GEELONG may have won the Grand Final, but the club is a long way from being football's most popular.

Australian search trend analysis by Google ranked the AFL's 18 teams' popularity for 2011 to reveal Essendon as the big winner of the year.

The Bombers narrowly beat Collingwood to give them their only victory over the Magpies in 2011.

Meanwhile, the premiership-winning Cats ranked a surprising fifth behind third-placed Carlton and fourth-placed Richmond, the first time the Tigers have made the eight on any AFL ladder in a decade.

Newcomers the Gold Coast Suns and the GWS Giants picked up the wooden spoon.
