Richmond has suffered an 18-point loss on the road against the Gold Coast to kick off the 2014 season.

The Tigers hit the front early in the last quarter, but the Suns hit back with four straight goals to run away with the game.

It was the Gold Coast’s third victory from four games against the Tigers, with the two previous wins coming at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. Saturday night's clash was the first time Gold Coast had hosted Richmond at Metricon Stadium.

Richmond had its chances and had just as much of the play, but was unable to break free of the Suns' shackles.

Trent Cotchin was sublime in defeat, leading from the front with 38 disposals, while Brett Deledio had 33 and Shaun Grigg 30.

Gold Coast's midfielders also found plenty of the ball, led by Gary Ablett's 41 disposals, six clearances and two goals.

Ty Vickery was the lone multiple goalkicker for Richmond with two.

The Tigers face Carlton at the MCG in Round 2, on Friday, March 27.

Here come the expansion clubs. After Greater Western Sydney's astonishing upset of the Sydney Swans, the match between Gold Coast and Richmond was delayed by 15 minutes, due to the storm in the harbour city and the demands of television.

But where no one predicted the Giants' victory, the Suns' performance to dispose of another team with an eye on the finals, Richmond, had an air of inevitability about it. Can the Suns make the finals? It's hard to see why not … they were blazing.

The Suns effectively won this match in two red-hot bursts in the first and last quarters that destroyed the fancied Tigers. Gary Ablett added the icing, kicking his second goal with his 40th disposal of the night.

Ablett, of course, is still Ablett. But the gap is closing between the captain and his teammates. Dion Prestia, David Swallow and Michael Rischitelli were all outstanding. Even Danny Stanley, a player who's battled extremely hard to make it in the AFL, was among the best in the first half.

The game started at warp speed, Nick Vlastuin kicking an excellent goal on the run that finished a smart chain of handballs from the Tigers. The reply from the Suns, however, was swift and it was awesome. Prestia was first in, swooping on a loose ball in the goal square after Charlie Dixon buried David Astbury in a tackle.

Tom Lynch, the Suns' missing link for much of last year, then marked strongly and found Sam Day alone, also in the goal square. Ablett then streamed out of the centre from the next bounce before giving the ball to Stanley, who nailed the shot from beyond 50.

And finally, Jaeger O'Meara attacked a contest on the wing, snatched the ball with one hand from in front of an opponent coming the other way, and ran away to pot the Suns' fourth from close to the boundary line. All this in 10 minutes of skilled football.

Eight goals were kicked in the opening term, but just five followed in the next two as Richmond slowed the game down. In between, the Suns were unfortunate to lose debutant Jack Martin to a shoulder injury, and Dixon to concussion.

Slowly, though, the Tigers were working their way back into the match, with five out of seven goals either side of half-time bring the game back to almost level pegging.

Six minutes into the last quarter, it looked like the dam wall might finally burst. Tyrone Vickery slapped the ball down to Dustin Martin, who snapped over his shoulder to put the Tigers in front for the first time since the first minute.

But the reply, again, was emphatic. David Swallow broke a tackle at half-back before sprinting clear, propping, then driving the ball long to Lynch, who delivered. Dion Prestia, down the other wing, ran a couple of miles (between bounces) to find Day with another contested mark and goal.

These are the two forwards the Suns have been waiting on for years to click. Lynch is a prodigious talent but has spent more time off the ground than on it, while it's been unclear whether Day would be resettled in defence.

And Swallow, the Suns' first No. 1 draft pick, is starting to play to that billing. Ferocious at the contest and now playing a more attacking role, he all but put the match away for the Suns after intercepting a kick-in, then putting the ball back over the umpire's head.

Lynch added another for good measure. Game over.

Gary Ablett stars with 41 disposals as Gold Coast Suns defeat Richmond

GOLD Coast showed true grit and determination on a red-letter day for expansion clubs to record a courageous 18-point win over Richmond.

Just hours after GWS beat Sydney in a famous victory, the Suns played the last two quarters with just two men on their bench but found a way to triumph over last year’s finalists.

