---------------------------------------------------------

RICHMOND put up fierce resistance but could not prevent Fremantle running away with a 39-point win at Subiaco on Sunday night.

The Tigers were the better side early, kicking the first five goals of the game, and they were still in the hunt for their first win of 2010 early in the fourth quarter.

However, Fremantle’s form so far this season held true and Mark Harvey’s side advanced to fourth place on the AFL ladder with a 15.22 (112) to 11.7 (73) win.

Fremantle's influential midfield trio of Aaron Sandilands, Michael Barlow and David Mundy drove a run of eight unanswered goals to build a 20-point lead at the final change.

The Tigers refused to go away with early goals in the fourth quarter, but Fremantle clicked into action and booted five of the game’s last six goals.

The Tigers played their best football of a so-far fruitless season in the opening quarter, with Robin Nahas and Brett Deledio in superb touch.

Nahas finished with three goals and 18 possessions as his side’s best, while Nathan Foley (25 possessions) worked into the game.

Dustin Martin (21) continued to play a leading role in Richmond’s engine room, but, despite the visitors' bright start, there was a sense of inevitability about the end result.

It doesn’t get any easier for the last-placed Tigers, who take on Geelong in round six.

Fremantle eases past struggling Tigers
Braden Quartermaine
Herald Sun
April 25, 2010 10:31PM

RICHMOND threatened to cap a weekend of upsets with the biggest of them all before succumbing to Fremantle at Subiaco Oval last night.

Led superbly by tireless ruck giant Aaron Sandilands and with VFL recruit Michael Barlow again instrumental, the Dockers controlled the last three quarters after the Tigers held a shock 26-point advantage at the first change.

While the match reverted to script and the Dockers got home by 39 points, Damien Hardwick, coaching from the box for the first time after spending the opening month of the season directing traffic from the boundary line, was earlier contemplating the first win of his coaching career.

The Tigers, who already have been paid out for the wooden spoon by one betting agency, rattled the Dockers early with a committed pressure approach and slick transition game almost unrecognisable from much of their football this season.

Boosted by the returns of skipper Chris Newman, Nathan Foley, Ben Cousins, Robin Nahas and Luke McGuane, the Tigers kicked the first five goals of the match.

Nahas, Newman and Foley were at the forefront as Richmond threatened a boilover in Richard Tambling's 100th game.

But there was no main course to follow Richmond's appetising entree, with Jack Riewoldt's goal at the 26-minute mark of the first quarter, the Tigers' sixth, not being followed by a seventh until late in the third term as the Dockers booted eight unanswered goals.

Richmond offered some hope for a revival with three of the last four goals of the third quarter and the opener in the last quarter as it closed the gap to 14 points.

But the rally was halted with Matthew Pavlich's third goal, a set shot that sailed over the goal line only because no Richmond defender had got back there.

Tambling was quiet in his milestone match before limping off with a left hamstring injury late in the third quarter, while Troy Taylor suffered a knee injury late in the match.

The Dockers missed out on the massive win they needed to claim top spot on the ladder for the first time in their history.

That carrot may yet be the prize for a comprehensive victory against cross-town rival West Coast next Sunday. Richmond faces a daunting assignment against Geelong at Skilled Stadium, also on Sunday.

With the fierce pressure applied by a young Richmond forward line the highlight in the first quarter, Docker defenders were forced into errors.

Cousins relished working in and under, despite loud boos from the crowd every time he got the ball.

Richmond maintained the lead at the main break despite its goalless second term - the Dockers added 3.7.

With Foley at his industrious best in his first game for the season, the Tigers shaded Freo 16-12 in the first-half clearances despite the predictable hitout dominance of Sandilands.

The Dockers finally took control in the third, dominating and being rewarded on the scoreboard.

Best:
Fremantle: A Sandilands M Barlow M Pavlich H Ballantyne G Broughton A McPhee.
Richmond: R Nahas N Foley D Martin S Tuck A Rance.

Dockers' youth win battle against veterans
TIM CLARKE, PERTH
April 26, 2010

ANZAC Day has always brought the best out in Fremantle, even during its worst seasons. Last night, playing Richmond, it did not need it.

Even after conceding the first five goals of the game, the Dockers looked the likely victors for the majority of this Subiaco clash, running out winners 15.22 (112) to 11.7 (73) in a game honouring the veterans while also featuring a few.

Adam McPhee's return to Perth has been as miserable as Ben Cousins' exit, but the pair both played their part in a game which was won on the back of Aaron Sandilands' continued dominance, and the Dockers growing belief in themselves and their system.

