----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A career-best haul of 11 goals by Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt has catapulted Richmond to a 113-point win over GWS.

Panned by coach Damien Hardwick for his public criticism of the club, Riewoldt responded in breathtaking style, producing a career-best performance in their 24.10 (154) to 5.11 (41) triumph.

It is just the result Richmond required after a week of intense scrutiny, stemming from a bad loss to Melbourne that left the Tigers in 16th place.

Keeping their season alive as they improved to 3-6, coupled with a significant percentage increase, the Tigers' next seven matches are all in Melbourne, starting with Essendon at the MCG next Saturday night.

Predictably on such a lopsided afternoon, Richmond had winners all over the ground, with Brandon Ellis, Dustin Martin and 200th-gamer Brett Deledio dominating possession.

Shaun Hampson was outstanding in his ruck duel with the returning Shane Mumford for a Tigers side that kicked 12 straight goals before Ty Vickery's behind 13 minutes into the second quarter.

Dylan Shiel (34 disposals, eight tackles, seven clearances) could hold his head high, but there was little else of note for a GWS team that had just five individual goalkickers on one of the more disappointing days in its short history.

The Tigers were on a mission from the opening bounce, slotting set shots from all angles in a stunning eight-goal first quarter.

Riewoldt was unstoppable, already equalling his previous best goal tally for the season when he calmly slotted his fourth just 27 minutes into the match.

The avalanche continued in the second term, with the Tigers adding 6.2 for a 74-point lead against a GWS outfit that managed just one solitary behind for the quarter.

From there, the only real interest was in the final margin and Riewoldt's final haul and while he went without a goal in the fourth quarter, it took none of the gloss from his career day.

Glad Hardwick to his foot out of Riewoldts ass. Would have been uncomfortable.

Go Tigers!

Jack Riewoldt makes a statement with 11 goals as Richmond demolishes GWS
Herald-Sun
May 24, 2014 4:53PM

JACK Riewoldt made his most positive statement of a tumultuous week by kicking a career-best 11 goals for a rejuvenated Richmond on Saturday in a 113-point flogging of Greater Western Sydney.

Riewoldt kicked 11.2 as the Tigers strolled to a 24.10 (154) to 5.11 (41) victory at Spotless Stadium and improved its season record to 3-6.

The Tigers’ spearhead provided the perfect response after coach Damien Hardwick slammed him earlier in the week for saying Richmond had unsuccessfully tried to copy Hawthorn’s game style.

“I was pretty devastated with how it came across. I let the coach down; I let the side down,” Riewoldt said.

“Today I was coming in with the mindset of just trying to pay the faith back in Dimma (Hardwick) and the boys and the footy club.”

Riewoldt, whose previous best haul was 10 against West Coast at the MCG in 2010, kicked four in the first quarter, three in the second, four in the third, before missing his two shots in the last quarter and potentially gave up another goal to skipper Trent Cotchin.

GWS scored little more than half of Riewoldt’s tally as the Giants crashed to a sixth straight loss.

Playing their first game at Spotless Stadium in seven weeks, GWS — which started with the same 2-6 record as Richmond — was on the wrong end of a 100-point plus margin for a second straight game.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said his message to Riewoldt before the game was to improve his chasing and tackling.

“Jack will always play well offensively, I thought his defensive work was very good and he got the reward offensively.”

Hardwick said he was happier the Tigers were able to move the ball quicker as they shredded the Giants in transition.

“The thing we’ve got to do is get a consistent four-quarter effort, which is what we’re looking for.

“I was probably a little disappointed with how the last quarter finished off, but that will give us something to work on this week.”

The Giants again showed alarmingly little fight following a 110-point loss to West Coast in Perth, where Eagles forward Josh Kennedy also kicked 11 goals.

Richmond kicked 13 straight goals after the two teams exchanged the first two majors of the match, with GWS not kicking their second six-pointer until the second minute of the third quarter.

The Tigers’ first 12 scoring shots were goals, as they kicked 8.0 to 1.5 in the first quarter, then doubled their 37-point advantage by halftime after booting 6.2 to 0.1 in the second.

The Giants threatened a revival of sorts when Rhys Palmer and Jeremy Cameron, who started the game down back, kicked successive goals to trim the deficit to 62 early in the third term.

