Richmond has used its first selection (No. 16 overall) in the 2018 Rookie Draft to recruit VFL Tiger Jake Aarts.
Here is a summary of what Richmond fans can expect to see from Aarts on-field...
Date of birth: 08/11/94
Position: Forward
Height: 180cm
Weight: 76kg
Club: Richmond VFL
Since coming to Punt Road Oval in 2015, Aarts asserted himself as a key component of the VFL Tigers' forward line. He possesses classy football smarts and an ability to hit the scoreboard, as well as fierce competitiveness.
In the 2018 VFL season, of which he played 16 games, he amassed an average of 13 disposals, four tackles and over one goal and one score assist per game.
A member of Richmond's VFL leadership group, Aarts impressed this year with his hard-work and determination.
Speaking to VFL.com.au before the draft, Aarts said he has made the most of his opportunities on the field this year in the hopes he would be recognised for his efforts.
“I am a hard worker, I train hard, play hard and (I’m) a really competitive player,” Aarts said.
“My mindset has sort of been the same every year since I was a junior – just keep working hard and the rewards will come from that.”
After witnessing his consistent forward half pressure and tenacious nature over the past few seasons, the Club is excited to welcome Aarts into the senior team.

Chol was starting to show a bit in the VFL before he got hurt this year. I’m happy to use a rookie pick on him.
-
probably not the best option but at least it shows other players we will give them a pathway and a chance if they play vfl for us.

“’Aartsy’s’ one that’s really brought into the (Richmond VFL) program. Craig McRae (Richmond VFL coach) has been a massive fan of what he’s been able to do and how he improves, on and off the field. He’s really reliable and gets the job done. He’s improved his speed and power, he can kick goals, and pressure . . . He deserves a chance. It doesn’t matter where you fit on the national or the rookie list now, you can get a chance to play if the coaches are happy what you’re doing.”

Mature-age Tiger rookie nails the art of hard work
AFL.com.au
Jennifer Phelan
Nov 27, 2018
JAKE Aarts can't wait to swap his nail bag and hammer for a pair of footy boots and a mouthguard, with six years of toiling away in the VFL finally paying off for the new Richmond rookie.
The 24-year-old has served a lengthy apprenticeship, playing first for the now-defunct Bendigo back in 2013-14 and then for the Tigers' own VFL team from 2015-18.
He's paired the part-time football schedule with work as a qualified carpenter, something he'll shelve after being welcomed onto the Tigers' AFL roster for 2019 via pick No.16 in Friday's NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
"I was on the tools every day, working all day and then coming to training … long hours, long days," Aarts said on Tuesday at Punt Road.
"I was used to it so I just kept working hard and now I'm here.
"I'll put the nail bag down for a bit now."
The super fit small forward admitted it had been a surreal experience to arrive back at the club this week, familiar with the surroundings but with a whole new outlook.
As he fronted the media on day two of pre-season for the new crop of Tigers, he said his experiences at the club over the last four years had already made his transition easier.
Considered a leader within the VFL team, he said he was keen to help the four draftees – Riley Collier-Dawkins, Jack Ross, Fraser Turner and Luke English – find their feet.
"It's different for me, I've come in for my first day yesterday and I'm saying g'day to all the boys that I already know," he said.
"It's different for the other draftees, they're introduced as new players.
"I'm just trying to help the younger boys get to know everyone as well and if I can help them, it will go a long way to helping them become good players and people as well."
Aarts doesn't feel like he did anything remarkable across his 16 VFL games this season, nor does he really know what changed for him in his sixth season at the level.
But the high-pressure forward from Beaconsfield knew something was working when his phone started to ring during the year, which is something that hadn't happened before.
"I had a couple of calls mid-year that got my hopes up a little bit and sort of drove me to keep going and keep playing good footy," he said.
"Once the interest started coming in, I thought, 'Geez, something could happen here'.
"I haven't done anything a lot different, but I was obviously doing something different that they liked."
As each year came and went and he wasn't offered a spot on an AFL list, Aarts conceded there were times where he wondered if it was all worth it.
But his persistent work ethic, which has been heralded by the Tigers, appears to be what's made 2018 the exception.
"I don't know what kept me going, there were times when I sort of questioned it," he said.
"I just kept wanting to do the best I could every year and putting one foot in front of the other.
"There wasn't something that stood out to me; consistency and hard work are some things I pride myself on day in day out, with anything I do in life.
"It's probably one thing that got me through – hard work."
Aarts is one of three listed Richmond rookies along with the re-drafted Jacob Townsend and Mabior Chol, with ex-Saint and Sun Maverick Weller and possibly Perth midfielder Sydney Stack to be offered the last two spots via the new supplemental selection rules after December 1.

