Brian Royal on Club Corner
« on: June 14, 2005, 05:13:02 AM »
Brian Royal was on club corner last night and gave a very brief review of each player who's played senior footy this year:

Bowden - very happy with Joel.

Brown - Sadly out for the year.

Cambo - Basically doing his job coming off the bench. His leadership important for the younger guys. Good enough to play on and would like him to. Of course the coaching staff will analyse and judge the list at the end of the season.

Chaffey - He's been used mainly as a run with type. Happy with him as he listens and learns and is working hard on improving his delivery.

Cogs - Outstanding. In our top 2-3.

Deledio - Has handled stepping up to AFL footy well. Still learning to work harder.

Gas - Excluding the game against the Roos he's been terrific. Good leader.

Graham - Used as a spare defender on the bench. Terrific as a "coach" for our younger guys
particularly Thursfield and Moore.

Hall - Much maligned. Probably playing out of his weight division as he isn't a KPP but circumstances meant we needed him to play there.

Hartigan - Season interrupted due to injury. His run is very important to us.

Hilton - 2nd half of the year will decide hs career. Against the Eagles did the job asked of him. Got a goal and would have had another if Joel didn't play on. Is ok to play this week.

Hyde - Preseason and early season form sensational until copping a fractured skull. Royal said he'd be surprised not to see him back this week.

Jackson - Needs alot of coaching but is willing to learn.

Johnson - Mr Reliable. Always can count on him for that 7/10 performance. As captain he is hurting from our recent losses. He knows what it takes to get to the top of the mountain.

Kellaway - Like Gas been very good. Both defensively and counterattacking.

Knobel - Been ok. We want our ruckmen to play a certain way and he hasn't had the ruck coaching needed until this year.

Krakouer - Been used mainly up forward this year. As long as he's having shots (of target unfortunately Sunday) and puts defensive pressure will stay in the side. They would like to use him more in the midfield.

Meyer - Still learning. Like Hartigan is learning to work harder. Consistently hits targets at training.

Newman - Good (top 6). Due to circumstances needs to play back but would love to have him in the midfield.

Pattison - Good at Coburg but body needs to mature to play AFL. Stafford's replacement.

Pettifer - Good and reliable skills.

Raines - Splitting image of Geoff. Very good and consistent form at Coburg but still needs to work on his delivery.

Richo - Struggling with a serious knee injury the past month or so. He's still working hard.

Roach - Preseason outstanding but early season form not great.

Schulz - Ankle injury has limited his season. Preseason pretty good. Last 2 weeks at Coburg very good. Sarge needs to work harder like many of our younger guys. He's suffering no scars from the TAC/DD incident.

Simmonds - Up and down year and he himself would be first to say he isn't overly happy with his form. When he's been good we've won. Freo weight program to make him purely a power forward has affected his ability to run all day as a ruck/forward. We are working over the next 12 months to lighting him up but need to do it slowly so he doesn't lose his strength.

Stafford - Unfortunately as a ruckman he copped an ankle injury and that's made it hard for him. He's still not completely right but hopefully after the midseason break he'll be fine.

Tambling - His body struggled with the extra workload at AFL level. Now a combination of him and us understanding his body.

Tivs - We're working hard with him to be a running player. We need to help him work through his deficencies.

Tuck - Rapted. Will only get better.

Foley - Determined. He'll be back shortly.

Interesting point BR made a point about some of the young players, where he said some were still to learn how hard they have to work on the training track and in a game.

Tough juggling act.  On the one hand you want to give these young players a go, but at the same time you don’t want them to have it too easy, simply because circumstances allow them to get a game ahead of schedule.

I listened to it, was it me or is Royal not a very big fan of Jackson and Schulz?

I forgot to add Choco was asked about building up our younger guys and he agreed mentioning Brisbane and the Eagles as having big bodies. He said we have a different weight program this year to make us stronger over the next 18 months.

I listened to it, was it me or is Royal not a very big fan of Jackson and Schulz?

Yeah Razor I was surprised with his specific criticism of Daniel when other (senior) guys weren't judged so harshly IMO. A good hard work ethic appeared to come before everything else. Fair enough as well.
