Development coach Greg Mellor's summary of how the Richmond-listed players performed at Coburg last Saturday...
SeniorsBen Darrou
A good learning experience for him. Gave his quality opponent too much latitude, but it was pleasing to see him remain positive and continue to be offensive when we had the ball. His ball use continues to be very effective.
Dave Astbury
Had some really strong aspects to his game. Collected 24 possessions as a key defender and set up many rebounds from the backline. Is focusing on his starting points, so he can have a stronger defensive side to his game.
Todd Elton
Had a quiet game. Worked hard, but did not receive many opportunities, one-on-one, to have an impact. Some good reflex handballs from him brought team-mates into the game, but, overall, we know he can improve on that performance.
Steve Verrier
Had a quiet first half playing on the wing, but then performed well in a ‘run-with’ role on opposition ‘ball-magnet’, Myles Sewell, keeping him to just five possessions in the second half, after he’d had 20 in the first half. We were really pleased with Steve’s effort, particularly as this was the first time he has played this role.
Angus Graham
Dominated the hit-outs, but the midfielders were not able to fully capitalise on that advantage. Took a couple of strong marks, but missed some crucial ones that he would normally expect to take. He has been working hard on this with Richmond assistant coach, Brendon Lade, after training.
Tom Derickx
Played mainly as a key forward, with some time also spent in the ruck. While he didn’t impact as much as he would have liked, he did take five marks, although he also spilled a couple he should have taken. Improvement in this area is going to take his game to the next level. Having 18 hit-outs, as a secondary ruck, was pleasing.
Brad Miller
Always upbeat and cheerful, he played his role for the team. Worked really hard as a key forward, taking nine marks, but picked up most of these well outside the forward-50 area, thus limiting his shots for goal. His voice and leadership is really positive for the young players at Coburg.
DevelopmentAndrew Browne
Another strong performance. Played in the development team to ensure he spent 95% of the time in the ruck. Dominated the hit-outs and took several marks around the ground, despite often being double-teamed.
Piva Wright
An improved performance. Provided the run-and-carry we want from defence. His ball use was also better, although we believe it can become even more efficient. Defensive actions were also quite solid and an improvement on the previous week.
