Daniel Jackson on SEN @ 1.30pm
« on: August 31, 2011, 02:04:10 PM »
Jacko was just on SEN with Daniel Harford...

* Easier to come on the show after a few wins. Last time he was on we'd lost a few in a row and he had to come on and explains things.

* Always going to be one of those years where we'd be up and down given we've got a young group. We haven't played any special footy in the wins - just focussed on the basics and doing the simple things right - tackles, contested footy, etc...

* Confidence and consistency is the key. Collingwood produce consistent efforts every week as do all the top sides. With a young side you don't always get that consistency.

* Conca, Batchelor - as first year players have had good games/bad games and good/bad patches even within a games. The 2-3 year guys are still developing as well. Get more games into them so they build that consistency.

* Strong focus on development at the moment at the club even down to off-field things such as sleeping right.

* Lazy start against Adelaide but lifted after half-time. Good to get a win interstate.

* If you asked supporters at the start of the year given our young list that we'll finish ninth that'd take it. Of course now questions come about why did you lose you Port and Gold Coast; well then you can ask why did we win over Sydney and Adelaide. As he said peaks and troughs.

* Selling home games was done to improve the future - enables us to bring in Houli, Grigg and better development facilites within the club. Sure it may have hurt this year but it will all help us in the coming 2-3 seasons.

* Foley, Houli, Grigg have added to the side. Tuck, Miller - impact when they've come in despite being overlooked at times. Conca, Batchelor - have shown good signs in their first year. Your first year takes a lot out of you.

* Vickery been very good. Harford said he questioned TV last year if he would make it but he's proven him and many people wrong. Jacko said Jack takes the best defender and creates space playing unselfish footy and TV to his credit has thrived. Given us more options up forward this year.

* Newy will be captain for a while. Cotch is one of the top candidates next in line; Lids is good leader; Foley; Jack has matured a lot.

* Sling tackles - he can see where the AFL is coming from in protecting the player BUT it's not a social game. It's physical and tough and that's how we've grown up with it and told to go about it. He has issues with the rule rather than the MRP. Never been involved in a sling tackle that he can remember but he does second guess himself when blocking and bumping as he's been reported for that in the past. It did get to him there for a while as his intensity dropped off and he played poorly. He realised he has to play with intensity and physicality to play at his best.

* He advocated two byes two years ago on the show. We have two byes this year but they brought in the sub rule which has increased general soreness. Next year they (AFL)  said the season will be reduced to just one bye which is ridiculous. He hopes the AFL includes general soreness as an injury so they don't fudge the injury figures.

* Hard for young sides to call on reserves in the 3rd and last quarters. This favours more matures sides as they can maintain the intensity needed to run out games for longer. That's the reason why he thinks there are more blowouts.

* Off to the States over the off-season. He'll live with a friend and train in New York in October.

Would suggest Conca has been put on ice. His body probably needs a huge rest to get over all the niggles before preseason begins. Batchelor seems to have a bigger body already so this probably explains why he saw more games at the latter stages of the season that Conca. Wonder how long until we see McDonald?

Wonder if they are given bedtimes and correct bedding???

Lids - the forgotten captain....

Whole-heartedly agree with this. No reason the season can't be extended by a week and either rotate the byes like this year or have two split rounds. Would see less injuries and a better finish to the season as players get used to the new sub rule and current style of play.

I wonder about Jackson's future. I just don't think he has the decision making or desposal skills we need in the middle going forward. Now that he is tagging less what will be his role?
