Coke gives lifelong Richmond supporter chance to make her mark on favorite club
10:28:55 AM Thu 5 May, 2005

When 28 year old Mary Daffey bought a diet Coke at the recent Richmond v Hawthorn match she had no idea the label on the bottle would land her a dream prize and $50,000 for her beloved Tigers.

Not only did Richmond win the match that day, but Mary went home and entered the unique number on her diet Coke in the Coke Make Your Mark promotion to win herself one of three AFL Club Sponsorship Packages and a Performance Grant for her favourite AFL Club.

Richmond are doubly lucky as two club supporters won major prizes in the Coke Make Your Mark promotion, so they will receive two $50,000 Performance Grants – a total of $100,000 to use towards club services and equipment to achieve the greatest performance of the team and individual players.

Mary and fellow Coke Make Your Mark winner Anna Barnes will enjoy a season to remember as they each receive a once-in-a-lifetime experience which includes:

Two season membership passes including a reserve seat at every home and away game plus travel and accommodation.

Entry to the team room before a match.

A chance to meet the captain and coach.

A seat on the sidelines at a Richmond training session.

Attendance at a club function and the chance to chat to senior officials.

Tickets to the Best & Fairest dinner.

A signed Richmond jumper.

A full supporters’ pack of Richmond gear.

$5,000 cash.

Two tickets to the AFL Grand Final 2005 and more.

“I thought I’d enter the Coke Make Your Mark competition to see if I could win my brother one of the Sherrin footballs up for grabs – I never even thought about the big prize but I’m thrilled to bits,” said an elated Mary.

The prize will add to a great family tradition of support for the Tigers. Mary’s great grandfather was a foundation member of the Richmond Football Club and her entire family are Richmond fanatics.

Mary has been to five out of six Richmond matches so far this year and despite an upcoming holiday interrupting her footy schedule, she’s looking forward to getting home to enjoy the prize and to be at every Richmond game for the rest of the season.

Mary says her favourite player is No 39 Andrew Kellaway.

“He has a good work ethic – he’s a bit of a workhorse and takes very courageous marks,” she says.

And her favourite Richmond moment?

“Like everyone, it would have to be the 1995 final against Essendon when we were down by 31 points at halftime and came back to win by 13 points,” says Mary, who was at the game with her family.

“I also remember going to a Richmond v Essendon match in London when I was living and working there a few years ago and it was a great chance to watch some football and enjoy a pie.”

Mary says she has “about 50” new best friends since winning the Coke Make Your Mark competition and is pleased to be able to help her favourite club with the Performance Grant.

“I think the timing of this windfall is good for Richmond and I know they’ll be able to put it to good use,” she said.

Richmond Football Club CEO Steven Wright said the club was thrilled for its winning fans.

“Its fantastic to have the support of our fans and of partners such as Coca-Cola who’s innovative approach to partnering with AFL has given football fans new ways to really feel involved with the game and their favourite teams,” Wright said.

"We will put the money to good use in continuing to improve our facilities and high performance equipment at Punt Road."

The Coke Make Your Mark website www.cokemakeyourmark.com.au) has become the hottest online forum for footy fans to voice their opinion of what’s happening in AFL. Are we being especially lucky this year? A major sponsor quits yet we gain $300,000 within 2 weeks on the deal from AFG jumping on board and now this  :thumbsup.

Maybe the players should just drink Coke before the game and at half time instead of No Doze - might land us some more cash.

How ironic that someone with the name Daffey has contributed $50k to the club, while the other Daffy just reaped the rewards of mediocracy from the club?

Rock on!

Mary probably needed the 50 grand more than the club does.