But the Tigers slammed on the next seven goals, four of them to Riewoldt, to swell their buffer to 103 points at the last change.

Even the return of several key players and more than 450 games of AFL experience couldn’t help GWS against a fiercely determined Richmond who revived their season.

With Shaun Hampson dominating the returning Shane Mumford in the ruck and their midfield running riot, Richmond looked more like the side that charged to the finals last year than the insipid outfit of recent weeks.

Richmond dominated despite losing Dan Jackson to an early injury, with substitute Nathan Foley kicking a goal within 30 seconds of coming on to start the second quarter.

Hardwick said he wasn’t sure if Jackson had suffered a corked thigh or a more severe muscle injury.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Richmond's kicking boots were a major issue last weekend when the Tigers could only muster a wasteful 9.20 in a woeful loss to Melbourne. Days later, Jack Riewoldt had an untimely case of foot-in-mouth when he criticised the Tigers' game plan, prompting coach Damien Hardwick, in response, to metaphorically declare he had put his foot up Riewoldt's behind.

Whatever was going on with the Tigers and their feet, the right ingredients were struck against Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Saturday when they did not miss in booting their opening 12 goals, with the Giants managing just one in reply, through the first time and until the 13-minute mark of the second quarter before when Ty Vickery was guilty of a blemish.

That sparked some good-natured jeers from the small group of Tigers supporters, with Vickery able to smile about the matter. That summed up the afternoon for the Tigers, for Vickery often has the look of a man with the world on his shoulders.

The opening dozen included seven from the man-of-the-moment Riewoldt, who did as he pleased on Aiden Corr and later Heath Shaw. The Giants clearly were missing injured defenders Nick Haynes and Phil Davis but, as AFL legend Leigh Matthews pointed out, Leon Cameron's decision to use a zone-off defence, rather than go man-to-man, was questionable.

So, too, was the decision to start All Australian forward Jeremy Cameron on Vickery - the move lasting about 15 minutes.

The Giants had early opportunities but couldn't capitalise. That the Tigers were missing David Astbury, their best defender, made it even more debatable why Cameron was in defence.

Riewoldt, having even resorted to catching public transport to avoid the media scrum through the week, had nothing but a smile through the first half. There were set shots and snaps from either pockets as the Tigers stormed to a 74-point lead by half-time, one which became 113 points by the final siren.

The message Riewoldt received from Hardwick when he went to the bench for a break in the second term was clearly a lot different to what had been said to him on Friday.

"It was a pretty emotional week. I was pretty devastated with how it came across. I let the coach down, I let the side down," Riewoldt said post-match after his career-high 11 goals.

Indeed, after a tumultuous week, Hardwick's message was also well and truly heard by all of his players. They looked to attack and play on - something that has been missing - with the likes of Dustin Martin, Brandon Ellis and Brett Deledio, the latter in his 200th match, finding space, while Matt Thomas was typically strong in the contest and at stoppages.

The Tigers lost the hard-running Daniel Jackson (groin) in the first term, forcing substitute Nathan Foley to be activated. But this didn't matter, for the Tigers maintained their run, with Foley weaving his way through to drill the first goal of the second term.

Often-maligned ruckman Shaun Hampson also had the better of the returning Shane Mumford at centre bounces and around the ground, with the latter clearly in need of a run having not played since round three, while Alex Rance and Troy Chaplin were superb in defence. Key Giants forward Jonathon Patton was held goalless.

Determined to take a stand, the Giants conjured the opening two goals of the third term, but this did not last. When Vickery was left alone in the goal square to mark a quick snap out of traffic by Reece Conca, Matthews, commentating on 3AW, could only describe the overall performance of the Giants' six defenders as the worst he had ever seen by any club.

That feeling may have been shared by many after Riewoldt was allowed to coast to his career-high 11th goal, the milestone coming after a juggling mark in front of Shaw who must be wondering what happened to his life at Collingwood.

Aside from Riewoldt's theatrics, this contest morphed into a bland affair. To his credit, Dylan Shiel worked hard for the Giants but he had little support.

While the Tigers impressed and regained their mojo, it was hard to know what this result really meant. They still have an outside hope of making the finals but that will be clarified in the next month when they face Essendon, North Melbourne, Fremantle and Sydney.
