2023 Fixture

So, for the third time in 4 seasons we only play the other Big 4 clubs once and two of those are away games .

Still a joke we have to play a home game at Marvel. Makes no sense either when Carlton get to play the Suns at the 'G.

Apart from that, if we're good enough and don't throw away games late like this year, it's a decent draw.

Play twice.
1st-6th:  Swans, Melb
7th-12th:  Dogs, Port, Saints
13th-18th: Eagles

It’s a heap of travel MT.

It's only one more interstate trip than what we usually have. It wouldn't surprise me if a vet or two like Cotch is rested for one of games when we have back-to-back interstate trips.

We travel as much as the sides like the Bulldogs (who have 6 interstate games) and the Dees who sell games to play away.
Even the Hawks and Roos - if you remove their Tassie games - only have 5 and 4 genuine interstate games.
We should be capped at 6 interstate games and to balance the draw those extra games should be given to the Hawks, Doggies, Norf and the Dees who sell their soul to play away. It’s another “soft bias” that undermines the bigger clubs who don’t need to drop their metaphorical pants by selling home games and get an underlying hit by being “equalised” with more travel to balance the draw.

I'm just saying this is nothing new and we've succeeded in our premiership years in spite of it.

Blame the interstate clubs that request us as a "rival" and who want the Tiger Army to fill their home grounds.


Port - once again we play them over there. That's 12 years in a row. Ever since the 2014 EF and reinforced by the 2020 PF, they request a home game against us.

Port home games  25 ... (Adel Oval 10, Footy Park 15). Next year will be number 26.

Rich MCG  games   7  .... (next year will be only the 8th time we've played Port at the 'G in their 27 years in the AFL).

So we've only had 11 'home' games to Port's 25.


Brisbane is similar. They see us as a "rival" based on 2019 & 2020 QF and Tiger supporters fill the Gabba.

As pmac said, we play the same teams again in pretty much the same order. Next year's fixture is nothing new or different for us IMHV.

I have no issue with the travel TBH

What I have an issue with is it is still a floating fixture

9 rounds are floating

Of those 9 rounds we have 3 interstate trips. For those of us who like going interstate we cannot plan anything. 

We can't book flights, accommodation or apply for leave

Just another great example of the AFL’S total lack of respect; actually let's call it what it is total disdain for fans.

Agree 100% They don't realise the rest of us don't get paid to attend games & some of us need to apply for time off work just to attend 1 game. Media also have 0 idea what this is like.

TBH The Club really should be happy with this arrangement as none of these games would get a massive crowd at the 'G. Hence we (aside from next yr surprisingly) we tend to play GC & GWS "away" each yr as well. it's frustrating as all we hear from Interstate Clubs & fans is #VicBias but there's a reason for it.

Draw difficulty

The top finishing team from the 2022 season (Geelong) is assigned 18 points. Moving down the table, each team is then assigned one less point with the team that finished last worth 1 point.

Each teams matchups for the season are then combined, with the opponents points tallied. The tally shows which team has the most difficult draw based on how well teams performed last year.

Round 1 vs Carlton – Opening night rivalry

A much-anticipated staple of the AFL calendar, Richmond will take on Carlton in yet another Round 1 Thursday night blockbuster, and it will be a cracker once again.

In previous years Richmond has dominated this fixture, however, Carlton came to play last year, defeating the Tigers by 25 points to claim its first Round 1 win since 2012. The Tigers got their revenge by defeating the Blues in Round 14, but this one is sure to be hotly contested.

With both teams expected to be strong outfits in 2023, it could definitely go either way once again.

Round 9 vs Geelong – Battle of the cats

Richmond and Geelong always put on a show, and Round 9 will be no exception. With the Tigers having dropped off slightly in recent years, they haven’t been able to defeat the Cats since their 2020 Grand Final win over the side.

But as the Tigers look to climb back up the ladder in 2023, and with the dominance that the Cats have displayed in the past year, it will be a great test to see where the Tigers stand after a couple of volatile seasons.

Round 10 vs Essendon – Dreamtime at the ‘G

Dreamtime at the ‘G is always a landmark fixture, and the 2023 edition will be no different. A celebration of Indigenous culture taking place during the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the yearly blockbuster between the Tigers and Bombers draws in huge crowds at the MCG each year.

Despite the fact that Richmond has had the better side on paper for many years now, it will still be a momentous occasion as always, with an upset always on the cards.

It is a date that should be marked in every AFL fan’s calendar.

Round 16 vs Brisbane – Out for revenge against the Lions

After defeating them in an intense affair late in the season and entering finals with plenty of momentum after a string of massive victories, the Tigers would be gutted with the two-point loss they suffered in their elimination-final matchup against the Brisbane Lions.

The two sides have played in some huge games over the last couple of years, and with both expected to be competitive again in 2023, their Round 16 clash is sure to be another big one. Not to mention, the result could have a huge effect on how each team’s road to the finals will end up panning out.

Richmond is often accused of getting a cushy draw with the most ‘home’ games.

Geelong also get a dream fixture, apparently, with two ‘home’ grounds.

There is also the case that some interstate teams don’t share their home ground, giving them an advantage.

But it is never going to be even, such is the nature of having 18 clubs in different states made up mostly of teams from Melbourne.

Of course, we play more games at the MCG than any other club other than the co-tenants of the MCG! Really, we should be playing more games there too but we do not have double up games against the other big 4 clubs this year for some unknown reason. It sh.tes me that this is seen somehow as a distinct advantage over the rest of the competition yet every other club wants to play us to help their own coffers and the Victorian clubs want to play us where they can get the biggest crowd. Where would that be by chance.... The MCG?!.
