Richmond coach Damien Hardwick ‘disappointed' with West Coasts tactics

by: Bruce Matthews
From: Herald Sun July 12, 2012 8:34AM

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has backed North Melbourne over the condemnation of West Coast's AFL Tribunal tactics.

Hardwick said today that he also didn't like the Eagles' insinuations that Roo Lindsay Thomas contributed to the incident where Eagle Luke Shuey was suspended for a punch to the groin area.

"I'd be disappointed if our club went about it that way,'' Hardwick said.

"The incident was what it was. It's not something we want to see in our game. And then to put the view that Lindsay Thomas added to it was a little bit of a long bow to draw for mine.

"I think the tribunal is in a pretty good spot at the moment. I think the system itself is good. There's a few things we could change. The problem now is with the amount of camera angles, the (demerit points) loading is the thing that's becoming a lot harder.

"The little punches to the stomach which are intentional are incidents that deserve loading. But where someone like Matthew White has to make a split second decision on what to do, whether to protect himself or bump, those ones are incidental ones where I don't think a loading should apply. But that's something we could take up with the AFL.''

Hardwick said the Tigers will struggle to replace midfielder Nathan Foley after his season-ending ankle injury at training this week.

"We were out training at Craigieburn and we watching him run around. We were hoping he would play this week,'' the Tigers coach said on SEN.

"And then to see him pull up the way he did, it was sickening in your stomach to be perfectly frank.

"We were really disappointed for him, he has put in an enormous amount of work and he's such a diligent young man. But he'll be back. The positive is now he can get it fixed and move on because it has obviously dogged him for a number of years.

"We're just very much looking forward to him coming back into the group and getting his mind right because it is a tough road in rehab for anywhere between six and 12 months.

"Prior to his injury, he would've been top five in our best and fairest. He's sort of that guy that other teams let go because of the (Brett) Deledio, (Dustin) Martin, (Trent) Cotchin match-ups. He was regularly getting 25 touches and hitting the scoreboard as well, so it's a massive loss for us.''

But the upside for the Tigers is the recovery of tall defender Kelvin Moore whose in contention to make his comeback against the Gold Coast in Cairns on Sunday.

"When Kelvin went in for the operation, the surgeons said 'look, this kid will be lucky to play footy again','' Hardwick said.

"They likened it to a car crash the damage to his hips. They had to completely separate them and rebuild them. And to come back the way he has. He has played very well at VFL level, his intensity and speed is there also.

"We're very pleased with the way he's going and we going to take him up to Cairns and see how he goes. He has certainly put his hand up for selection.''

And Hardwick finally put the rest the rumour that he had a physical dust-up with Daniel Connors when the Tiger was kicked out of the club last week.

"It was a heated verbal confrontation, there's no doubt about that because it was really disappointing that Dan put himself in that situation and he knew full well where he stood at the footy club,'' he said.

"It's not something we want to do is end a player's career and it was unfortunate it came to that. So you can imagine when it does, it's going to become a heated, verbal conversation.

"The one thing we always talk about at the footy club is, you tarnish our family name, you tarnish the footy club and it's unacceptable. That's something we've been really strong on in my time at the club.''

I can't believe the Eagles tried to get Q-stick off his tripping charge. It was as blatant as you'd ever see  :lol

Here's the audio of Dimma's interview [7.35 mins]

http://www.sen.com.au/audioplayer/Audio/Damien-Hardwick/5197

* On the SEN newsbreaks Dimma said it's frustrating have 3 fit players in the stands.

* The concept of goal technology is right but we need more cameras to get the right result. It puts pressure on goalumpires as they the world is watching for any mistake. They'll get it right eventually.

* On Cousins returning to footy as a coach? Dimma said Football in general can help. He believes Ben needs to start at a lower level and work his way up and rebuild his reputation. It won't be happening at our club but wishes Ben all the best.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says missing three players to suspension for Saturday's AFL clash with Gold Coast is something the club can ill afford.

Hardwick says the gut-wrenching loss of Nathan Foley for the AFL season compounds the disappointment of having three fellow midfielders out suspended.

Daniel Jackson and Matt White will miss Saturday's clash with Gold Coast in Cairns, while Dustin Martin is serving the second game of his club-imposed suspension.

Hardwick said with injuries having hit the club hard in recent weeks, it was frustrating to also lose players through poor discipline.

"We've got three players that are capable of playing but can't because of either club or AFL suspensions," Hardwick told reporters on Thursday.

"It's becoming more and more important as the year goes on with availability of players to have those guys up and going.

"We can't afford suspension, especially with undisciplined acts."

Martin, suspended over the recent sleeping pill incident that cost teammate Daniel Connors his career with the Tigers, still travelled with the squad to Cairns on Thursday.

Hardwick was hopeful the club-imposed penalty would prove a defining moment in the enormously-talented 21-year-old's career.

"We think it will be the starting block for him to build his career going forward," Hardwick said.

"It's a real eye-opener for him and part of our preparation that we're not willing to turn a blind eye to.

"It's really important he gets the message and I've got no doubt he will."

The Tigers suffered a shock loss to the Suns in Cairns last year, but Hardwick said flying up a day earlier this year for what is nominally a Richmond home game should help.

"The windy conditions is probably the thing that caught us out most up there (last year)," he said.

"We'll train over the course of the next two days there and make sure we get a gauge of the conditions."
