Summary

* First 3 quarters outstanding. Played the way we wanted them to play. Couldn't make the most of it on the scoreboard kicking it between the big sticks. Last quarter "got a bit hectic". Having said that boys were out on their feet towards the end and to get that result against a side like Carlton whom have had the wood on us is a good result.

* Massive confidence boost. Boys know they can close out close games. We'd like to win easier but having said that we won close games during the preseason and we won another one last night which will help the boys if we get in that situation again but hopefully we don't get in that situation again. This week at training there'll be plenty of goalkicking practice though.

* Massive sigh of relief for the boys to win and we are looking forward now to next week. There was a long build up to the Carlton game and we didn't build it up as much as the media did. We know it's just another game and not the be all and end all for the season; but to get that result and work as hard as they did and no injuries is a great result. Looking forward to St Kilda game on Friday night and building some momentum.

* Need to be getting better in decision making. We are not that young and inexperienced anymore. 60-80 games now. Preseason looked at game scenarios. Need guys to take control on the field as it takes a while for a runner to get a message out there and by then the field situation may have changed. Give them answers at training and let them come up with solutions on the field so they can take action when needed during a game.

* Vickery - hit the nail on the head - he is a 22 y.o. KPP, one of the hardest posiiton to play and talls often take time to come into their own. Ty had a breakout year in 2011 kicking 30 goals; injury problems last year which have been fixed up. He's had a massive preseason and gained confidence from it and from the game he played last night. So we are excited. We know he'll have ups and downs. Plays forward and can give Maric a chop out in the ruck. So plays important roles for us. Supporters need to know he'll have a couple up and down years before he reaches that consistency and becomes a very good AFL footballer.

* In the past we would've played all our new recruits and get games into them. Now at a stage where games aren't given away. We now have some depth. There's a contest for spots. We have Knights, Vlastuin, Grimes and Foley to come in over the season which will happen as it's a long year and you get injuries and fluctations in form. We just need for them to play their role and do what they need to do and they could play a number of games. It's good to be around the club as we have a lot of depth but in saying that there's going to be a few disappointed people each week. That's a sign of a good club and we're excited about that as should be our supporters.

Richmond assistant coach Brendon Lade says Tyrone Vickery on track to be AFL star

RICHMOND assistant coach Brendan Lade has praised Tyrone Vickery’s contribution and his side’s ability to cope under pressure in its five point victory over Carlton last night.

The Tigers’ ruck and stoppages coach said Vickery still had plenty of room for improvement on his nine-mark, three-goal performance.

“He had some injury concerns last year and obviously we got him fixed up and he’s had a massive pre-season, he got a lot of confidence out of our pre-season and the game he played last night," Lade said on SEN.

“We’re really excited … hopefully the supporters understand that he’s going to be up and down for a few more years yet before he gets that real consistency as a top AFL player."

The 22-year-old key-position player was an imposing presence in the Tigers’ forward line structure, combining with fellow talls Jack Riewoldt and Luke McGuane to stretch the Blues’ defence.

After leading Carlton by 36 points at three-quarter time, Richmond survived a five-goal-to-none onslaught to win by five points.

Lade applauded his sides’ ability to weather the storm in the dying stages.

“It’s a massive confidence boost for the boys, and to know that they can close out games towards the end of games … we’re (the coaches) were pretty proud of the boys,” he said.

“The boys were out on their feet towards the end and to get that result against a quality side like Carlton – a team that has had the wood over us – is a big result for the boys and the club."

Lade said there was greater emphasis in pre-season training on coaching players to learn to handle the heat in high-pressure situations.

“We’re trying to give them a lot more answers in training … it makes our job a lot easier as coaches and gives them (the players) a bit of relief as well if they know how to fix the problems out on the field,” he said.

The Tigers came away injury-free from last night’s clash, and are looking forward to building on a positive start to the season.

“They (the players) were pumped to get the win and just real happy to get onto next week because this game’s been coming for a while,” Lade said.

“To get that result and to work as hard as they did and to come away from the game with no injuries was a good result and we look forward to going against St Kilda and hopefully build some momentum going into the season.”

The Tigers take on the Saints next Friday night at the MCG.

Only read the start of the article but it doesn't seem to have a quote where Lade says he'll be an AFL star.  :whistle
