Who are the Tiger match winners?
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:59:58 PM »
She-who-must-be-obeyed was determined to watch the Skunks vs Aints GF reply again tonight. I managed to negotiate watching it without the commentary.  We started talking about who were the match winners.  After some robust discussion, we tried to define a match winner.

In the end, we came up with this list;

- Who wins first use of the ball at stoppages?
- Who wins the ball back when the other team has it?
- Who sets up the scoring opportunities?

So, if this list is valid, who are the RFC match winners?

Or, are their other roles that define the true match winners?  For instance, the players whose names are always called by the commentary team, the flashy ones and the big names?

I might wait until we actually win a match before worrying about match winners.

The ones who have potential as match winners are Jack, Cotch and Dusty.

Jack showed in the game against the Eagles he can kick 4 goals in a hurry and turn a game.

Cotch just through his sheer brilliance can make something out of nothing.

Martin can through his physicality. Win a few hard balls, lay some crunching tackles and unleash a few devastating fend offs.

Pretty accurate list there Muscles based on last night.

(i) Blues dominated the centre clearances for 3 quarters and hence dominated the scoring; only the 3rd qtr did we get on top in the middle and no coincedence we kicked 6.3 to their 3 behinds.

(ii) We turned over the ball far too easily especially from our kicks-ins (see other thread).

(iii) 34 scoring shots to 19 meant the scoreboard flattered us to a degree. We got flogged for the best part of 3 quarters so we're still a fair fair way off but we already knew that.

Our matchwinners clearly are Jack and our top tier contested midfielders if they can get on top in the centre. Cotch was brilliant in that 3rd qtr. Sadly our mids were well beaten for most of the other 3 quarters on the spread from the stoppages.  We are still like a stuff of seagulls going for a chip - we get too many players sucked into the congestion trying to stop the opposition from bursting through the stoppage and we leave space for an opposition mid to handball over the congestion to another opposition midfielder who peals off and get the handball receive running out into space. Judd, Murphy and Gibbs were feeding each other this way all night.

I didn't see anyone stand out last night as the player in the back half who could consistently win the ball back from the opposition. I thought the Blooze forwards one too many of the one-on-ones.
