We become a rabble when we stop running
« on: July 03, 2005, 04:51:09 AM »
I'm sick of the media going on about why the Swans didn't play the whole game like they did in the last quarter. The only reason why they were able to almost run over us was we stopped running and applying pressure after about the 20 minute mark of the 3rd quarter  :banghead. Before that they weren't allowed to get loose as we nailed them in gangtackles and forced errors. From late in the 3rd quarter on our midfield played as though they had super glue on their studs so our defenders had to stop and go wide to the boundary or long to at best 50/50 contests. If we don't run and create space as a team for each other we (and any side for that matter) get smashed. Simple as that!  :banghead

I'm relieved we won and happy with the intensity and hunger in the first two and a half quarters (wasted chances in the first with handgrenade handball :scream). But those last 40 minutes were a disgrace apart from 2-3 brave efforts that in the end just saved our bacon >:(. 45 points up and in complete control and we almost throw it away conceding the last 7 goals because we stop working hard to get first to the footy and stopped running to support each other. Just 3 inside 50's and 2 shots on goal in 25 minutes of footy says it all :help. It's round 14. They know what Terry wants from them by now even if we don't yet have the skills to execute the gameplan properly.

What's costly is we blew a chance to jump over the Swans by percentage on the ladder.

Simmonds is one who noteably slowed down towards the end of the third quarter.
I noticed early in the game that he is starting to lose that muscle bound look about the thighs( sorry about that julz) perhaps this is part of the transition from the overdevelopement from his freo days!!

Simmonds looked like he was sweating like a big in the ruck contests, looked absolutely stuffed.

Obviously his muscle/fitness situation is far from sorted out.

I could sort that out ;)

As for running, the best example was that wonderful spurt from Deledio - he was like Forest Gump - just kept running.  And it resulted in a Richo goal :thumbsup

I'll take the win but good teams don't lose games when they are 7 goals up. they also don't allow teams to get back into games - they put them away

Tezza said it players tried to save the game rather doing what had got them up by 7 goals - attacking.

As for the Swans - they are stupid! :banghead :banghead and play crap football (it aint often I agree with Andy Demetriou)

For 2 and half quarters they flooded, chipped around and went around in circles when they finally decided to run the ball and kick it longer they were competitive. It is an absolute relief that we only play them once this season (H&A of course ;D) becuase I promise you I wont be watching them again - they are the pits

The Crows and Saints did the same thing as us today. It must have been the weekend for it  ???.

If we got two lots of 4 points a season from putting up with 6 hours a year of that garbage from Sydney then it doesn't sound too bad a deal  ;). It's far worse watching us play that way when we stop following Wallace's gameplan  :scream.

The swannies are doing the same thing they did under Eade - flooding to pinch wins. It'll get them into the finals but they'll just be making up the numbers. They need to rebuild but the AFL don't want the Swans falling to the bottom of the ladder given more Sydneysiders watch SBS than Swans games.
