Summary

* If you said two years ago Cuz was going to play 32 of 44 games and finished 7th in our B&F last year Cameron said he would've been surprised. Ben's body has held up well.

* Craig spoke about Cuz's name being mentioned first at a Tommy Hafey luncheon in 2008 when the Club hadn't considered taking Ben. Admits there was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing in the lead up to the draft and the decision wasn't made to draft Cuz until the night before the PSD.

* Spoke to Cuz about being a mentor and the watching the young guys at Coburg and helping them but nothing further given he still has two games to go. If there was a mentoring role that fitted in with what Ben wanted to do then that's a possibility but it's up to Ben.

* Healy and Russell brought up Liam Jurrah (as far as drafting him instead of Cousins) and Cameron reminded them that special permission was given for Jurrah to be taken in the PSD and Melbourne had first pick in the PSD that year whereas we had pick 6.

* Thanked Ben's dad Bryan for supporting Ben.

* No concerns about losing players to Gold Coast. We have some players left uncontracted but we have no concerns as far as the Gold Coast.

* Martin still has one year left on his contract so GC can't touch him. GWS could next year but we're sitting down with Ricky Nixon (Martin's manager) at the moment.

* Dwayne Russell asked if 50,000 will turn up at Etihad for the last game to say goodbye to Cousins. Cameron said it'd be nice but we've budgeted for a crowd 20-25k. Russell reckons Cuz's last game will attract 10-15k more people than usual.

Yep hopefully Cuz's last game brings a crowd. I remember just 15k turning up at Etihad against Port for our last home game in 2003 and that was the week the great man passed away.

That sounds promising.

For some reason, I thought that was a Hawks game.

Richmond Operations Manager Craig Cameron reflects on the career of Ben Cousins after the controversial AFL star retired on Tuesday.

Play Audio - Craig Cameron on 3AW

Among other things, Cameron says:

- Kevin Sheedy 'ambushed me' at a club function making a case to recruit Cousins.

- There was confusion initially as to whether the club would go with Cousins.

- Cousins may have a mentoring role at Coburg but it will be up to him.

- There's no regrets the club took Cousins rather than Liam Jurrah because 'they wouldn't have got him anyway'.

- Brian Cousins had a trotter running recently which ran last.

- The Tigers don't fear poaching from the Gold Coast Suns with most of the key players locked up.
