It was mentioned by a Pies supporter a couple of days ago on SEN that they will only be playing us once again next year.
We haven't played them twice in a H/A season since 2019.
-
Under the weighted fixture rule, teams who finished seventh to 12th double-up against no more than two top-six teams and no more than two bottom-six teams in the following season.
Top-six sides are dealt the toughest draw at the start of the season, limited to no more than one match against that season’s bottom-six sides.
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/weighted-fixture-sets-up-blues-for-shot-at-finals-20220606-p5arer.html
Clubs that have finished 7th over the past 4 years (excluding the short 2020 season) have doubled up against 2x top-6 sides, 2x middle-6 sides and 1x bottom-6 side.
The Giants finished 7th in 2021 and they got:
Top 6: Dogs (2), Bris (5).
Middle 6: Syd (7), Freo (11).
Bottom 6: Carl (13).
Eagles finished 7th in 2020 and they got:
Top 6: StK (5), Coll (6)
Middle 6: Dogs (8 ), Freo (12)
Bottom 6: Adel (18)
Sydney finished 7th in 2018 and they got:
Top 6: Melb (3), GWS (6)
Middle 6: Geel (8 ), Ess (11)
Bottom 6: Carl (18)
----------------------------------
So for us in 2023.
Top 6: Geel, Syd, Coll, Bris, Melb, Freo.
Middle 6: Dogs, Carl, StK, Port, GC.
Bottom 6: Haw, Adel, Ess, GWS, WCE, Norf.
IMO, the AFL will want us playing twice against Geelong and Brisbane from the top 6, Carlton and Port from the middle 6, and Essendon from the bottom 6.
ps. No doubt we'll get Norf at Docklands and the Suns at Metricon again to give them a crowd and $$$ ::).

North Melbourne have submitted an official fixture request to the AFL to retain the Good Friday standalone clash.
Amarfio, who will finish up soon in the top job, said the Kangaroos had also requested four home games in Hobart
They also want home games against major Victorian clubs - Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton - held at Marvel Stadium.

-
Lock in us v Norf at marvel, Suns at metricon & Port in SA. Those are out most common fixtures i'd reckon against non fellow MCG tenants. Throw in Aints at marvel as well
-
Hope we play Geelong twice and knock them off their perch

Fixture sneak peek: Blockbuster, will big clubs be shut out?

One blockbuster looks likely for round 1 next year, but it won’t be the grand final rematch. And two big Victorian clubs could struggle to get a look in.

I can't read the article behind the paywall but if it says what the above is implying then the AFL would be nuts to not have us and Carlton playing round 1 when finally both sides are vying for the top 8 at the same time. It's meant to be our home game too next year and the MCG will be chockers.

Don’t know why bit maybe the angle is for an interstate game to get first dibs - Swans vs Cats even though they are saying this won’t be the case?

