According to SEN, Knighter's name keeps being bantered about for the Essendon gig. The Bombers rate him highly.
-
Seriously?? I mean I love Knighter but I dont think he's anywhere near ready for an AFL gig. :-\
-
Sounds like their plan if Bomber Thompson stays with Geelong. Maybe they are thinking they had so much success with a former Richmond captain we'll replace him with another one lol.
-
Is he any good??
Did he support the bombers as a kid too??
-

I'm not having a go at you here tigersalive; but how do you know that?

EDIT: And I dont "know" it, its simply my opinion of where he has been so far. :thumbsup
He's only coached VFL and another country team I think(?).
Neither went crash hot, of course that is not always the coaches fault.
But I am of the thinking mostly to be a successful AFL coach you need to be an assistant first to get acclimatised so in that aspect I dont think he is ready and would need to be an assisstant first.
I'd love to see him prove me wrong though. :thumbsup

I'd love to see him prove me wrong though. :thumbsup
Not at the Bombres surely
-
Didn't Knights coach a SANFL club before coaching a VFL side for a few seasons
If his name is comming up then he has the credentials to coach any AFL side
He was a very good leader lMO he could be a good choice
best of luck to him if he does get the gig :clapping

Port Adelaide Magpies (2004) 20 Games, 7 Wins, 13 Loses,
Port Magpies thought Knighter was a bit of a dud as coach and sacked him but Essendon apparently do rate him highly based on his work at Bendigo. Making the VFL finals has probably pushed Knighter's name forward but he hasn't had an assistant coaching role where most senior AFL coaches now come from.
-
With Andy Collins heading off to West Adelaide, would anyone like to see Matty Knights return and become Coburg coach if he misses out on the Essendon senior coaching gig?

Definately. Would love to see he and Bondy back at Richmond.
GO TIGES!!!
-
Better us than the Bummers.
-
Sir Matty Knight to coach Coburg next year. If so bring on 2008. So bring him back.
It would be great to have a real champion back, who should never have left in the first place, about the place again.
Plus it would give Browny someone to get real captancy advice from. :gotigers
-
Everytime I think of Knighter as a coach I think of him being too restrictive on the players. Would Jack and Connors turn into emotionless players by instruction???
RE: Ezra Poyas.
-
oh for gods sake give me a break.
What exactly has knights done to earn the coburg job.
He failed at port adelaide and got sacked, and now he has failed at bendigo.
We need a winner, and knighter isnt one, and never has been, and never will be.

Blaisee, wash your mouth out with soap young man! :wallywink
-
why would Collins go to West Adelaide for ???
must have veen offered better money !!!
sad to see Collins go ... hopefully we win the Premiership on sunday !!!
of course ... love to have Matthew Knights back at Richmond somewhat !!!
Matthew Knights is a champion ... in our Team of the Century ... hardly any team success when he was playing !!!

AMEN! :clapping Some common sense behind the "ooo lets get a champion back."
Chris Bond is a winner but past VFL coaching now which is a pity. I dont have faith in Knights.
-
Has Collins gone 100%?
Would be very disappointing.
After his efforts this year he should be offered Royal's position.

Agree - Collo deserves an AFL gig at Richmond with direct responsibility to Craig McRae for player development.
This is the deal that Richmond should make happen rather than chase Judd.

You've got me there! Darth Tiger
Too valuable to let go IMO
could be our next senior coach in waiting
-
Knighter is still in the running for the Essendon job:
Knights, who coached the Bendigo Bombers this year and impressed insiders with his development work.

In breaking news, SEN saying Knighter will be announced as Essendon coach later this arvo
-
According to SEN, Knights has the job!
-
The Bombers sticking to what they know - a Tiger coaching them. You've got to wonder whether the Judd shanannagins has forced the Dons hand to secure a coach quickly.
-
oh dear
loved knighter as a player, loved him.
DOnt think he has the appropriate coaching credentials however
I think Essendon must have realised that they are rooted!
-
Many Bomber fans aren't happy on SEN.
-
Knighters appointment confirmed.

Good luck, Mattie, but I don't think he'll last 18 months.
The state that club has been left, it's clear he will be a scapegoat for it and the great white dud Hird will do an apprenticeship and take over after Mattie gets crucified.
And Roger, I think Mattie barracked for the Hawks as a kid!
-
I never thought that i'd see a Richmond player from the past 25 years ever be a senior coach.

iirc, matty was always a tiger fan, coming from merbein and playing up in mildura, im certain he was a tiger fan, but i could be wrong
anyway, i feel sorry 4 knighter, he is walking the plank. the bombers were too scared to appoint one of their own cos they know they are stuffed and will now pass the blame on knighter when all will fail
oh well, knighter is the enemy now, wish him and the bombers no luck and hope the bombers become the new rfc, where they will have 25 yrs of misery and board wars
-
Bomber fans were/are going ape over the decision. Some haven't forgiven Matty for the 95 SF.

