Player review of last night
« on: February 19, 2005, 03:53:43 AM »
Bowden - More solid than anything. Not sure how the team losing after being 25 points up will affect his captaincy chances. Perfect time as captain to take control and slow down the game when under siege.

Brown - surprised he was one of leading possession getters although 16 isn't alot. Quite game IMO but it's his first run as he didn't play in the intra-club. Apparently Wallace got stuck into him after the game.

Campbell - Wasn't our worst but father time has caught up as he struggles to get those shonky old pins of his now going.

Chaffey - I think he was tagging Woewodin so did his job there although didn't get much of it himself.

Deledio - Good effort in his first game. Only one bad mistake where he passed straight to a Pie. Classy first goal.

Gas - Better effort but we need work towards new personel in KPs in the next few years. Rocca got the footy too often although Gas did force puff puff to lead far and wide.

Graham - Fairly typical game of his.

Hartigan - Fairly quite. Fluffed a good  chance on goal after weaving well out of a pack of players.

Hyde - Continued on from the good intra-club form he showed although didn't burn off opponents tonight.

Jackson - Tried hard at FB by got toweled up by Tarrant. Isn't his position really and he's more suited to further up the ground. Traditionally Gas or Kellaway always took Tarrant.

Johnson - Another consistent and solid game.

Kellaway - Same as Gas.

Krakouer - A typical Krakouer game. In and out of the action.

Knobel - Did well I thought most of the time in the ruck.

Newman - more like the player he can be generating plenty of run out of defence.

Pattison - didn't get a touch and spent a fair bit of time on the bench. Let him develop at Coburg when Staff comes back into the side.

Richo - Most likely kissed the captaincy good-bye after that double 50m spat. Not sure if it was the pass itself or Richo leading under the ball but he would try to mark the ball at arm-raised height above his head which was easily punched away. A group of us were talking on the train on the way home about how Richo would receive more frees if he led rather than wrestled in the goalsquare. He did lead up the ground and not towards the boundary line which was a good sign although IMO he didn't mix it up enough leading too straight up the middle too often. Off course when Richo is at FF a number of his teammates didn't bother looking for other options up forward.

Roach - Fairly quiet apart from his supergoal.

Rodan - Like Krakouer was in and out of the game. Wallace has given him a chance to start at centre bounces. He need to take it.

Schulz - Quiet before breaking his ankle. Probably won't see him back until the second half of the year.

Simmonds - Pretty good game. Would be in our best 6 for the night.

Tambling - Looked a bit lost in the first quarter but found his feet and confidence once he snagged the great supergoal on the run. Good first up effort.

Tivendale - Like Browny surprised he got 15 possies. Disappointing as he has a very good Intra-club game in the lead-up to last night. With supergoals on offer he should be collecting the footy more just outside 50. Still no right side.

Tuck - Not bad but like so many of our blokes last night drifted in and out of the game. Good after half time.

How the new faces shaped up
19 February 2005
Herald Sun

BRETT DELEDIO
Started on the bench and was eased into the contest, but it wasn't long before the boy from Kyabram showed why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2004 national draft.

With just his second kick, the silky youngster swooped on a loose ball and drilled a goal from 30m on the run after the old guard -- Wayne Campbell and Matthew Richardson -- had combined.

Was used predominantly up forward, and there was a touch of class and poise in everything he did.

Tired late but that was to be expected.

Clearly belongs at the elite level.

RICHARD TAMBLING
Brilliant. Couldn't have scripted a better debut.

Wiry, fast and exciting, he is sure to feature in highlights packages this year.

Began up forward and wasted no time in using his pace and skill to quickly win possessions when let loose in the midfield.

Provided the goal of the night when, building pace, he latched on to the ball in the middle, easily evaded a desperate dive from Scott Burns and, with poise, speared through a super goal from 55m. Simply magic.

Like Daniel Wells and Aaron Davey, Tambling will be compelling viewing when he is near the ball.

ADAM PATTISON
Saw little action and didn't lodge a possession. A major learning curve for the thinly built 198cm youngster.

MARK GRAHAM
Handed a lifeline by the Tigers when taken late in the national draft, the former Hawk -- a life member at his old club -- began in the unfamiliar position of centre half-forward.

The surprise move looked good early when he hauled in a strong mark but missed the shot at goal.

Moved to defence late in the last quarter when the Tigers were under siege and looked far more comfortable. The young cubs will learn plenty from him.

TRENT KNOBEL
The criticism of the former Saint was that while he regularly dominated the hitouts, he was otherwise a non-factor.

He did little to change that view but worked hard and crashed packs just as Wallace wanted.

Still only 24, Knobel has time to improve and will provide one half of a strong tandem with Greg Stafford.

TROY SIMMONDS
Worth the effort that went into snaring him. At 196cm and 100kg-plus, the former Docker is a mountain of a man and was an imposing figure up forward.

Spent a lot of time at full-forward which allowed Richardson to move to a pocket and not be the focus of all attacking moves.

Splits packs with the power of a jackhammer and brought the ball to ground when unable to mark, allowing the likes of Tambling and Andrew Krakouer to stay involved.
