Brian Royal's pre-match radio comments backfire
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:46:12 PM »
Melbourne assistant coach Brian Royal was on SEN prior to yesterday's game and said they were certainties to win  :wallywink. Newy apparently heard the interview and passed the comments onto Dimma and the boys for motivation.

Well done Chocco!  ;D

I just read the article on the heraldsun website. How dumb does he look now. Just goes to show nothing is ever a certainty in sport.

Here's the Herald-Sun article....

Tigers get a Royal rev-up before Melbourne win

    Sam Edmund
    From: Herald Sun
    August 22, 2011

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has revealed a pre-match radio interview with Melbourne assistant Brian Royal helped fire the Tigers to yesterday's come-from-behind win.

Speaking before the clash at the MCG, Royal said the Demons were a better side and certain to win.

"Oh we'll win, I've got no doubt about that,'' Royal told SEN radio.

"From where we've come from over the last couple of weeks where it's been really disappointing losing Dean Bailey to start with because Dean and the playing group were very close.

"I just hope they can now gain confidence out of what Todd (Viney) has been trying to do to get us across the line today because I know that we're a better team, we proved that in Round 14 the last time we played them.

"I'd be really disappointed if we couldn't get across the line today.''

Royal's comments were heard and quickly relayed to the Tigers rooms before the first bounce.

"It was quite funny, Chris Newman, he must have heard it ... he came in and told me those comments before the game,'' Hardwick said.

"I think Chris might have actually spoken to the group just prior to them going out so it's quite amazing how those things filter down.

"Look ... at the end of the day, Brian's not going to come out and say they're not going to win is he?''

He's a nice guy, that's for sure.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”
