"Diving" for free kicks to be a reportable offence this year

First offence: reprimand letter

Second offence: $1200 fine

Third offence: $2400 fine and I think suspension points as well.

AFL cracks down on cheats

PLAYERS who stage for free kicks will now face a fine from the AFL under changes to the tribunal system.

Staging is now a reportable offence and players found guilty of it will receive a reprimand for this first offence, a $1600 fine for a second time and $2400 for a third offence.

The AFL has also changed rules to protect the man on the mark, to protect against the sling tackle and changed the eye gouging charge to cover the "eye region".

The rough conduct guidelines now specifically refer to sling and spear tackles.

The league says there was a trend last year for an opponent to bump the man on the mark with excessive force and this now also comes under rough conduct.

Only 68 player-games were lost through suspension last year, the lowest total since 1985.

'bout time they started cracking down on this gutless sniping. With the three umpires and the video review system taking away the ability to set someone on their arse with a decent thump, there has been an increase in this type of snipe. Players get away cheap shots now that twenty years ago would have seen them cop one for their troubles.

The game is over umpired as it is now.
Three umpires we're brought in to oversee these behind the play incidents that two umpires struggled to get to.  This diving rule is the equal to a yellow card in soccer for diving to try and win a penalty. Can see controversies on this.
Nevertheless the Anderson / Demetriou regime has been responsible for more rule changes in their tenure than the previous 105 or so years.

Sniping behind the play is a dog act anyway. If you get caught it should be punished more harshly than if you were doing it with the ball nearby.