Blues want ‘as many blockbusters as possible’ as more Magic Round, opening week details emerge
Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
October 21st, 2022
Carlton has declared its desire to feature in “as many blockbusters as possible” in 2023 – and that could start in game No. 1, with the Blues and Richmond poised to return to the season-opener slot.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan on Thursday hinted the 2023 fixture would likely be released in the first week of December.
The opening match of that fixture will likely see the Blues and Tigers go head-to-head, reports the Herald Sun.
The AFL this year scheduled a Grand Final rematch to open the 2022 season, with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs clashing at the MCG on a Wednesday night, but it appears doubtful Geelong and Sydney would commence next season. Neither club is likely to be keen to play at the MCG or SCG on a Wednesday night, while the Cats will almost certainly prefer to save their two MCG home games per season for blockbuster opponents later in the season.
The Blues-Tigers Round 1 match has been a mainstay of the AFL fixture since 2007, with the two clubs meeting in the opening round In 15 of the past 16 seasons.
Carlton is keen to cash in on its 2022 rise and expected growth in 2023 from a fixture perspective.
The Blues played five Thursday or Friday night encounters in 2022, but club chief executive Brian Cook wants more.
“To be really frank we really want as many blockbusters as possible,” he told the Herald Sun. “We get good crowds, we had the highest average home crowds, that was coming off some pretty poor years, so we are after as many blockbusters as we possibly can get. That is really the key for us.
“We are like every other club, we get our five or six interstate games but even if we got an extra blockbuster we would be very happy with that. It’s in the interests of Carlton and the AFL for that to happen and also the broadcasters.”
In other Round 1 fixture whispers, Hawthorn has reportedly requested to play arch-rival Essendon to help celebrate its 1983 premiership reunion.
While the Blues loom as a big fixture winner, clubs tipped to struggle in 2023 are unlikely to be rewarded with many marquee timeslots for next year.
The league has already declared it has scrapped the rolling fixture strategy, with the first 15 rounds for 2023 to be announced in December before unveiling Rounds 16-22 midway through next season. The return of locking in the majority of the fixture early means the AFL will be less likely to schedule underperforming clubs in timeslots with high viewership.
Meanwhile, the possibility of a 2023 ‘Magic Round’ – where the 18 clubs would travel to one state to play all nine games – is gathering significant momentum.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said a call on whether a Magic Round will be held next year would have to be made “in the next week or so”.
“It’s something we have been looking at. It went to the Commission on Tuesday,” McLachlan told reporters on Thursday.
“I think there is good momentum, but we’ve got a few issues to solve for the Commission.”
South Australia remains keen to host the extravaganza, but Sydney would be well placed given both the SCG and Giants Stadium would be used, while Accor Stadium would be another possibility.
Should the event be ticked off by the AFL Commission next week, the round would be on top of the 22 games clubs already play, so it would likely replace one of the official pre-season rounds.
It’s understood clubs and players are generally supportive of the idea, with both parties set to receive a cash splurge. The Herald Sun reported clubs had been told they’d each receive a $500,000 windfall from Magic Round – with $200,000 of that money able to be spent on extra football department spending – while the AFL’s players would also be given $200,000 extra per club by the league.

"Magic Round" will be Round 5 next year.
18 teams, one state: AFL confirms details of extra round in 2023
By Martin Smith
afl.com.au
11 November 2022
ALL 18 teams will head to South Australia for round five of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season for a four-day festival of footy.
The AFL confirmed on Friday that all nine matches of the round will be played in SA from Thursday, April 13 to Sunday, April 16, which coincides with the school holidays.
Exact timings, match-ups and venues will be officially announced at a later date, but AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said the weekend would likely involve six matches at Adelaide Oval; one each on the Thursday and Friday nights before double-headers on the Saturday and Sunday.
He said the remaining three games will be played at suburban grounds and "potentially a regional venue". The Barossa Valley has been canvassed as a possibility by the South Australian government.
Entry to competing club matches will be free for all club and AFL members with tickets to be on sale once the full 2023 fixture is announced in the coming weeks.

The 5,000-capacity Centennial Park Oval, about an hour's drive north-east of the Adelaide CBD, is currently the biggest available sporting ground in the Barossa region and could host at least one match.
Other rural venues that could be considered include Whyalla's Bennett Oval on the Eyre Peninsula, around four hours north of Adelaide, with the 8,000-capacity stadium having hosted an AFL pre-season game in 2020.
Strathalbyn Oval and Port Pirie's Memorial Oval, capable of hosting crowds of 8,000 and 7,500 people respectively, have also hosted pre-season contests over the past five seasons and could be considered viable for AFL games.
Local SANFL stadiums including Central District's Elizabeth Oval (18,000), Norwood Oval (15,000), North Adelaide's Prospect Oval (15,000), Glenelg Oval (14,000) and Woodville Oval (11,000) will also be in the mix for AFL action.
South Adelaide's home, Flinders University Stadium, can hold a capacity crowd of 10,000 people.
The Crows have hosted the majority of their AFLW games this season at the home of SANFL side Sturt, Unley Oval, which holds a capacity crowd of 10,000.
Port Adelaide's traditional home, Alberton Oval, is capable of holding 11,000 people.

Well at least they've got the above part right with it being free for members
But I still won't going out of principle (some would say stubbornness ;D)
Can see all the airlines and hotels cashing in and charging ridiculous prices which will mean so many won't be able to afford to go

Assuming these are the teams we double up on and also the pear is port Adelaide (?) then that is a tough draw. Swans, lions, dockers all top 8 sides, swans/dockers being young sides should naturally improve with more games/experience and lions have loaded up in the off season. Port are a much better team then where they finished last season just couldn’t get over that horrendous start and have also loaded up in the off-season. Suns have top end talent to burn and every season get talked up as finally pushing for finals and let’s not even mention our seemingly unmatched ability to choke against them.
Given we finished in the ‘middle 6’ bracket of the ladder, I’m not sure it could get much tougher than that.