And being not an "Essendon-man" it'll be so easy for them to make him the scapegoat when it's their board who has stuffed this all up. They sacked Sheedy in a rush to only appoint their "reserves" coach 8 weeks later! Talk about Matty being given a poison chalice.

Can tell you that Matty will be a terrific coach.
All you know it alls on here bagged me for for suggesting that Matty would coach the Tiges one day ? Guess what, the tiges have missed out again.
Matty is a terrifc bloke with a football brain who has great respect by footy people, :thumbsup

Matty is a great bloke but he hardly has a coaching record to write home about. Port Magpies were glad to get rid of him and his Bendigo Bombers haven't done anything. If he was the best candidate they wanted then the Bombers wouldn't have chased and waited for Bomber Thompson.
-
Good luck to Matty Knights even though he is with the enemy now.
I just feel he has been thrown in the deep end as those who Essendon
preferred to actually coach them were eliminated eventually (Williams and Bomber).
This appointment is much in the same vein as us in 1999 when Geishen left
and one by one the candidates went to other clubs as we were waiting for
Sheeds to come home. We then picked up Spud as he seemed to be the only
candidate left as those with more credentialls went
Thompson- Geelong
Schwab- Hawthorn :lol
Ayres - Adelaide
Collingwood - Malthouse
West Coast - Judge :lol :scream :lol :scream :lol :scream :lol :scream
Anyway I think he has big shoes to feel in both the name and the era that Sheeds presided over and the most pleasing thing for me will be this if it occurs. After watching a tiger lead Essendon to on field success for the best part of 20 years
I'll be watching another tiger continuing on Sheeds legacy over the last 4 seasons of his tenure and watching the Bombers systematically categorically failing both on and off the field.

But does that make him a good coach ?
Would never wish any ill towards Knighter, but really couldn't give a flying now.
He has a huge job ahead of him and will need to be a damn good coach to get the bummers anywhere in the next 3 years.
We will see, I spose all knowing one - :rollin
-
Hey, that wouldnt have appointed him if he didnt have it.
He has it.
Essendon have the utmost respect for him.
-
Well done Mathew - unfortunately a lot of dons supporters I guess don't approve of his appointment. I guess that may make hin a marked man from the start. I guess they don't know what a champion he was with us - I guess they weren't around when Spud shafted him and he carried himself so well.
I guess he must have interviewed well.
I just hope he stops saying " I guess" every two minutes.
-
Hutchy via Lyon said that Hardwick had the job to lose on Monday. Knighter won Essendon over with his presentation yesterday. Knighter believing the Bombers were closer to finals than what Hardwick did. Hird said Knighter is well respected within the walls at Essendon.
-
Hmmm.....obviously doesn't pay to be a realist. Just tell them what they want to hear.
-

Knowing the list being in disrepair perhaps Hardwick did the smart thing and did not want to take the job thus leaving Knighter in the unenviable position which he gleefully has accepted.
Despite Matty being a legend of our club and a great guy he is no senior coach.
It will be a long long haul for the Bombers
We will make the 8 before Essendon does.
-
Hardwick would have seen the Hawks demolish Essendon first hand exposing their lack of run on big grounds. Even we flogged them. Matty's got a massive job ahead of him. He won't have Hird to pull them over the line at the Dome and he's going to have to rebuild the Bombers key defensive posts with Michael and Fletcher in what must be their last year.

l hope you do very well your the man for the job
remember Richmond shafted you not the other way round they should have honored you 300 games
best wishes in your career :clapping :clapping :clapping

The way Knighter's exit was handled was poor and he shouldn't have been told it was over before the end of the season and before others on the list who should have gone first. However Matty's time was up. He had been on the decline after 98. Sad we were crap except for the last one during his peak years 90-95.

Good luck to Matthew. :)
Don't give a rats how Essendon goes but I hope he goes ok.
-
remember Richmond shafted you not the other way round they should have honored you 300 games
In the end he could hardly walk after one of his runs, couldn't kick further than about 30m and couldn't chase his opponent to apply any defensive pressure.
I actually found it quite sad watching him hobble around in his last few games and thinking what a great player he used to be.
If you were arguing about him losing the captaincy I'd be with you. Nursing him to 300 games though - no!
-
hope he falls flat on his rodent face.

but I think he will fail at bomberland. The bomber hierarchy are stuffed.
I reckon Hardwick would be a good get actually lets keep him i9n mind. what do you think blaisee.
-
good luck Knighter
One of my all time fav players.
Fondest memory of him was meeting him for the first time in person down at Northland when he and Wayne Campbell were signing autographs for fans :thumbsup

