Pain was Tigers' gain: HardwickBy Michael Whiting
10:14 PM Sat 04 Aug, 2012 RELIEVED Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the Tigers implemented the lessons learned from a horror past month when they were challenged in the final quarter of Saturday night's win over the Brisbane Lions.
Following three losses by less than a kick to Gold Coast, North Melbourne and Carlton in successive weeks, Richmond was on the way to blowing another win at the Gabba before steadying.
Hardwick watched a 46-point lead evaporate to 14 points at the 10-minute mark of the final term.
But there would be no repeat of past misdemeanours as the Tigers slammed on six successive goals to march to victory.
"We just stopped running, we stopped playing the way we wanted to play," Hardwick said.
"We were a bit cautious with the ball, we took four or five marks in that period but no overlap [run].
"The guys started to get the message across and started to move the ball a bit freer after we rectified that."
Hardwick said it was a simple case of one team trying to save the game and another team trying to win it.
Once the Tigers began attacking again, the gate was shut.
"There's no doubt we've learned some lessons over the last month of footy and the positive is we'll bounce back and keep trying to get better," Hardwick said.
"I thought we always controlled the game.
"They got a couple of centre bounce goals, they kicked two in the last quarter, which gets the game closer, but I was really pleased to see the guys fight the game out.
"The one thing I can say about this team is … they give effort. Regardless of the result, I can always say their effort's there and that's something that I'm proud of as a coach. It's the one thing we can never actually question."
The Richmond onball division smashed the Lions for most of the night, with 58 more total disposals and a telling differential of plus-14 in the clearances.
Ivan Maric and Trent Cotchin had seven clearances each, Reece Conca and Shane Tuck six each and Brett Deledio five, in a first-rate display.
"Clearances were probably a weakness last year, [and] this year they've become a strength," Hardwick said.
"I'm really pleased with the way that's going. I thought Ivan moved as free as he has and the form of Deledio has continued again. He did a fantastic job last week and this week again, to continue his form, has been really good.
