THIS year Champion Data - the AFL's official stats company - has employed two extra statisticians at each match to chart what it calls "the Hit Rate" - the percentage of kicks that hit targets based on the degree of difficulty of the kick.

Each kick is graded by five characteristics - distance, direction, intent, target zone and pressure. There are more than 500 different types of kicks measured.

A player then has a plus or minus rating.

Port Adelaide's Matthew Broadbent was the 100th ranked player after Round 8 (50 kicks to qualify).

Broadbent had 59 kicks after Round 8, not including kicks off the ground and quick kicks out of packs with no intended target which are purely for distance.

The Expected Rate of those 59 kicks was 61.6 per cent. But Broadbent's Hit Rate was 62.7 per cent, giving him a Rating of +1.1.

Melbourne forward Liam Jurrah led the competition with a Rating of +17.1.

Below is the top 100 after Round 8.

A higher Expected Rate means a player attempts easier kicks. A lower figure means he often tries the impossible.

The higher the Rating, the better the kicker is performing.

K: Kicks. E: Expected rate (%). HR: Hit rate (%). R: Rating.

Goddard has had a poor year yet is 2nd on that list so it's not a definitive measurement of a footballer. While the 'hit rate' is a better attempt to measure a footballer's footskill level than just the old efficency percentage it still doesn't measure well how a player's 'hit rate' imposes on his team's hit rate (scoreboard). I guess you could combine it with the stat that records how many times a player was involved in a scoring play. If you can kick precisely and with penetration to pierce through an opposition's zone press and hit a teammate out the back then your worth to the team is massive.
