Forward line coach Mark Williams on SEN
« on: May 29, 2012, 01:09:55 PM »
Assistant and forward line coach Mark Williams was on SEN @ 12.50pm:

* Very happy with the win. It's been coming. We've been close before but just hadn't been able to get across line against top sides like Geelong, Eagles and Essendon. Swans win gave us confidence and it all came together against hawthorn.

* Exploited stats saying you can take marks against the Hawthorn backs; that their mids are poor at defending when in transition; and we made sure we were solid down back so Buddy and Cyril didn't break loose.

* Jack's back. He's manipulating defenders, got his feet going and moving about forward line. Everyone worked together up forward.

* Had to re-adjust to defenders pushing back (7 defenders these days). As a forwards group we've worked on that over the past 3-4 weeks. We are now creating more space for Jack.

* When you have a defender get off the lease you need to put a defensive forward on him. So you end up needing to restructure up forward yourself. For instance we put a heavy tag on Heppel against Essendon and it ended up causing us to restructure up as well.

* The backline has been great this year. Our defenders have been very cohesive which is a credit to Leppa as backline coach.

* Maric's desperation and aggression is a great asset. Even around the ground he'll get a hand in there or create a block which allows our smalls/mids to get to the fall of the ball and win the footy.

I think he should be counting his lucky stars that he has a job in my opinion. Forwards have been stuffed this year since he has had hold of them. Danny Daly id light years in front of this character.

It might be a case of the Forwards trying to adjust to what he wants as well.  They certainly nailed it against the hawkers.

Don't agree, they didn't nail anything against the hawks.

Were you watching the right game?? 13 goals from our forwards, 7 from our midfield and 1 from a backman. I would say our forwards nailed it on the weekend :huh

IMO, this guy has done nothing!

Our forwards lead to the pockets instead of leading in the middle.

They still try to out body their opponents instead of just jumping and stretching their arms and hands!

Defenders worry about the forwards and want to make body contact with them.

Our forwards are dangerous when they jump for the mark and not dangerous when their feet are planted!

Apparently that is part of the overall plan so that when the ball hits the deck we dont leave ourselves open to be cut to shreds on the rebound. Im not condoning it as I have been one of the biggest whingers about Jack this season, but if this is true then I can also see the benefit as we have improved out of sight in not getting smashed on the counter. Kind of like collingwoods boundary line attacks, rarely allowed the opponent to cut through them on the counter, easier to set up a zone on one side of the ground and roll with the switch than not knowing which way it will come out when youve gone through the corridor, hence why pies look more vulnerable this season as Bucks is wanting them to attack through the corridor more.

Correct tm.  It's the gameplan.  Not Williams on its own but the overall gameplan that Dimma wants.

if you are kicking to a contest , then kicking to a pocket is not such a bad idea.
Chances are the defenders will force the ball out, which results in a throw in, to a dangerous spot. rather than have the defenders force the ball for a rushed behind, which then gives the enemy possession.

So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
