VIDEO: Hardwick and Grigg in the post-match press conference ...

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/roar%20vision%20archive/tabid/11454/contentid/476113/default.aspx

* We got a bit too cautious with the ball. We had 4-5 marks during that period but had no run nor overlap going. Once the guys sent the message out that was rectified and we moved the ball more freely after that.

* Thought we always controlled the game but they got a couple centrebounce clearance goals in that last quarter which gets the game closer. Pleased to see the guys fight the game out which was good.

* Thought we had learnt from the previous few weeks. You've just got to look at the evenness of the comp. Last night in the Geelong v Hawthorn game, one side was trying save the game and the other was trying to win it, so it's really hard at stages. We certainly learnt some valuable lessons over the past month of footy. The positive is we'll bounce back and try to get better.

* To a degree was shocked Simon Black was the sub for Brisbane but he did look a little lame so he may have been carrying something into the game. He's still an outstanding player and he got 15 touches in a quarter and bit so in the end we had to tag him. After that Jackson kept Black to just two touches.

* Pleased with the spread of goalkickers. Although Jack only kicked two for the night, his marking was outstanding; Lukey McGuane chipped in with 3 and Griggy had a couple. It's something we've been working on over the course of the year having those midfielders rotating through the forward line.

* Smashed Brisbane in the clearances. A credit to Brendon Lade and Danny Daly. Clearances were a weakness last year and now they are a strength of ours. We won by 15-16 in that bracket today. Pleased with how that's going. Dimma thought Ivan moved as freely as he has for a while. The form of Deledio continued on again; fantastic job last week and continued that form this week which was good.

* What does this tell you about the attitude of the group with finals fading? ... Dimma chipped in with "still a chance, still a chance". We spoke about this after the game. There's one things I can never question about this group and that is they give effort. Regardless of the result I can always say we gave effort and that's something as coach he is proud of. Chris Newman leads from the front in that area as does guys like Griggy. It's one thing we can never question.

Pain was Tigers' gain: Hardwick
By Michael Whiting

RELIEVED Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers implemented the lessons learned from a horror past month when they were challenged in the final quarter of Saturday night's win over the Brisbane Lions.

Following three losses by less than a kick to Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Carlton in successive weeks, Richmond was on the way to blowing another win at the Gabba before steadying.

Hardwick watched a 46-point lead evaporate to 14 points at the 10-minute mark of the final term.

But there would be no repeat of past misdemeanours as the Tigers slammed on six successive goals to march to victory.

"We just stopped running, we stopped playing the way we wanted to play," Hardwick said.

"We were a bit cautious with the ball, we took four or five marks in that period but no overlap [run].

"The guys started to get the message across and started to move the ball a bit freer after we rectified that."

Hardwick said it was a simple case of one team trying to save the game and another team trying to win it.

Once the Tigers began attacking again, the gate was shut.

"There's no doubt we've learned some lessons over the last month of footy and the positive is we'll bounce back and keep trying to get better," Hardwick said.

"I thought we always controlled the game.

"They got a couple of centre bounce goals, they kicked two in the last quarter, which gets the game closer, but I was really pleased to see the guys fight the game out.

"The one thing I can say about this team is … they give effort. Regardless of the result, I can always say their effort's there and that's something that I'm proud of as a coach. It's the one thing we can never actually question."

The Richmond onball division smashed the Lions for most of the night, with 58 more total disposals and a telling differential of plus-14 in the clearances.

Ivan Maric and Trent Cotchin had seven clearances each, Reece Conca and Shane Tuck six each and Brett Deledio five, in a first-rate display.

"Clearances were probably a weakness last year, [and] this year they've become a strength," Hardwick said.

"I'm really pleased with the way that's going. I thought Ivan moved as free as he has and the form of Deledio has continued again. He did a fantastic job last week and this week again, to continue his form, has been really good.

If this is the reason than it makes some sense.

But do we really believe that recruiters are that stupid?
.. Besides ours of course.  :shh

geez we agree for once. could not work out why griffiths went of.
and the same old problem. just having the mcguanes whites jacksons etc etc etc on the list means the tempation to play them instead of kids remains.
we all know finals is not a realistic aim now and kids should be taking precedence over what are long term mediocre players. yes this is one area hardwick deserves criticism imo.

After the freo loss it was evident that this year was dead.
Might as well put jack on ice or in surgery too if he needs it. Pointless playing him till the end of season if this is what is going to happen anyway.

still think if you are going to play as many kids as possible you still need to have good structures and enough experienced players around them. i dont see the point in sending them out just to get smashed that does noone any good. so it is a balancing act and without good depth a very tough thing to do.

the start of the season and list kpis said we would not make finals they still say it. up to freo we were relatively injury free we were always going to nose dive when injuries and suspensions hit. ya know as far as injury goes we have had damn good run again this yr. the injury front highlights just how shallow the list is atm.

the simple truth is its hardwicks job to aim for finals thats every coaches job.  but aiming and actually having realistic expectations is another. while mathmatically possible finals may remain an aim but  most certainly are not a realistic expectation.as such he have one eye firmly on the long term.
from the very start of the yr imo the main focus like 2011 should have been getting games into younger players.i have been in heated debate all yr over this  i come to this conclusion because it  is where the list kpis lead us.
