November 12, 2010CONTROVERSIAL former West Coast and Richmond midfielder Ben Cousins is a shock nomination for the Madden Medal.
The self-confessed drug addict, who was suspended by the AFL for a year for bringing the game into disrepute, could win the award that recognises a retiring player who has "contributed most to the game and the broader community".
Cousins is nominated alongside Brad Johnson, Brett Kirk, Simon Goodwin, Andrew McLeod, Warren Tredrea and Brett Burton.
"Football will be poorer for their departure from the game, but their legacies will endure for decades to come," AFL Players' Association general manager of player relations Ian Prendergast said.
Named after the Madden brothers, Simon and Justin, the Madden Medal was established in 2007, when James Hird, Nathan Buckley, Glenn Archer, Mark Ricciuto and Anthony Koutoufides all retired.