Matthew Pavlich kicked four, Hayden Ballantyne three and Michael Barlow again showed his early season form was no fluke.

But while Dockers' debutant Nat Fyfe did enough to show he may have a bright future, unfortunately for the Tigers it was their older stagers who proved their most capable.

Richmond's last away day in Sydney ended with one player with an eight-week suspension and a black eye, and three others given a week to ponder whether a hotel foyer is the best place to be at 2am.

One of those of course, was Cousins, a man who specialises in controversy and comebacks - none better than the 38 possessions he willed himself for his first game back for West Coast at this ground in 2007. By contrast this was all a bit-low key - as was Fremantle's start.

The Dockers' refreshing opening to the year has been built on the back of fanatic pressure from front to back, epitomised by livewire Ballantyne. The first quarter showed no tackles to the diminutive frontman - and the statistic reflected a quarter in which the Tigers, finally, showed some claws. Damien Hardwick's men induced more than a minute's silence at Subiaco by kicking the first five goals of the contest.

Three of them came directly from free kicks, which upset the natives, but where earned from the umpires rather than granted.

With Fremantle missing regulation shots at one end, Alex Rance and the recalled Robin Nahas kicked two apiece.

But it was Dustin Martin's soccered effort which was met by genuine celebration.

Their absence from the team seemed to have done little harm to Cousins and co, with Nathan Foley leading his side in possessions at the main break, returning skipper Chris Newman also influential, and Cousins himself having seven disposals.

But with Richmond earning 96 possessions to Fremantle's 61 in the first term, it took just one at the start of the second to light the Fremantle fire.

Ballantyne's crunching tackle - his first for the night - allowed Pavlich to run into the goal square.

With the passion back, three goals to none in the quarter was about right for the balance of play.

But debutant Fyfe's first goal eluded him after the siren - and then the young man got his first taste of a genuine AFL melee, with all 44 players exchanging a full and frank exchange on the way to the rooms.

Ryan Crowley was in the middle of it, and so were the cameras getting the footage for the match review panel.

After Paul Duffield gave the Dockers their first lead of the night, the final vestiges of resistance ebbed away, replaced with petulant acts of a team frustrated by their own limitations.

Eight unanswered goals took the Dockers from 27 points down to 31 points up until Nahas' third. And while the flame flickered for the visitors in the last term, it was no eternal flame, with the 1000th AFL/VFL loss for the club unlikely to be the last this year.

BEST
Fremantle: Sandilands, Pavlich, Barlow, Ballantyne, Hill, McPhee.
Richmond: Nahas, Foley, Martin, Rance, Tuck.

Quarter by quarter: Dockers v Tigers
April 26, 2010

First Quarter:

Fremantle's early misses were made worse by goals to Robin Nahas and Dustin Martin to give Richmond some early hope. With the pressure which has symbolized Fremantle's renaissance in 2010 down significantly, the Tigers kicked long and strong put the Dockers' defenders under massive pressure in the shadows of the sticks, and the visitors kicked the first five goals of the game.

Second Quarter:

While Fremantle's youngsters have deserved their plaudits this year, Matthew Pavlich is still their leader and - he proved it again to redress the balance. Kicking his first courtesy of a crunching Hayden Ballantyne tackle, it sparked his team into action. While Richmond led for the entire quarter, it never felt like it, although the home team was still more frustrated than free flowing.

Third Quarter:

The loss of Michael Johnson, after his head was introduced to the Subiaco turf by Luke McGuane, gave Fremantle another headache. But after wasting yet more chances, Paul Duffield finally found the way between the big sticks, the Dockers began to dominate as had been expected. Playing football without access to a football became impossible for the Tigers, who were not helped by Luke McGuane's brain fade to hand Ballantyne his first.

Fourth Quarter:

Richmond's final throw of the dice brought them back to within 14 points twice, but getting there cost them any energy they had left. Jack Riewoldt's juggling mark was the last notable act of any Tiger, as the Dockers finally put the visitors out of their misery, with Pavlich kicking his fourth and Ballantyne his third. Both were way better than Richmond's best. - TIM CLARKE

Its the likes of Greg broughton and barlow that have made them better.
Ironically, both of them were mature recruits from state leagues.
Broughton was 22 in his first year of AFL last year, Barlow is also 22 this year, Silvagni is another one who's been very good for them this year and he is another 22 year old in his first year.

They paid well over the odds for Tarrant, but he's been great down back, he showed on the weekend that he kicks for goal like a defender. He was the most over rated forward (if not player) of all time when he was at Collingwood.