Tickets go on-sale Monday December 12 via Ticketek. AFL and Club access members have access to a priority redemption period from 12pm - 4pm (ACDT) / 12.30pm - 4.30pm (AEDT) before tickets go on sale to the general public at 5pm (ACDT) / 5.30pm (AEDT).
To redeem your free ticket, you must enter your individual 12-character voucher code detailed below. Your membership barcode will not unlock this additional benefit for Gather Round...A Festival of Footy.
With high demand expected, members are kindly asked to only redeem tickets if they plan to attend, this is out of fairness to other members.
This voucher code can alternatively be used to redeem a discounted Adelaide Oval multi-day pass to watch our match and others at the venue across the round. The member discounted price accounts for the free ticket to watch us play.
PLEASE NOTE: The ticketing buy link will be communicated to you the morning of the on-sale (Monday December 12).
Your voucher code is: redacted
One ticket OR multi-day pass can be redeemed per voucher code up to the transaction limit of 10 tickets/passes. To redeem multiple tickets or passes as a group with other members, you will need their voucher code.
Additional tickets will not be available for purchase during the member priority redemption period.
Tickets for Adelaide Oval matches will be issued as reserved seats or in the event you select ‘The Hill’, these will be general admission.
The voucher code is valid both in the member priority redemption window and in the general public on-sale, with tickets subject to availability.

6 games on the Adelaide Oval in 4 days! Better not hope it rains. Glad we're playing second on it and not last when it may be chopped up.
ps. Wasn't the point of this "gather round" to play a couple of games outside of Adelaide such as in the Barossa?

We always seem to play in the same teams in the same order every year
-
So, for the third time in 4 seasons we only play the other Big 4 clubs once and two of those are away games :thumbsdown.
Still a joke we have to play a home game at Marvel. Makes no sense either when Carlton get to play the Suns at the 'G.
Apart from that, if we're good enough and don't throw away games late like this year, it's a decent draw.
Play twice.

Carlton leads the competition with the most Thursday-Friday slots, but Brisbane's push up the pecking order should be no surprise as the premiership contenders are one of the most attractive teams to watch, finishing in the top three for scoring in each of the past four seasons.
The Blues have seven games in the prime slots, cashing in on a much-improved 2022, starting with its regular season-opener against Richmond in round one, followed by hosting premier Geelong at the MCG to open round two.
The Cats have five Thursday or Friday night games, while Richmond, Melbourne, Sydney and Port Adelaide have four apiece.
Powerhouses Essendon and Hawthorn, along with Greater Western Sydney are the only clubs without a prime timeslot in the first 15 rounds.

DON'T MISS 'EM: The must-watch games of 2023
afl.com.au
10 December 2022
Carlton v Richmond in the season-opener
Could the Blues do it again? The Michael Voss era kicked off with a bang last season when Carlton managed to get the chocolates against Richmond in their opening-round fixture – the first time the Blues had claimed a round one win over the Tigers since 2012. Next season's round one bout will see the Tigers’ boom recruits – Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto – unveiled, with the former GWS duo's arrival adding extra intrigue to the season-opener.
Dreamtime at the 'G
The annual Dreamtime at the 'G match will again be one of the highlights of Sir Doug Nicholls Round. Richmond has dominated Essendon in the annual clash, winning the past eight editions, while the Tigers have also won the previous 13 meetings between the clubs. The Bombers have a point to prove under a new coach – and after a tumultuous off-season – while Richmond is chasing another flag.
Taranto and Hopper face the old foe
Richmond landed itself two of GWS's top-shelf players in the off-season, and it's set to be a fascinating encounter with Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto are pitted against their former teammates in round 12. While the Giants weren't overly active themselves in the trade period, they did bring in a bevy of talent in this year's NAB AFL Draft to offset their star departures. It's just another chapter in the coloured, albeit short, history of these two sides, which includes Richmond's 2019 Grand Final mauling of the Giants.

I have no issue with the travel TBH
What I have an issue with is it is still a floating fixture
9 rounds are floating
Of those 9 rounds we have 3 interstate trips. For those of us who like going interstate we cannot plan anything.
We can't book flights, accommodation or apply for leave
Just another great example of the AFL’S total lack of respect; actually let's call it what it is total disdain for fans.

