Hardwick says easy victory has set the standard

WHILE pleased with the thumping win over GWS, Richmond coach Damien Hardwick concedes his team still sits well below where they would like to be.

The Tigers demolished the Giants on Saturday afternoon to arrest a three-game losing streak and put the events of a difficult week behind them.

Led by 11 goals from Jack Riewoldt, who was at the centre of much of the turmoil at Punt Road after criticising his team’s game plan and receiving a stern rebuke from his coach, Richmond cruised home 113-point winners.

Hardwick said his players needed to build on Saturday's efforts and produce a similar performance in the weeks ahead.

"The important thing for us and our players going forward is what we do with this," Hardwick said.

"We know our best footy is good enough. We've just got to make sure we consistently deliver what we put out there today.

The win over the Giants was just the Richmond’s third for the season, leaving the Tigers with much ground to make up if they are to match or exceed last year's run to the preliminary final, let alone make the top eight.

Hardwick said the win was welcome, but fully expected the external scrutiny on the Tigers' underwhelming season so far to remain in place.

"It's nice to win, make no mistake about that, but in the AFL industry you are always under the blowtorch" Hardwick said.

"By no means does one win get us out of the woods.

"We are a long way back from where we want to be so we have got to make sure we work hard, continue to get our players playing a team-orientated brand of footy that delivers the results like today."

  • RWNJ / Leftist Snowflake - depends who you ask....
Best post match comments yet from Hardwick - maybe, just maybe the penny's finally dropped that standards & expectations need to be drasticallly lifted ....if it has then that's the best result from today....otherwise it's about as relevent as our thumping of Fitzroy back in '96.... we'll see...
