AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has given his stamp of approval to the recent actions of the Richmond Football Club, as the club braces for a bitter election on 22 December.

Demetriou said the Tiger board had carried out a "tremendous amount" of work in the last four months and had been working closely with the AFL.

They've obviously appointed a new coach, they’ve recruited well and their business plan on which we’ve worked closely with them, we're pretty pleased with."

"They've made some changes. They've got a new CEO who's doing a wonderful job, Steven Wright, so the board that we've been working with has been very, very responsible in the past few months."

When asked about the unusual move of football director Greg Miller to stand for the board as part of president Clinton Casey's ticket, Demetriou said the issue wasn't one of a conflict of interest, but one of how it would be managed.

"I guess without doubt there would be a conflict but then again it would be how you manage that conflict? And there are conflicts of interest that occur in football, but the question then becomes how you manage that."

The Tigers have confirmed an operating loss of more than $2 million for the recent financial year.

Seriously you just need to look at the numbers to see we screwed up ridiculously overestimating predicted income during 2004 but have now forecasted a realistic income for 2005 in line with actual amounts achieved in 2003 and 2004. We have also made $1.5m cuts to expenditure. Through the work of Wright we have fixed up the books so we will live within our means from now on. That's why the AFL is backing us.