Gold Coast lost boom teenager Jack Martin (shoulder) in the first quarter while power forward Charlie Dixon (concussion) did not take to the field after halftime to leave the Suns undermanned and under the pump from the surging Tigers.

Richmond hit the lead early in the fourth quarter with a brilliant Dustin Martin snap.

But the Suns refused to lie down and die and two goals to Tom Lynch and majors to Sam Day and David Swallow brought the home side roaring back in front of 19,425 spectators.

Gary Ablett was his brilliant self with two goals — including the match-sealer — and 41 disposals and six clearances.

David Swallow, Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara, Jarrod Harbrow and Michael Rischitelli also showcased the enviable midfield depth at the Suns by playing significant hands in the win.

In four trips to Queensland to take on the Suns, Richmond has returned to Punt Rd with three losses.

Tigers captain Trent Cotchin (37 disposals) and Brett Deledio (33 disposals) did not deserve to be on the beaten side as they fought the good fight all night but the momentum of the Suns in the final quarter was irresistible.

The result will cap a big week for the Suns who will confirm a two-year contract extension for senior coach Guy McKenna in the coming days.

However, the highly anticipated debut of Gold Coast boom teenager Jack Martin fell as flat as a pancake when he was forced from the field after just 13 minutes with a shoulder injury.

Martin damaged his left AC joint as he dived for a mark and appeared in considerable trouble as he writhed in pain on the Metricon Stadium turf.

He was rushed straight up the race for urgent medical attention and was subbed out of the game soon after.

Martin cut a forlorn figure as he reappeared on the Suns bench with a huge icepack on his left shoulder that could keep him sidelined anywhere from two to six weeks.

Richmond got off to flying start with a superb team goal finished by Nick Vlastuin but it was all the Suns after that with a scorching 10 minute-period that reaped four goals.

O’Meara put up his hand as an early ‘goal of the year’ contender with a stunning individual effort. He picked up a loose ball one handed, evaded a tackle with a swerve and a fend, turned on the afterburners then kicked truly from the tightest of angles.

The Suns led by 15 points at the first break with Ablett and Cotchin going head-to-head in a disposal duel but the Tigers clawed back some ground in the second term to get within seven points of the Gold Coast by the main break.

The frenetic early shootout was replaced by a gritty arm-wrestle in the third quarter as the Tigers took the centre corridor out of play for the Suns.

Ablett kicked the Suns’ only goal for the term but they extended their buffer to 12 points at the last change after also adding six wasteful behinds.

Meanwhile, Suns CEO Travis Auld said McKenna’s two-year contract extension will be signed, sealed and delivered in a matter of days.

“We are in the same spot with all the terms and conditions. It’s pretty much done,” Auld said.

MATCH IN A MINUTE

Q1

An early four-goal blitz established a handy lead for the Suns who played at a breakneck pace, with the only sour note a shoulder injury that forced tyro Jack Martin to be subbed out after just 17min in his AFL debut. Ablett has 13 disposals already but Jack Riewoldt pegged back the margin with a goal after the siren.

Q2

The Tigers got the game back on their terms led by skipper Trent Cotchin, who started to dominate the clearances and kicked a team-lifting goal. Ablett was relatively quiet with eight disposals for the term to finish the half on 21, equal with Tiger Shaun Grigg

Q3

A Ben Griffiths goal in the opening minute cut the margin to a point and the rest of the quarter was an arm-wrestle, with both sides making lots of mistakes with the slippery ball. Ablett was the man to break the deadlock, ending a run of six Gold Coast behinds with a running goal to give the Suns a 12-point lead at the final change.

Q4

Richmond kicked the first two goals of the term and hit the front via a Dustin Martin snap. From then it was all Gold Coast as Ablett, Dion Prestia and David Swallow orchestrated a 10-minute burst that yielded four unanswered goals. Two Tiger majors brought the margin back to 12 points with 4min left but fittingly it was Ablett who iced the game with his 40th disposal.
