AFL Magic Round: South Australia to be announced as location for 2023 round

The AFL will confirm South Australia as the host of the inaugural “Magic Round” in Adelaide on Friday.

League chief executive Gillon McLachlan will make the announcement in his home state, which has beaten New South Wales for the event in 2023.

Clubs getting $500K each and each team’s players get $200K so at a minimum the SA government stumping up $13 million in payments. Brings more cash into the industry and helps expand the footy soft cap. Players are strongly on board.

"Magic Round" will be Round 5 next year.

18 teams, one state: AFL confirms details of extra round in 2023

ALL 18 teams will head to South Australia for round five of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season for a four-day festival of footy.

The AFL confirmed on Friday that all nine matches of the round will be played in SA from Thursday, April 13 to Sunday, April 16, which coincides with the school holidays.

Exact timings, match-ups and venues will be officially announced at a later date, but AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said the weekend would likely involve six matches at Adelaide Oval; one each on the Thursday and Friday nights before double-headers on the Saturday and Sunday.

He said the remaining three games will be played at suburban grounds and "potentially a regional venue". The Barossa Valley has been canvassed as a possibility by the South Australian government.

Entry to competing club matches will be free for all club and AFL members with tickets to be on sale once the full 2023 fixture is announced in the coming weeks.

The 5,000-capacity Centennial Park Oval, about an hour's drive north-east of the Adelaide CBD, is currently the biggest available sporting ground in the Barossa region and could host at least one match.

Other rural venues that could be considered include Whyalla's Bennett Oval on the Eyre Peninsula, around four hours north of Adelaide, with the 8,000-capacity stadium having hosted an AFL pre-season game in 2020.

Strathalbyn Oval and Port Pirie's Memorial Oval, capable of hosting crowds of 8,000 and 7,500 people respectively, have also hosted pre-season contests over the past five seasons and could be considered viable for AFL games.

Local SANFL stadiums including Central District's Elizabeth Oval (18,000), Norwood Oval (15,000), North Adelaide's Prospect Oval (15,000), Glenelg Oval (14,000) and Woodville Oval (11,000) will also be in the mix for AFL action.

South Adelaide's home, Flinders University Stadium, can hold a capacity crowd of 10,000 people.

The Crows have hosted the majority of their AFLW games this season at the home of SANFL side Sturt, Unley Oval, which holds a capacity crowd of 10,000.

Port Adelaide's traditional home, Alberton Oval, is capable of holding 11,000 people.

Well at least they've got the above part right with it being free for members

But I still won't going out of principle (some would say stubbornness  ;D)

Can see all the airlines and hotels cashing in and charging ridiculous prices which will mean so many won't be able to afford to go

The AFL fixture will not be released in full until December. The league will not have floating fixture for the first 15 rounds of next year, having reacted to the wishes and complaints of fans.

Premier's armchair ride to 2023 finals...

They might have won the flag, but Geelong is about to get a back-ended schedule of home games at its redeveloped Cattery fortress.

St Kilda is lobbying the AFL for a blockbuster home game at the MCG in round three to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary.

The Age reports St Kilda is hoping to face off against a heavyweight Victorian club at the venue.

We have a habit of losing to them for whatever reason. Even in our premiership years.

Be good to play them at the 'G for a change, it's a rare occasion. If they are willing to host us there then even better.

I'd say the Sorry Saints first preference would be the Pies. You know the team they beat to win their only flag in their 150 year history