We travel as much as the sides like the Bulldogs (who have 6 interstate games) and the Dees who sell games to play away.
Even the Hawks and Roos - if you remove their Tassie games - only have 5 and 4 genuine interstate games.
We should be capped at 6 interstate games and to balance the draw those extra games should be given to the Hawks, Doggies, Norf and the Dees who sell their soul to play away. It’s another “soft bias” that undermines the bigger clubs who don’t need to drop their metaphorical pants by selling home games and get an underlying hit by being “equalised” with more travel to balance the draw.

Who has the hardest draw? We break down your club's 2023 fixture
afl.com.au
11 December 2022
The degree of difficulty is calculated by adding the 2022 ladder positions of the teams a club plays twice. A low total score means a club has a tougher fixture; a high total score means an easier fixture.

3. Sydney 47
4. Port Adelaide 48
5. Brisbane 50
6. Melbourne 53

I'm just saying this is nothing new and we've succeeded in our premiership years in spite of it.
Blame the interstate clubs that request us as a "rival" and who want the Tiger Army to fill their home grounds.
Port - once again we play them over there. That's 12 years in a row. Ever since the 2014 EF and reinforced by the 2020 PF, they request a home game against us.
Port home games 25 ... (Adel Oval 10, Footy Park 15). Next year will be number 26.
Rich MCG games 7 .... (next year will be only the 8th time we've played Port at the 'G in their 27 years in the AFL).
Rich Docklands 4
So we've only had 11 'home' games to Port's 25.
Brisbane is similar. They see us as a "rival" based on 2019 & 2020 QF and Tiger supporters fill the Gabba.
Bris home games 19 .... next year will be number 20 at the Gabba.
Rich MCG games 11
Rich Docklands 5
And it goes on.
Adelaide - 2017 GF = "rival". Just 5 times we've played them at the 'G over the past 20 years & one of those was the GF.
GWS - 2017 PF & 2019 GF = "rival".
Freo - close past games in Perth plus last year's draw at Docklands = "rival".
As pmac said, we play the same teams again in pretty much the same order. Next year's fixture is nothing new or different for us IMHV.

Agree 100% They don't realise the rest of us don't get paid to attend games & some of us need to apply for time off work just to attend 1 game. Media also have 0 idea what this is like.

TBH The Club really should be happy with this arrangement as none of these games would get a massive crowd at the 'G. Hence we (aside from next yr surprisingly) we tend to play GC & GWS "away" each yr as well. it's frustrating as all we hear from Interstate Clubs & fans is #VicBias but there's a reason for it.

28 minute wait so far to get tickets to the Gather Round via ticketek website. What a joke
-
And you can't buy additional seats so if you need to go with other non members you will need to wait until 5pm.

Draw difficulty
The top finishing team from the 2022 season (Geelong) is assigned 18 points. Moving down the table, each team is then assigned one less point with the team that finished last worth 1 point.
Each teams matchups for the season are then combined, with the opponents points tallied. The tally shows which team has the most difficult draw based on how well teams performed last year.

Round 1 vs Carlton – Opening night rivalry
A much-anticipated staple of the AFL calendar, Richmond will take on Carlton in yet another Round 1 Thursday night blockbuster, and it will be a cracker once again.
In previous years Richmond has dominated this fixture, however, Carlton came to play last year, defeating the Tigers by 25 points to claim its first Round 1 win since 2012. The Tigers got their revenge by defeating the Blues in Round 14, but this one is sure to be hotly contested.
With both teams expected to be strong outfits in 2023, it could definitely go either way once again.
Round 9 vs Geelong – Battle of the cats
Richmond and Geelong always put on a show, and Round 9 will be no exception. With the Tigers having dropped off slightly in recent years, they haven’t been able to defeat the Cats since their 2020 Grand Final win over the side.
But as the Tigers look to climb back up the ladder in 2023, and with the dominance that the Cats have displayed in the past year, it will be a great test to see where the Tigers stand after a couple of volatile seasons.
Round 10 vs Essendon – Dreamtime at the ‘G
Dreamtime at the ‘G is always a landmark fixture, and the 2023 edition will be no different. A celebration of Indigenous culture taking place during the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the yearly blockbuster between the Tigers and Bombers draws in huge crowds at the MCG each year.
Despite the fact that Richmond has had the better side on paper for many years now, it will still be a momentous occasion as always, with an upset always on the cards.
It is a date that should be marked in every AFL fan’s calendar.
Round 16 vs Brisbane – Out for revenge against the Lions
After defeating them in an intense affair late in the season and entering finals with plenty of momentum after a string of massive victories, the Tigers would be gutted with the two-point loss they suffered in their elimination-final matchup against the Brisbane Lions.
The two sides have played in some huge games over the last couple of years, and with both expected to be competitive again in 2023, their Round 16 clash is sure to be another big one. Not to mention, the result could have a huge effect on how each team’s road to the finals will end up panning out.

