Andrew Demetriou won a $200,000 pay rise last year, pocketing $1.8 million in salaries and bonuses.

The AFL announced its figures from the 2009 season today, including details of the executive packages.

Demetriou earned $1.8 million including superannuation and performance bonuses based on achieving key performance indicators while the other 10 members of the league executive earned a total of $5.02 million.

Demetriou earned $1.6 million in 2008.

AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick said the packages were based on reaching a series of key growth figures.

“The executive team is assessed on a range of different categories and how the game is going,” Fitzpatrick said.

“The executive team, under Andrew Demetriou, has taken the game through a difficult period and during that time has managed to secure $116 million funding for the Gold Coast stadium funding, renegotiated the MCG and Etihad stadium contracts which will see more than $150 million returned to AFL clubs across the life of the contracts and also secured a promise of $450 million from the SA Government to redevelop Adelaide Oval.

“Their work has ensured the AFL is not only the leading sport in the country, but one that is committed to growing our game at every level."

The AFL commission today sent the financial results to all 16 clubs ahead of the meeting of club presidents tomorrow. Key results include:

RECORD revenue of $303.5 million in 2009, $1.4 million up on the previous year

RECORD $135.8 million distributed to AFL clubs, up from $131.8 million in 2008

RECORD club membership of 586,748 - the ninth year in a row membership has increased

Crowds in 2009 were the third-highest on record and Geelong's Grand Final win against St Kilda was the most watched TV program in Australia last year.

Fitzpatrick said there were a number of indicators of the long-term health of the game.

"The AFL game is in very good health across our clubs, our players and our grassroots organisations across the country, which is a great credit to everyone involved at every level,” Fitpatrick said.

“In the face of extremely difficult economic conditions for both families and business, it is a great reward for us to be able to point to increased club membership and participation at all levels of the game, as well as attendances of more than seven million supporters.”

The members of the AFL executive are: Demetriou, his assistant Tony Peek, operations manager Adrian Anderson, chief financial officer Ian Anderson, commercial operations manager Gillon McLachlan, marketing and communications manager Paul Waldren, development manager David Matthews, Andrew Catterall, Andrew Dillon, Dale Holmes and Christina Ogg.

I'd say he earned it given the position he is in, and I don't like him.

I have serious doubts that any human being can do anything that warrants being paid that much. It's grotesque and decadent...he he doesn't even have to submit to drug tests.

  • No bish fish, the moon wasnt right.
I may be wrong but i thought club memberships which he is getting credit for was the sole responsibility of the individual clubs.
Also attendances to games has nothing to do with them it is the teams that are winning (Victorian) that is bringing the crowds in.  If anything dimi dim ohh what the wankers name is has had a negative influence on crowds. Im sure everyone knws people that no longer go to games due to all the rule changes.