As Willy posted in the team thread.
Jake Aarts, a mature-aged rookie who spent six years in the VFL, before joining the Tigers in 2018, will become the club’s first debutant this season.
The hardworking 25-year-old small forward has been a consistent performer in Richmond’s recent scratch matches and will replace premiership player Sydney Stack, who was dropped.

Let's hope he brings a bit more enthusiasm into our forward line, and whole team for that matter, forward line especially has looked flat to say the least.
-
Don't really rate him but he's earned a crack and can't do any worse than what others have served up so far....hopefully he'll bring some enthusiasm and desperation knowing his spot on the list next year is probably hanging by a thread... :shh

From what I have seen of him I don't think he is a chance to be better than Bolton but here is hoping. Being 1-1-4 or 2-1-3 doesn't seem like much of a difference but in a 17 round season it is. Hope this us a good selection decision.
-
Hope he proves me wrong but I see Matty Arnott mark II :rollin

They all are lately and that's our real problem. But we haven't seen Martin, Prestia, Lambert, Cotchin and others dropped for the same behaviour... It will be our downfall unfortunately.

All the best Jake. Hope you bring the effort and intensity this side needs.

“I was a bit speechless. I was just trying to get my thoughts about it. I calmed down a bit after that. It was good to just enjoy that moment with them,” Aarts told the club’s website.
“I’ve been in the squad a few times. For whatever reason I haven’t got in.”
He confirmed he had contemplated giving up his AFL dream at different times. “I had a few stages where I didn’t think I would continue,'' he said.
"To finally get my opportunity to play with some really good mates, and for the club that I grew up barracking for, it’s pretty special.
"It’s been a big journey and I’m looking forward to it."

Role player who did a job. He was ok.

Couple of shaky moments when the pressure increased but he was hardly alone there ...had a crack and played his role well enough for the most part nothing more, nothing less... :shh

The golden move that paved the way for Aarts to become a Tiger
Adam Bourke
Bendigo Advertiser
10 July 2020
A conversation with Aussie Jones at the end of 2012 was a sliding door moment for Jake Aarts.
Jones wanted Aarts to follow him from Beaconsfield to Bendigo to play for the Bendigo Gold in the VFL.
The then 17-year-old Aarts wasn't convinced it was the right thing to do. It's a good thing Aarts listened to the former St Kilda star.
Last Sunday he realised his childhood dream when he made his AFL debut for Richmond - the club he supported passionately as a child.
"I really wasn't sure whether to go to Bendigo or not,'' 25-year-old Aarts said this week.
"Aussie was on my back to go with him and all my mates at Beaconsfield wanted me to go.
"They could see what an opportunity like that could lead to whereas I was probably more focused on playing at Beaconsfield with my mates.
"I'm so glad that I did make the move. Not only did it help me get to Richmond, but it took me further in life."
Jake Aarts, Aussie Jones and Alik Magin after the Bendigo Gold's final game in 2014.
While the Gold were the whipping boys of the VFL in Aarts two years in Bendigo, the experience of playing in arguably the second-best competition in Australia made the midfielder/forward a better footballer.
"I loved my two years in Bendigo. I know we didn't have the team success we wanted, but I met some great people and I had a lot of fun,'' Aarts said.
"Playing on the QEO was a great place to play footy. It's one of the best grounds I've had the chance to play on.
"The night games we played at the QEO were great because it was always against good opposition and we'd get a good crowd there to watch us.
"We were always the underdogs and, even though we'd get smacked around a bit, it was a lot of fun."
Gold coach Jones was critical to Aarts' development.
"As a coach and person, Aussie's relationship with his players was great.
"He got the most out of a side that really wasn't going anywhere and made sure we enjoyed what we were doing.
"Any player that played on those teams would tell you how much fun they had regardless of the results.
"It was a tough time for the club, particularly Aussie, but I can look back on those two years now, knowing that I'm glad that I played for the Gold."
Without that experience with the Gold, Aarts might not have been picked up by Richmond's VFL team.
His performances at VFL level with Richmond led the Tigers to elevating him to their AFL rookie list a couple of years ago.
Aarts' never say die attitude and impressive work ethic led him to a well-deserved AFL debut last Sunday against Melbourne at the MCG.
Normally, a Richmond-Melbourne game at the MCG would attract a crowd of at least 50,000 people.
"It was different, but I was so focused on what I had to do that I didn't even notice that no-one was there,'' he said.
"I was that in the zone it wouldn't have mattered if there was a crowd there or not. I was just focused on what I had to do to help the team.
"I was told on Thursday that I was playing then it all happened so quick that I really didn't have time to get nervous.
"By the time I ran out on the ground on Sunday it was just like another game of footy.
"I really didn't change anything in my preparation compared to any game I've played in the last four years.
"To be honest, it probably still hasn't sunk in properly (that I played AFL).
"All I wanted to do was play my role."
Play his role is exactly what Aarts did.
Playing mainly across half-forward, Aarts collected 15 possessions, three marks and two tackles in a more than credible debut.
"I'd been waiting a long time, so to finally get that first one out of the way was great."
His first kick in league football set up a goal to key forward Tom Lynch.
"That first kick was a bit of a shank, for sure, but I'll take that one,'' Aarts said with a chuckle.
The morning after his first game Aarts joined his team-mates on a flight to the Gold Coast where the Tigers will be based in a hub for at least the next two weeks.
"I was excited to get out of Melbourne,'' Aarts said.
"We've settled in pretty well. The weather is good up here and we're making the most of a strange situation.
"All our families are back in Melbourne in lockdown which is not ideal.
"The good thing up here is that we're all together in our hub and we can build on our relationships and connections.
"Your on-field connection comes from your off-field connections, so it's good to be together as a team again."
Connections with former team-mates provided Aarts with one of the highlights of his AFL debut.
In the lead-up to the game he received a plethora of congratulatory messages from his former Bendigo Gold team-mates.
"I do keep in touch with the Bendigo Gold boys regularly,'' Aarts said.
"Most, if not all, sent me a message last week which was great. That says a lot about the club."

