Nathan Thompson
« on: May 25, 2004, 10:49:01 PM »
I hope there isn't a media circus over Nathan Thompson tomorrow, and that he can make his statement about his depression, and leave him alone.

Don't want to see great headlines across the front and back pages of the papers analysing and dissecting his life.  I just hope the media let him heal without interference.

Being a fellow sufferer in the past - amongst thousands and thousands of people in the same boat - people just need their space.

Good luck Nathan.

Well put Froars.

I haven't read today's papers.

But I'd like to know the journalist who named him - very poor indeed.

I saw Channel 7's news last night and Craig Hutchinson say that he had been asked not to reveal the name because it was not helpful to the person's condition and he had agreed.

Let the man make his statement and then let him get on with getting better. Nathan Thompson is showing incredible courage by coming forward.

It can be turned into a good thing if they discuss the issue broadly, but if they get personal about Nathan's life and what he's going through, and all the garbage that will be brought up, then i fear that could do him no good at all.  But the issue is a common one and one that's misunderstood within the community, so i think it's good in a way to have an issue like discussed and may help other people who suffer get something out of it.

Well said froars.

But I'd like to know the journalist who named him - very poor indeed.

I think it might have been Tony Jones (that's who they mentioned on SEN this morning). Agree WP very poor form.

Yes I read on BF that it was Tony Jones.

Pathetic - I wonder what spin the Head Meister Eddie will put on it on Thursday

The kids got my support as I akso suffered from the same thing
although it was only for about 8 months.
As much as they prescribe you Xanax and Prozac
the only real way out is to change your outlook on life altogether
which can be hard when u r in the public eye and even then
you run the chance of slipping back into anxiety attacks.
It's a cold ,dark lonely place that's 4 sure and all the love in the world
can't change that.

Hang in there Nathan. ;)

Sorry to hear you had it too Ox - is a very debilitating thing that you want to change desperately but nothing happens.  And then all of a sudden something happens and you start to get better.  I can't say i'm out of it totally yet, but well on the way.  The worst thing about it was the loss of interest in everything - going to the footy, reading, and just concentrating is what i found the hardest.  Couldn't focus on a darn thing for more than 5 minutes.  I sometimes left games of footy in the first quarter lol.

Glad the footy show treated the issue seriously tonight.  It's not about people feeling sorry for themselves and just being misery gutses.  It is deeper than that and can affect anyone at any time in their lives.  Having good people around you who have an understanding that you don't do it for "attention" goes a long way.

Well done Footy Show, Akermanis and everyone on the show - well done.
