To be a top side means to be able to gut run
« on: March 30, 2012, 05:53:42 AM »
If anything stood out last night which we can learn from, it was Carlton's ability to gun run and spread a team over the whole 4 quarters. They always got numbers to the each and every contest and always provided an 'out' teammate out wide or on the switch. It enabled them to get out of tight situations whereas we just coughed up the footy. It's probably no surprise that most of the scoreboard damage was done in the last 15 minutes of each of the halves - we were able to go with them for the 1st quarter and a bit and the 3rd quarter and a bit after the main break but after that we looked off our feet while the Blues really put the foot down and ran out both halves to the siren. No surprise either our skills and team defensive structure totally fell away as well in those later periods. The obvious excuse is we are a younger side/list compared to their more mature side and it's going to take another couple of years to get to that elite gun running in waves stage. However, our inability to match the running power of the top sides has plagued us for a long long time now even well before our current crop came to Tigerland. Until we fix that we will continual to struggle to get near these top sides over 4 quarters.

Martin and Lid's last night were both very poor defensively! If the ball went back past them they didn't want to know about it.  It's one thing to have great skills but to become elite you have to learn to run and chase back the other way as well, these two last night showed they were far from elite :( :(

Agree MT. This was evident every time Carlton did the switch in Monopoly terms, they got the community chest card that said "Advance to GO and collect $200". Whenever we did the switch, we pulled a community chest card that said "Go directly to Jail". You could have grown crops on the wing when we tried to switch.  :banghead

Yep, everytime a carlton player gave a 30 metre pass, 3 seconds later they were whizzing past looking for the receive, its ingrained in them - give and go, give and go... not many players do it from our side

I agree Tas. Noticed Marin a couple of times look spent and unable/unwilling to chase. I saw Lids got 21 possessions but went missing for most of the game from where I sat!

Cotchin, Rance, Conca, Webberley, Nahas are the only ones that I've seen do it regularly.

Despite the noted deficiencies in his game, Matty White is very good at this.

Does it seldomly though Tiga. Drifts in and out of the game like the tide.