Needs to work on his set shot goalkicking. He could've/should've kicked 5.
-
He does need to improve that set shots. What I like tho he is always involved in games.
-
Aarts has kicked 8 goals from his past 4 games and now sits sixth in our goalkicking for 2020 despite having played fewer games. Two goals per game is a decent return for a small forward. Currently, he is playing his role in the team.
-
Sure is and stays involved in games to sets up a few teamates and does hard defence work to.
-
Was helping the defence out on Tuesday night as well.
-
Trying to find a individual positive (http://oneeyed-richmond.com/forum/Smileys/default/undecided.gif). Aarts arguably our best performing small forward over the past month. Another two goals and 6 scoring involvements from our low inside 50s tonight.
-
Great development but I would like to see more Pressure and tackles from him especially inside F50.

Last night he was our only decent small forward
But having said I've been pleasantly surprised by how he is going. He is going very well indeed
-
Hungry for a career and plays like it. A little beauty to have roaming around the forward line. Played as a mid in the VFL at times so i wouldn't be surprised to see him spend some time in the middle as we need an improvement in this areas ASAP.
-
Has become quite reliable in front of goal after initially having the heeby jeebys
Has a go too.
Proud of him

'Smocker' no shocker: The unlikely rise of Richmond forward Jake Aarts
Paul Amy
Leader
17 August 2020
At Bendigo Gold, they called him “Smocker’’.
As in art smock.
More than his nickname, teammates remember Jake Aarts for his tenacity and toughness.
He was only a little fellow, 177cm, but he was game and “as hard as nails’’, former VFL Gold captain Steve Stroobants remembers.
Aarts had just turned 18 when he joined Bendigo in 2013, following coach Aussie Jones from Beaconsfield.
Seven years later, he’s playing in Richmond’s AFL team, and former Gold players are relishing watching Aarts make a good go of his belated chance at the highest level.
“Funny little bloke, he loved a joke, tenacious – the type of footy he played for the size of him, I’ve never seen anyone want body contact more or apply tackling pressure more than he did – and he was always playing undersized, but he just didn’t care,’’ Stroobants recalled.
“Great teammate to have because of the way he went about it. Worked his butt off. All the boys loved him because of how he was around the club. He’s a legend, ‘Aartsy’.’’
Aarts linked with Richmond’s VFL team when the Gold dropped out of the state league at the end of 2014.
The Tigers rewarded him for four dedicated seasons by adding him to their rookie list for 2019.
But he had to wait until this year to make his AFL debut at the age of 25, with 81 VFL matches behind him.
Contacted last Thursday, former St Kilda star Jones said he was getting a thrill watching Aarts play for the Tigers as a pressure-bearing small forward.
Jones was coaching Beaconsfield in 2012 when he encountered Aarts playing under-age football at the club. He was young, small and slight, but Jones decided to play him in the senior team.
“I just said, ‘We’ve got to get this kid in the ones, he’s too good to be playing in the ‘unders’,’’ Jones recalled. “Because he was a see ball-get ball kid, there were a few worries he might get injured. But he walked into senior footy, absolutely no worries.’’
When Jones got the Bendigo coaching position he encouraged Aarts to follow him to the regional city.
He stayed with Jones and his family, living in an old garage the coach fitted out with plaster and power.
Later he moved in with teammates Matt Farrelly and Galen Munari. He stays in touch with the Gold players.
