalise
