Finals locked in but wasteful Tigers have Hardwick worried

RICHMOND all but guaranteed its first finals appearance since 2001 on Saturday, but coach Damien Hardwick was not in the mood to celebrate after the Tigers' 23-point win over the Brisbane Lions.

With 13 wins for the year and Greater Western Sydney to come in round 22, the Tigers' September drought can be declared over.

But after conceding seven of the game's last 10 goals to the plucky Lions at the MCG, Hardwick wasn't prepared to look forward to finals.

"As funny as it is, I'm not overly happy and we've won by 23 points," he said.

"Ask me how that was two years ago, [I would] walk in with a big smile.

"We have three rounds to go, so we'll just worry about [finals] when we get there.

The Tigers didn't take their chances on Saturday, kicking a wasteful 5.5 in a dominant second term before losing the third (in which they were goalless) and fourth quarters.

Jack Riewoldt kicked 1.4 including the sealer, while Luke McGuane kicked 3.2 in the first half but was scoreless thereafter.

"I don't know what our set-shot conversion was today, but I guarantee you it wasn't great, so we'll be doing some work on that this week," Hardwick said.

"We controlled the game - the possession count (424-296), the contested ball (141-115), all those sorts of stats were heavily in our favour.

"Unfortunately in this game the way it is at the moment, you only get a certain number of shots.

"We didn't have a great day from a forward-line point of view."

Hardwick praised captain Trent Cotchin, who drew run-with specialist Andrew Raines in the second quarter but still finished with 30 possessions, seven inside 50s and seven clearances.

"He started off a little bit slow [this year], but he's certainly worked his way back to the form he had last year, which has been impressive," the coach said.

"Raines did a pretty good job early in the second quarter, but then he [Cotchin] just wills himself into the contest.

"He's one of those guys, a bit like Jobe Watson, who's incredibly hard to tag."

Small forward Jake King appears likely to return from a hamstring injury through the VFL next weekend after three weeks on the sidelines.

Midfielder Shane Edwards, who was withdrawn from the squad on Friday with hamstring tightness, should be available against Carlton on Saturday.

Chris Newman was hampered by a minor ankle injury on Saturday, but should also be fit to face the Blues.

He forgot a quote..

"The match committee & I would like to apologize to the Richmond faithful for the stupid selection of Robin Nanas into the team. I can assure you all it will NEVER happen again. We've moved on from that sort of player."

What does he mean when he thinks Robin will be a good player for us next year? He mentioned that in the press conference!!!

Maybe he means that as an opposition player he will actually gift us more goals than he did when he played for us.
I can distinctly remember atleast one today;  His dinky forward 50 entry that dribbled along the ground and what should've been a certain goal to us went straight back over his head.

Tigers' lapse irks Hardwick

This wasn't the way Richmond had hoped to rubber-stamp its first finals appearance in 12 years, and coach Damien Hardwick knew the Tigers could not afford such lapses in September after they notched an uninspiring but significant win over the Brisbane Lions.

Thirteen wins - with games against Carlton, Greater Western Sydney and Essendon to come - is almost certainly enough to all but guarantee Richmond will play finals for the third time in 31 years.

But in stark contrast to last weekend's rousing victory over ladder leader Hawthorn, the Tigers were less than impressive, enduring a goalless third term and struggling to assert their dominance on the scoreboard.

Nor was the 23-point win the percentage-booster the Tigers had hoped for.

Hardwick was not prepared to bandy around talk of finals. ''No, we just work our way through the season. The season is still alive. We've got three rounds to go so we will worry about that when we get there,'' said the coach, who was relaxed by the end of the game despite getting cranky as a 45-point lead evaporated to 16 points with seven minutes left.

''I thought we controlled the game, the possession count, the contested ball, all those stats were heavily in our favour. We just didn't make the most of our opportunities when we went inside 50, which was difficult with the amount of numbers that were down there.

''The good thing about it is we're winning games. As funny as it is, I'm not overly happy [with the performance against Brisbane] and we've won by 23 points. Ask me how that was two years ago. I'm walking in with a big smile.''