“It was a pretty easy call for me to take him to Bendigo, because I’d seen his work ethic and I knew what he would do if he got the opportunity,’’ Jones said.
“The best way to describe Jake is, if you give him a task, he’ll do it even if no one’s watching, to absolute maximum capacity. Some people can drop off if there are no eyes on them but Jake had that work ethic and that passion to play at the level.
“It took him a while – there were probably a couple of knocks on his kicking – but now people see him play and they see that aggression and hardness … he’s a real competitor, mate.’’
Jones thinks Aarts was still eligible to play in the NAB League when he joined Bendigo, but he was never in TAC Cup calculations.
He went to Bendigo with no promises he would make the list but he presented superbly and trained fanatically.
Gold officials agreed with their new coach that the “Beacy boy’’ was worth going with. He played mostly on a wing and at half forward.
“Geez he was tough. Hard as nails,’’ Stroobants said. “Didn’t care who was in his way, if the ball was there, he was going for it.’’
Transferring to Richmond, Aarts developed into a specialist small forward, valuing tackles, chases and shepherds as much as goals.
He didn’t top any possession counts, but he did make his pressure count.
“He’s a persistent little bugger … he always wanted to better himself,’’ Tigers VFL assistant coach Marc Sophoulis said last Friday.
“He’s the same person now as he was when he came to the club, in that he’s hardworking, does everything for his teammates, very selfless, wants to play his role for the team, never wants to be the standout player. That’s what he’s taken into the AFL. He’s a great leader through actions.’’
Sophoulis said Aarts would go to VFL training straight from his work as a chippie and stay on for “extras’’.
Aarts made his AFL debut against Melbourne in Round 5 and has played every game since. He’s kicked at least one goal in his past five matches.
Jones and Stroobants are tuning in.
“It’s a great story. I’m sort of living my old career through him,’’ Jones said. “I just love watching him play, because I know how much he earned it.’’
Stroobants said: “I’m not a Richmond supporter. But ‘Smocker’ might end up converting me!’’

Stepped up tonight after a few quiet ones.
-
Loved his game
Pressure was elite
-
Very good game again last night.
He is clever and he is footy smart and he has a real crack.
I love watching this guy play- he deserves everything he is getting.
-
Very good game. Courageous.
-
Butler vs aarts, aarts is winning imo
-
Great body work and goal
-
This is the type of footy we want to see.
He was solid with pressure (13 pressure acts) throughout the game and laid a couple of good tackles.
Prepared to run all over the ground to help out where needed. He reads the ball very well off the pack too. Let’s hope we see him improve as his confidence grows leading into finals.

At least look like you're trying to get rid of it son.... :shh

Hes going ok the young man. Could be a premiership player in a few weeks if he can keep up his form and kick a couple of goals a game.
-
It was the fifth time in 13 appearances in his debut season of AFL football that Aarts has scored multiple goals.
Overall, the 25-year-old has kicked 14 goals, at an impressive average for a small forward of 1.1 per game.
Aarts also impressed in yesterday’s final home-and-away round clash of the 2020 season with his hard, two-way running and defensive pressure.

Maybe it was unrealistic to expect his fairytale debut year to translate into finals. Had eight touches and didn’t do too much on the scoreboard.

‘You’ve just got to move on pretty quickly’: Tiger reflects on flag near miss
Daniel Cherny
The Age
March 19, 2021
Richmond forward Jake Aarts says he moved on quickly from the initial disappointment of missing the Tigers’ 2020 premiership despite being a mainstay of the team for much of the season.
Having made his AFL debut at 25 after years toiling at local level and then in the VFL, Aarts played 14 straight games last year but was dropped after the qualifying final loss to Brisbane, meaning he was on the outer when the Tigers went back-to-back by beating Geelong at the Gabba.
Aarts kicked two goals in Richmond’s 25-point win over Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night. It was his second AFL game at the venue but the first time his family and friends had been able to see him play at the top level in person.
“When we played last time there was no one there, then obviously in the hub I couldn’t get any family and friends there. When I found out I was playing we got some tickets together and got some family and good mates there,” a hoarse Aarts said.
“It didn’t feel like 50,000, it felt like a lot more.″
While he said missing last year’s decider was a bit of a motivating factor, Aarts was largely philosophical about being edged out in October.
“I didn’t play last year in the granny and I was a bit flat about that but you’ve just got to move on pretty quickly. There’s no point in me [stewing] on that, so I just got to work this pre-season, had a good pre-season and set myself up for this year. That’s what I think I’ve done,” Aarts said.
He said coach Damien Hardwick had let him down gently.
“We had a few players coming back from injury. The spots were always going to be tight, it was always going to be tight to play in the team, right from the start of the year, and even still now. He said I’d had a great year, and I was really proud of what I was able to do as well. It wasn’t ‘you’re out of form, this is why we’re dropping you’, it was more a ‘this is what’s happening and it’s unfortunate but just the way we’ve got to go’. I took it pretty well. I’m not one to sit and dwell on things,” Aarts said, noting that he continues to focus on mindfulness and having balance in his life.
“There’s always a little bit of go a bit harder or play a bit harder just because you’ve missed out, but I haven’t done a lot different to what I’ve done the last couple of pre-seasons. I’ve been able to train all pre-season. Last year I was a bit injured.”
Picked up as a rookie less than a month before his 24th birthday, Aarts is a qualified carpenter – still trying to upskill during his playing days – and said he came close to abandoning his AFL dream after being bypassed in so many drafts.
“There was definitely times when I didn’t think it was going to happen,” he said. “I haven’t really sat back and reflected on what I’ve done, I’ve just tried to keep going.”
Honing in on Thursday night, Aarts said the new interchange cap and a return to 20-minute quarters had left him exhausted by the end of the match.
“It was challenging, it was tough. I’m a reasonably fit person but I was absolutely gassed,” he said.
Aarts marvelled at the brilliance of three-time Norm Smith Medallist Dustin Martin, who was best afield again on Thursday night.
“Just when you think he can’t get better, he does something else,” he said.

Gives his all but needs to have impact
Has to go out of the side next week
-
He is a VFL standard player
-
Yeah think he needs a rest.
Bit concerned with our depth now. Who is putting pressure on his spot? The new boys today we're average at best I thought.
-
Selfish and useless
-
Selfish and useless
Yep, would rather see us develope Rioli jr through the seniors than see this guy play again!
-
Rubbish game tonight.
-
At least he has a go. Didn't go to ground with Aliir jumping into him. Kicked a goal too.
-
Gone from being a depth player to an out-of-his-depth player... :shh
-
Yeah think he needs a rest.
Bit concerned with our depth now. Who is putting pressure on his spot? The new boys today we're average at best I thought.
Throw Maurice in the deep end ?

Nope.
If we can't play RCD after 2+ years on the list at 191/90 then we sure as hell shouldn't be playing MRJ by the same logic.
Alternatively...if they are good enough just play them. The best players are ready to go immediately or after 1 year or so and they just adjust + improve as they go.

Yep he always has a go unlike another small forward we have.
-
Jake is actually having a good game :o.
-
Jake is actually having a good game :o.
Agree
-
Good set shot. And as I have said before, doesn't go to ground easily.
Maybe he knows he'll be the one making one for a MRJ debut and he's actually motivated?
-
Jake is actually having a good game :o.
Playing to his limitations :clapping
Does that he usually plays well

Jake Aarts’ capacity to hit the scoreboard was a rare Richmond highlight in the Round 8 loss to Geelong at the MCG. Aarts was the Tigers’ equal-leading goalkicker with three goals in the match.
He has kicked at least one goal in each of Richmond’s eight games so far in season 2021 and, overall, has 11 to his credit, which places him third on the Club’s goalkicking list, behind Jack Riewoldt (21) and Tom Lynch (14).

-
Enjoyed his hardness around the contest last night. We needed this and I thought he delivered.
-
Wasn't bad but he's the one I'd drop if we bring in CCJ.... :shh
-
Aarts' soccer goal has been nominated for Goal of the Week:
https://www.afl.com.au/goal-of-the-year
-
Arguably his best game for the club tonight....third shot was a costly miss though.... :shh
-
Jake Aarts produced the best performance of his 24-game senior career with the Tigers in last Friday night’s loss to Brisbane at the Gabba.
Aarts finished the match with an AFL career-high 17 disposals, an AFL career-high eight marks, an equal AFL career-high four inside-50s, an AFL career-high 286 metres, two goals and five score involvements.
The 26-year-old has kicked at least one goal in each of Richmond’s 10 games so far this season, for an overall tally of 15, which places him third on the Club’s goalkicking list behind Jack Riewoldt (25 goals) and Tom Lynch (18 goals).

