FANS have been urged to use public transport to travel to matches at the MCG in round nine, as Melbourne's wet weather causes havoc.

Melbourne's drenching on Friday has seen the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) decide to close a large portion of Yarra Park for Saturday's Richmond-Hawthorn and Sunday's Carlton-Melbourne games.

"After an assessment early this afternoon the MCC, manager of Yarra Park and the MCG, has deemed the park's condition to be too wet to accommodate any vehicles tonight," the MCC said in a media release on Friday.

"The park's condition will be assessed again on Saturday morning to determine whether any part of Yarra Park will be open for vehicle parking at tomorrow's Richmond v Hawthorn match. A similar assessment will be made on Sunday prior to the Carlton v Melbourne match.

"It is likely, however, that only a very limited number of parking spaces will be offered for either match.

"As a result, the MCC encourages patrons to use public transport where possible. Anyone driving to the MCG this weekend should seek an alternative parking area in Melbourne's CBD and surrounding inner suburbs."

Updates will be made available via the clubs' websites, mcg.org.au, on Saturday morning or the MCG newsfeed on Twitter and Facebook across the weekend.