From SEN:
Richmond is often accused of getting a cushy draw with the most ‘home’ games.
Geelong also get a dream fixture, apparently, with two ‘home’ grounds.
There is also the case that some interstate teams don’t share their home ground, giving them an advantage.
But it is never going to be even, such is the nature of having 18 clubs in different states made up mostly of teams from Melbourne.
In a bid to put some of these myths to bed (or prove them right), we’ve crunched the numbers to give a clearer view of who plays where the most (and the least) in season 2023.

Of course, we play more games at the MCG than any other club other than the co-tenants of the MCG! Really, we should be playing more games there too but we do not have double up games against the other big 4 clubs this year for some unknown reason. It sh.tes me that this is seen somehow as a distinct advantage over the rest of the competition yet every other club wants to play us to help their own coffers and the Victorian clubs want to play us where they can get the biggest crowd. Where would that be by chance.... The MCG?!.

So true. We play 23 matches next season with 12 of those being ‘home’ games. We lose 2 of those due to the marvel stadium contract and another due to the gather round. That leaves us with 10 home games at the MCG. Then we play 3 ‘away’ games at the MCG, 2 of those being against MCG tenants in Collingwood and Melbourne and the other being against Essendon who are technically a marvel side although they’re pretty much 50-50 with the MCG. So at most we are getting 1 extra game at the G but good luck telling the bombers our Dreamtime game has to be at marvel…..
-
The stupid thing is they think we have a "home ground advantage" when we play Pies/Hawks/Dees at the 'G when they are mutual games as we share the same "home" ground with them.
-
I notice Melbourne play all( except 1) their home at the MCG, discrimination likely

St Kilda, Essendon and Richmond have the most favourable fixtures ahead as the gap continues to widen between the AFL’s best and worst sides this year.
An analysis of club fixtures shows that the Saints, Tigers and Collingwood are yet to play games against any of the competition’s three most struggling sides — Hawthorn, West Coast and North Melbourne.
St Kilda has five games to come against the three clear wooden spoon favourites, while Richmond has four.
...
On the back of five straight losses, Richmond is one of the rival sides looking to cash in next.
The Tigers face West Coast at the MCG on Saturday, hopeful of turning their season around but conscious any game can turn into a banana peel.
“Any AFL side is dangerous,” Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said of the match up against the Eagles.
“Any side on their day is capable of winning and they’re probably a little bit like us. They’ve got some soldiers down, but the fact of the matter is we both need a win. We’re no different.
“We’ve got to make sure that we play our very best.”

SAM LANDSBERGER’S PREDICTED ROUND 24 FIXTURE
Friday, August 25
Brisbane Lions vs St Kilda, 7.50pm (G)
Saturday, August 26
North Melbourne vs Gold Coast, 1.45pm (BA)
Hawthorn vs Fremantle, 2.10pm (MCG)
Sydney vs Melbourne, 4.35pm (SCG)
Geelong vs Western Bulldogs, 7.25pm (GMHBA)
West Coast vs Adelaide, 7.40pm (OS)
Sunday, August 27
Carlton vs GWS Giants, 1.10pm (Marvel)
Essendon vs Collingwood, 3.20pm (MCG)
Port Adelaide vs Richmond, 4.40pm (AO)
(All times EST)
* Note: The AFL is not due to complete the Round 24 fixture for another three weeks, which could alter the appeal of some matches
The league’s overlay for the last round is to tell a narrative. The AFL wants to start strongly with a belter of a Friday night – which is the aim every week – but then drag the final round right out so that the last two games have relevance.
Recently it has been a big tick, with the composition of the top eight coming down to the last quarter of that last game.
Richmond might have to topple Port Adelaide away in the final round to make the finals.
For that reason a Sunday twilight clash of Lions-Saints or Power-Tigers would make more sense, as opposed to a likely dead-rubber game such as Hawthorn-Fremantle or North Melbourne-Gold Coast.
The AFL’s biggest fear is the top eight being sorted by Saturday night, leaving a day of dead Sunday football to close the season.