I thought he was our best small forward.
Better than both Castagna and Rioli put together.

Top hard contested game again :shh
-
Top hard contested game again :shh

-
I think we have underrated this guy.
-
Yep agree Willy, especially when you compare his output to that of George. Top 10 in our b&f if you stopped the count now, quite easily.
-
Haven't been a fan but he has proven his worth through adversity. Something Castagna never learns because he never gets dropped.
-
Incredibly limited skill wise but has gotten the best out of himself. If Dan Butler had his endevour he'd still be running around for us.
poos me to end that our smalls that have a red hot go are the ones with putrid skill level and the one with exceptional talent is the one that picks and chooses when he puts in
-
I feel like this guy's spacial awareness and agility have improved. He's cutting lines very well lately.
Anyway, have always been a fan. He's the guy with the effort that Rioli lacks. Combine them both and you have an A grade player. Currently you have Aarts a B grade all heart bloke and Rioli a C grade, talented but apathetic shadow of his Mia-Fev dating self.
-
First goalless match for the year but arguably his best....still not a fan though.. unlike Rioli, not convinced of his ability to stand up at the business end of the season when the whips are really cracking...... :shh
-
Apart from Dusty, our best one v one in a contest. Refuses to lose contests :clapping
-
Tries hard but his skills and decision making were left wanting a bit tonight. Still our best small forward unfortunately.
-
Sometimes tries to do to much. His tackling was really good last night as was his efforts. Goes in hard.

Carpark naps and granny flats: How Beacy boy hit big time - The remarkable rise of Tiger Jake Aarts
As Richmond’s senior team trained, Jake Aarts would sleep in the Punt Road carpark. But that’s only part of the Tiger rookie remarkable journey to the AFL.
Jake Aarts spent three months living in Aussie Jones’ granny flat on the Bendigo train line before spending his evenings sleeping in the Punt Rd carpark. He found out he would be a dad in the Gold Coast hub. He is a story of dedication and determination ...

Players at your club who have taken their opportunity
Andrew Slevison
SEN
30 June 2021
Richmond - Jake Aarts
Tenacious small forward Jake Aarts had the entire summer to dwell on his misfortune at the end of last season.
The 26-year-old missed Richmond’s third premiership in four years after he was omitted following the Qualifying Final loss to Brisbane and was not recalled for the remainder of the finals series.
Aarts got to work in the off-season in a bid to force his way back into Damien Hardwick’s plans and has been a key contributor since Round 1.
He has played all 14 games and is equal third with Dustin Martin on 16 goals behind Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch. Aarts has had the most tackles inside 50 at the club (17) and is in the top five for score involvements.
His attack around the contest and smarts with the ball are the hallmarks of his game.

Please never again :help.
6 disposals and only one found a teammate (16.7% disposal efficiency) :help.
-
Time for MRJ to take his place or the place of George.
-
Think he might actually be even worse than Cantkickit...#flipacoin. :shh
-
Aarts is the prefect example of what happens when a team isn't playing well or you are an average side
When you are winning his limitations are to a degree hidden. Teams going so well his abilities or lack of aren't in focus because they don't need to be
But when a side starts losing and is playing so badly there is nowhere to hide.
Right now for Aarts there is nowhere to hide.
-
Lost all confidence , was there to play a role but looks lost to me.
Needs a rest in the 2s

Pee off Farts u are flat out no good.

He’s a good complimentary player when things are going well. Like a lot of our players he stinks up horribly when things are bad.
-
21 games this year for a paltry return. Does not have the tools for AFL yet we refuse to do anything about his type.
-
Never again please Dimma :help.
No doubt Jake tries hard but triers don't cut it at AFL level. He is a VFL-standard player given his poor skills. He shouldn't have been in the 22 tonight in the first place either. Poor team selection.
-
Agree, not up to standard
why do the play this bloke over Cumberland has got me baffled
Even Caddy participates and would be a better option
-
He's a friendly Jake King
-
Nice bloke but not AFL standard. Just the truth
-
Have said many times Jake needs to play to his obvious limitations of which there are many
And to make matters worse they gave him mid field time :banghead
Why?
-
Only three games away from 50 and really hoping he doesn't get there.... any less than a dozen injuries to our best 22 and this bloke simply shouldn't be anywhere near the senior side.....:thumbsdown
-
It’s quite amazing that mostly everyone I know don’t think this bloke is AFL standard and that includes most on this forum. He tries but he’s just not up to the level required.
But for some inexplicable reason he just keeps getting selected. :help
-
Have said many times Jake needs to play to his obvious limitations of which there are many