Hardwick added that the Tigers could not afford to relax or rest players in the lead-up to the finals. ''That [finals talk] is for you guys to worry about. We just worry about getting our game better.

''We know we've got a lot of upside, emphasised by this guy [Reece Conca] who plays an outstanding first half, second half he can improve upon. We have got to make sure we iron those inconsistencies out because we can't afford to have lapses in a game like we did today.

''We still want to get up playing a consistent brand of footy and we weren't overly happy with some patches today.

''We're probably not at the stage of resting players, we've still got our best footy in front of us as far as we're concerned and [need] to make sure we get the results we're after.''

Captain Trent Cotchin was best on ground, overcoming Andrew Raines' tag to collect 30 possessions, while Coleman Medal contender Jack Riewoldt kicked his only goal in the dying minutes of the match to put the result beyond doubt, but missed four other shots at goal.

''He looked lively early, just couldn't get the scoreboard result he was after, score assist-wise I think he was OK. It wasn't one of his better games,'' Hardwick said of Riewoldt.

Former captain Chris Newman, who is closing in on his first final after 232 games, rolled his ankle but played out the match and the club said it was not serious.

The Lions, who had won four of their past five games, struggled without Jonathan Brown and Simon Black, but fought back after half-time.

''They owned it and we didn't,'' said coach Michael Voss. ''Despite all that, with five or six minutes to go we were in with a shot. The guys' fight after half-time was pretty good but we're not making the most of our starts and we have got to be better than that to improve.''

Richmond is set to make its first September appearance in 12 years

RICHMOND'S long journey back to legitimate finals contender was etched on the face of coach Damien Hardwick.

The Tigers' 23-point triumph over a galant Brisbane at the MCG yesterday all but secured the long-suffering club its first September appearance in 12 years.

But the fact Hardwick entered the press conference in the bowels of the MCG stony-faced only served to reinforce the change of mindset at an organisation with grander plans.

"As funny as it is, I'm not overly happy and we've won by 24 points. Ask me how that was two years ago; I'd be walking in here with a big smile,'' Hardwick said.

Still, Hardwick couldn't bring himself to talk about finals.

"We just work our way through the season. The season is still alive and we've got three rounds to go. We'll just worry about (finals) when we get there,'' he said.

"We'll work through a block of four games, there's obviously three to go in that block and we'll worry about the result when we come to it. The main thing is we're winning games.''

Asked if he had least took some satisfaction from the fact his team will finally compete at the business end of the season, Hardwick only said: "That's for you guys to write about, we just worry about getting our game better.

"We know we've got a lot of upside still. We've just got to make sure we iron those consistencies out because we can't afford to have lapses like we did today.''

Richmond lead by 46 points early in the third quarter, but were then put under the hammer by a resurgent Brisbane who got to within 16 points with nearly 10 minutes to play.

But Hardwick said he had no issue with his side's ability to play tempo footy.

"You look at the scores and I think we kicked 3.4 and they kicked 4.1 (in the last quarter),'' he said.

"I think we always had control of the game, we just didn't make the most of our scoring shots. I don't know what our set shot conversion was today, but I guarantee it wasn't great so we'll be doing some work on that next week.

"It was one of those things. I thought we controlled the game. The possession count, contested ball and all that were heavily in our favour and we just didn't make the most of our opportunities inside 50, which was difficult with the amount of numbers down there.

"Unfortunately in this game, the way it is at the moment, you only get a certain amount of shots and if you don't take yours it certainly goes back the other end and they kicked some great goals.''

Lions coach Michael Voss praised his side's never-say-die attitude, but admitted he couldn't put a finger on his side's slow starts.

"It's a weekly ask. We've certainly looked at all different methods of how we start the game, we've explored different ways of keeping the scoreboard in check, but it gets away from us and that's when you end up chasing,'' Voss said.

"I've come to expect that from our group  they know how to rally and how to pull things together, but we've obviously just got to set the game up better so we give ourselves an opportunity from the start.''

Brisbane kicked seven goals to three after half-time, mounting a charge without Brent Moloney, who was subbed out with hamstring tightness just before the main break.
