THE expectation surrounding boom Richmond recruit Richard Tambling may be forced to linger for another week.

The brilliant midfielder has a badly bruised toe and is in doubt for the Tigers' opening match against Geelong at the MCG on Sunday.

Even if Tambling, 18, roars through training today and again on Friday, coach Terry Wallace said the youngster is no certainty to play against the Cats.

"He's missed a bit of footy," said Wallace, highlighting Tambling's inability to complete practice matches in the past fortnight.

"He didn't play on the weekend and only played a half the week before.

"Three weeks ago he was an absolute guarantee to play.

"Now we've got to make a decision whether it's the right thing to do by the boy to play him.

"If he flies around the track over the next two training sessions, we've got a decision to make whether we believe his lead-up to the season is right."

Despite losing its past 14 matches, to be on the verge of a club record 15 successive losses, if Richmond goes down to the Cats, Tambling is one of the players who has given the Richmond faithful heart.

He showed flashes of magic during Richmond's loss against Collingwood in the opening round of the Wizard Cup last month.

Tambling provided the goal of the night when, building pace, he latched on to the ball in the middle, easily evaded a desperate dive from Scott Burns and, with poise, speared through from 55 metres.

Attempting to revive the club from its lowest ebb, Wallace said there will not only be significant changes in personnel, with five new players, but a difference in style.

While Joel Bowden won the club best and fairest playing at centre half-back and Matthew Richardson kicked more than 60 goals at full-forward, Wallace emphasised the club still finished last.

"It's not what's good for the player, it's what's good for the team," he said.

"Guys are likely to be used in varying roles.

"Mark Chaffey has trained all summer as being a run-with player in the midfield rather than a backman. There will be a fair bit of difference to the side which ran out in round 22 last year."

If Tambling gets through training fine then play him; otherwise if there's any doubt let his toe get right as missing round 1 isn't going to make the slightest difference in the grand scheme of things.

Stiff!  . Richo was, is and never will be a FF. Only Spud was stupid enough to think a new gameplan was to get him to stack on 10kg and plonk him in the goalsquare. No wonder we were one dimensionsal and only averaged 11 goals a game   .

Not concerned in the slightest if Tambling doesn't play, would rather have him 100% before he took the field, plenty of time.