Why?
Jake trained with the midfield group for most of the preseason. So that's why he got midfield time last night.
Having said that it still doesn't make sense to me. So WP, I still ask the same question --- Why? :-\

His place in the side gives me the same feels as when I used to see matt Thomas in the lineup
-
His place in the side gives me the same feels as when I used to see matt Thomas in the lineup
I still think Matt Thomas was much maligned.
Iknow he didnt give much when it came spread he was a bit slowand didnt offer a lot offensively.
But by crickey he was very sevicable on the inside and imo this is just not acknowledged.
he played 15 games for us in 2014 2015 and yeah i know some will say 15 too many but after those 15 games his inside body of work went as the following remember also he only had the 15 games and three were less than half a game.
305 Disposals at 20.3. 83 Tackles at 5.5. 60 clearances at 4.0
Even stacked up against Thomas our younger mids like Ross and Graham have some way to go to match him on the inside.
-
I feel bad for ripping on him now. Just saw an article that his knee was cooked! Like it’s still Richmond’s fault for playing him but Thomas still had a dip on one leg. His disposal sends and being part of scoring chains is still nightmare inducing stuff
-
His place in the side gives me the same feels as when I used to see matt Thomas in the lineup
I actually didn't mind him. Nor Brad Miller. People just have to accept they weren't never meant to be A grade players. Just moneyball role players.
-
They were both very, very ordinary. Ultimately it didn't hurt us playing them given we ended up winning a stack of premierships, but they were list cloggers of the highest order.
-
Jake is back in.
OER to go into meltdown part II in 3 ... 2 ... 1 :whistle
-
Not achieving anything by putting him in. Sonsie or Cumberland should have played instead.
-
Is like the Cow from the movie Me, Myself and Irene
-
Daring to lose and probably will with he & Castagna in.
-
I don't like this in , but credit we're due his performing in the vfl.
-
I don't like this in , but credit we're due his performing in the vfl.
Plenty of others have been performing at VFL for weeks but they don't get a look in
-
I don't like this in , but credit we're due his performing in the vfl.

We're thin in the guts this week need a big body a reason to. Dow had his best game last week , Sonsie also but needs to run out games and get better defence wise , Rcd ?? ,Cumberland a forward.
-
When will you learn Dimma and the MC? It should have been never again once he was dropped last time. Aarts is a state league player. He's not up to AFL.
I'd rather lose playing Sonsie or one of the young kids to give them experience than guys like Aarts who aren't up to it :banghead.

Never again - please!!
-
He had absolutely no right to be attempting over the head goals. He’s not talented enough to do that. Should of retained possession and force another stoppage. That to me is the worst of his misses
-
Disgusted. An absolute stuffing hack
-
NEVER AGAIN
FFS
-
Forget it Dimma picks these blokes its unbelievable. We cpuld have given a game to Banks today instead. Its rubbish match committee
-
What a stupid bloody selection.
-
Pick a player once and he fails = player's fault.
Pick a player again and again and surprise surprise he fails again and again = coach and MC's fault.
-
Are you gonna do the video thing again. Very good.
Don’t forget Nankervis and Grimes first half as they set the tone for the others
-
Don't bother.
I'm done with blaming Aarts. He didn't pick himself.
The real culprits are sitting upstairs.
-
So Aarts came on as a sub for a whole qtr and his first and only stat was his kick after the mark and play on.
As ineffective as any Ive seen. How do you start playing against 22 players who have played 90 minutes of footy and take 27 mins to get a stat.
-
Just another example tonight of Jake not playing to his limitations
Should never have played on. Take the shot, let's be honest none of us would expect him to kick it but at least take responsibility
-
It’s like a revolving door of inadequate players.
Match committee need a swift kick up the behind.
-
Just saw the replay of last minute again.
My god. The play on I can forgive he beat his opponent but should have gone back and kicked it over the mark.
What is worse is the chance to kick the goal as a small forward but decides to kick a 15m pass to top of the square where an easy rushed behind can be punched through. Shocking decision. The curse of Castagna miss haunted him to be the one to miss, says a fair bit of the mentality of where our players are at.
-
Vfl footballer yet got picked again lol.
-
Vfl footballer yet got picked again lol.
Wrong wrong wrong. He is a B grade local league player at best. A trier and committed so you cannot knock his efforts. But he just ain't up to it Damien. Seriously people.
-
Play stupid players get stupid results. :rollin
-
I'm just saying if Maurice Jnr was the sub - he probably would of had the poise to have a set shot .
-