Thats right he could hardly run so why play someone like that injured
why not rest him the year out & over the summer then let him have 1 more good season & produce something to the club & retire year end without all the media crap of him being pushed out the door having the captaincy ripped off him instead of destroying his career playing a injured player like that a coach should be sacked, a doctor should be held for it the club itself what was it thinking
The Captaincy ?? gee where would l start there reguardless of who l am, Knights should have remained captain till his career was over then Richmond should have picked the next captain be it Wayne or anyone else it destroyed the moral at the club & it was not something the club needed at that time & we turned to pooh again
Knights had a Judd type injury but the coaches down at Richmond would play a name player 40% fit before playing a young player who would give 100% effort & a chance to show what another player could offer the club
Its been happening down at Richmond for as long as l can remember & a player should be honest in saying when he is injured & unable to give 100% effort & the club should effing wake up but it still has not learned anything Terry Wallace is just as stupid
l effing tired of hearing excuses from coaches oh Johnson had broken hand, Richo had broken jaw, Tuck been injured, Krakouer knee probs, Deledio injured, Tambling injured but they can all play cause there important to the club in name. eff whatever happened to moral of having 100% fit team with players who can give 100% effort & l can go on & on but who is responsible its the coach who media dribble effing riles me
The team gets smashed by the biggest losing margin in history & wins another wooden spoon well eff the wooden spoon its the worst thing on earth
no wonder Shultz cant produce down there cause he aint given the right directions from the start it like just wait your turn When Richo is finished you can have a go then thats the attitude at Richmond when Johnson use by date is up we try someone new why eff push Johno out make him earn his spot cause he aint giving directions to players & he aint doing his job on the field eff force him out the door Knights was 10 times better rounding up a poohty Tiger side cause the team we got on paper is good just it aint be coached the right way
Hughes, White, JoHkeley, Rewoldt, Meyer, all going backwards cause the message is these name players are better than you 60% fit but never produce
King 100% tough 100% fit smallest man can produce skills, fitness, speed, take a hit because he is 100% fit & goes out to give his all
But we have spoke of this over the years we are going backwards again here thinking of what could have been
My AFL membership next year will let me watch any game l want next year cause Richmond aint worthy of my money anymore after this wooden spoon how effing embarrassing is that too have 2 in 4 years the worst results in the 100 year history & the worst record for the last 25 years in the AFL cause idiots have been running the club because they live in the history of the club instead of making a new future
no wonder players are wanting to leave our club these days
Oh sorry fishyfingers l hope that answered your questions ;D l feel better now :thumbsup

Thanks TM.
I don't even remember asking a lot of them ;D
Yeah, I was disappointed he lost the captaincy. I can understand why they gave it to Cambo but thought, and still think, it wasn't right.
Wayne was the right person, wrong timing.
I'll still disagree about Knighta resting and coming back, on 2 counts.
First, he had heaps of time off already for ankle surgery.
Second, if he had more time off to rest he wouldn't have reached 300 games the following year.
From a supporter outside the club just watching and supporting him, I thought his time was well and truly up.
-
he may not have made 300 but he could have given the club better service & it would have been in the better interests of the club to not have all the turmoil create
problem at Richmond is they sack or force their players out during the season not at seasons end which would be the proper
like Gasper & Rogers being pushed out the door
How can l explain this is Graham was brought for 1 year which made no sence to me but it was like saying he was better than Gasper a All Australian l'm sure Darren would enjoy playing 3rd to McGuane & Thursfield but the young lads would also play taller knowing Gasper was there to help that was a shocking decision early in the year by Wallace as l thought Gasper played well against Collingwood apart from 2 major mistakes but the whole team turned to pooh after halftime
Oh jake King on handball grandfinal
-
Yeah, Jake won the handball GF. :) On a roll.

GREAT POST.
Two spoons in 5 years
And people think we are headed in the right direction ::)
. We have recruited no decent sized players and players who have defects when they get to us. Richmond should have a basic rule when they recuit, no light weights and nobody under 6ft. and furthermore, at least get players who can kick, no more JON,s

