March 29, 2011 In round one, opening night festivities at the Gabba and Patersons Stadium quickly gave way to stunned silence as Brisbane Lions skipper Jonathan Brown and West Coast spearhead Mark Le Cras went down with serious injuries.
Both stars are virtually irreplaceable for their respective sides, who must now adapt immediately if they're to avoid another year in the AFL cellar.
With that harsh reality in mind, we decided to cast an eye over every AFL list and ask, 'which is the player your club can't afford to lose?'.
Here's what we came up with. Take a look and leave your nomination at the bottom of the story.
Richmond
Chris Newman: The obvious choice is Coleman Medal winner and best and fairest Jack Riewoldt. But Newman's leadership, often understated outside of Punt Road, is crucial for the Tigers' cubs. He was second to Riewoldt in the best and fairest after a standout 2010. His use out of a defence which is often under siege is important and the direction he provides invaluable.