People are awful that's for sure. Wonder if Jack, Grimes, Vlastuin, so on had the same abuse?
-
Gez some people take it to far be critical of him in a respectful manner.
-
Actual abuse to people's socials is disgraceful. Absolutely disgraceful.
I will defend the tiger army and suggest it was a bunch of opposition supporters hanging poo, most likely those who bet on the game and money on Tigers win. Another reason to get rid of gambling in our game.
As much as Jakes decision was costly and frustrated the hell out of me as a supporter that targeted stuff online is just disgusting.
-
lol deja vu again and one and all continue to ask why.
-
Very sad. No doubt the players do feel it.
I felt for George after that last YouTube vid and reached out to say something nice and he actually responded and said thanks.
Some people must think they don't feel it but they certainly do especially the guys who are on the fringe.
-

There’s a great dyl and friends episode where Dylan Buckley and Gorringe reminisce on their bad games and how even though they know better the first thing they do is pick up their phone and check socials and see all the comments hanging poo on them. Buckley said it was really bad to the point he would get super anxious leading into every weekend (even if he was just playing vfl)
I’m happy they can laugh about it now but man the hypocrisy of “rip Frawley, mental health is super important” to going off your clacker and storming someone’s Instagram is disgusting.
-
Social media platforms are rubbish anyway. What’s the point of it?

Jake Aarts has been named in the 40-player VFL Team of the Year squad for 2022 🙌

Aartsy. Heard Collingwood but even Anne was suprised when I mentioned that.

-
Well done to Aarts on getting 42 games with the Tigers. He gave it everything he had. I thought he earned his keep in his first 20 odd games but unfortunately got found out in a few areas in the end. He will always hold the title of No.1 player in any alphabetical list of Richmond players.
-
Diehard Richmond supporter as a kid too I believe so good on him for living out his and our dreams.
-
Yep, wasn't a fan at all but could never question his effort. Came on board by the VFL squad, got a contract with the AFL side and played 40 games at the top level. Got everything out of himself to achieve that. I hope he's very proud of himself because he should be. Did what all of us dreamed of doing as kids
-
Can only echo the thoughts of previous posters. Fair play to the guy and congrats on your Richmond career. Contrast with Stack: 42 games to 35. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
-
Agree with prior sentiments. Hard working battler. All the best mate.
-
Thanks Jake for playing your role, never a star but gave his best for the team
-
Jake Aarts (Richmond)
Jake Aarts has some AFL attributes, namely his toughness around the ball and work ethic.
He could still play a role for a team in need of a pressure small forward with midfield capabilities.
Following a lengthy apprenticeship in the VFL, Aarts played 42 games over three seasons with the Tigers. He showed in 2020, when playing 14 games in an eventual premiership team, that he is more than capable at the level.
His 2021 season when he kicked 18 goals in 21 outings was also an indication of what he can bring to the table.
Could Aarts, who won Richmond’s VFL best and fairest this year, be an experienced player for a rebuilding side like Hawthorn to have up their sleeve in case of emergency?

Jake Aarts (Richmond)
At 27 years of age, Aarts still has plenty to offer as a pressure small forward with goalkicking nous. He was one of those fringe players who just fell out of favour at the wrong time in 2020 en route to the premiership. He was a reliable source for goals as well as score involvements during the 2020 and 2021 seasons before he endured a tougher run in 2022. He’s a weathered VFL performer and could be a good goalsneak for any clubs in need. Essendon has struggled to fill the void (currently) left by Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and they missed out on Toby Bedford this year despite showing interest, so Aarts could be a ready-made inclusion.

-
Just something we got wrong imo. Should never have been drafted imo.
-
I'm ok with him being drafted. And we needed to try another small forward with rioli, castagna and butler all losing potency. He was a tie over until mrj, Cumberland and Bolton hit their straps

Very grateful to of been able to live each moment in these photos. Many highs but also many lows that have taught me so much about myself that I can take into my life and teach my friends & family. @richmond_fc it has been an absolute dream to live out for 8 years at the club and will miss everyone involved that’s helped me along the way. To those who I leant on not only when the times were good but when they were tough (you all know who you are) I love you all very much and thank you for making me the best person I can be to be able to show up every day, play and train with pride I wouldn’t of done it without you lot ❤️❤️