Knighter was captain for 4 years and we didn't make the finals once in that time. In Cambo's first year as captain the following year we did. I never saw any problem with the change but others did because Cambo threatened to walkout once after 99.
There was no point resting Knighter in his last year. He was slowing down and finished as a footballer. Some players don't want to go even at the end of season either. Look a Chubba last year. No other club picked him up in the drafts because his time was up.
Agree Tigermonk about us playing injured players when we shouldn't. A clear sign of a club without depth on their list. We have always relied on 2-3 midfielders carrying the side. It works okay early on when everyone is fit and fresh but as the season goes along they tire and cop injuries because they are competing against sides with 12 or more midfielders rotating on them. We need to develop a list with depth. Sadly it takes a long time starting from scratch like we had to. We have to develop a new core first before we can build around them thanks to past stupidity.
-
I wish Matthew all the best but too be honest I'd be surpsied if he lasts the 3 years.
Not because I don't want to see him succeed but because he is under immense pressure.
It's fine to be "bullish" as he called about the playing list but you also need to have sort of realistic take as well. I question whether he was - Hardwick clearly let rip with some home truths that the EFC didn't appreciate. Matty apperas to have painted a more pleasant picture and he's got the job. If he thinks they (EFC hierachy) and the fans are going to be patient he is kidding himself.
-
Without saying too much, Matthew Knights is greatly respected at the EFC.
From President to players

Appreciate that Jack and for now it's great but I reckon they are going to struggle for a few years and that's not good for Knights. They wont be patient - the natives at Essendon are getting restless
Actually the way the EFC has handled this has been average IMHO. One minute they are saying we need a high profile coach, the make plays for Williams, wont wait another 3 days to talk to Thompson ??? ::) And then they announce the Knights appointment in GF week - like they wanted it get lost in all the GF "hoop-la" - all strange

Reckon Knights knew he was shortlisted the day that Sheeds demise was made public ;)

The problem down at Richmond is they are a breeding ground for other clubs they love us l have heard it first hand
We had Midfielders on the list in Rodan his had a brilliant year another stuff up from Richmond gee his a 2 times Morrish medal winner in the TAC 2 years running you dont let them types go & keep the likes of Krakouer
Krakouer dont give a toss anymore because others are getting a go when injured before him in Tuck Johnson, Newman, Polo, Deledio & Tambling & others
but Richmond choose to stick with injured out of sort players instead of dropping them like Captain Wanker who kicks the wrong way & dont know how to talk to the players on field just kicks a goal runs back thinking his job is done
the funniest effing thing l heard from a player was Johnson does alot off the field at the club l laughed & walked away from him
well who gives a eff about off field stuff they are payed to play on the field & go out each week to get 4 pts nothing more not to look after & teach kids how to play thats the coaches job off the field
professional players dont care about kids who could take thier places & put them out of a job it dont work like that
dont ever think it does cause its every man for himself at Richmond it always has been
Richmond draft skinny weak kids who need years of work to become league footballers but other clubs play there kids from comming to the club first year
l seen so many years of going backwards because coaches say the kids aint ready well thats BS they play senior football for there clubs on bigger men & cop far more than the fairy running AFL football thats being put to us these days
Every other team drafts progress quicker than ours why ??? its because the coach willnot drop his name players afraid that they be upstaged by some raw talent that us Richmond supporters have known & watched for years & screamed about that should have been dropped but instead will play 60% players = 40% effort compared to 100% raw talent & 100% effort & holding raw talent back is not good because it produces bad energy amogst the playing group & then creates attitude problems & not carrying out demands from the coaches
Richmond never gets 100% cause they give 50% for services & cut the wrong peoples throats
makes alot of sence dont it ;D

Contracts play a big part in who goes and who doesn't. Krak was contracted this time last year and Rodan was out of contract so Rodan went. D-Rod has had a good year but had a shocker in the GF. It's easier to look good when the whole team is firing.

From today's Age..
Former Richmond and Fremantle midfielder Ashley Prescott, 35, is firming to join Essendon as an assistant in the off-field team that will surround new coach Matthew Knights next year after talks with the Dons.
Prescott, who played alongside Knights in his six seasons at Punt Road, has since coached Claremont to three of the past four West Australian Football League grand finals.
It is believed that he is contemplating a return to Victoria after declining approaches from at least one club, Richmond, in recent years.

Talk about putting pressure on Knighter. Peter Jackson has come out wanting the Bombers to play finals by 2009 and finish top 4 by 2010. This from the same people who expected to finish top 4 this year :whistle.

Bombers boss puts deadline on Knights
25 October 2007 Herald Sun
Mark Robinson
ESSENDON boss Peter Jackson has put enormous pressure on new coach Matthew Knights, saying the club should play finals in 2009 and "push for top four" in 2010.
If not, Jackson said, those in charge probably shouldn't be at the club.
He said Knights, who was signed to a three-year deal which expires in 2010, had the task of returning credibility to one of the league's powerhouses.
"We've been in the bottom four for three years in a row, we've slid, and there's a total understanding that perhaps Essendon has been a little overrated in recent times and a sense we've got to rebuild our credibility," Jackson said.
Jackson acknowledged holes in the list, particularly in the 24-28 year age group.
"That shows up with the drafts of 2000 and 2001, they were forgettable and we accept that inside the club, we traded in recent years to try to plug some holes and that hasn't worked, so it shows up right now that gap."
