Tigers make a splash in wet win over Eagles

RICHMOND has won its fourth straight game, outlasting West Coast by 17 points in a wet-weather slog at Patersons Stadium on Friday night.

The Tigers led at every change to defeat the Eagles in Perth for the second consecutive year, running out 8.11 (59) to 6.6 (42) winners for their seventh victory of the season.

The win could come at a cost for the Tigers after Tyrone Vickery was reported for striking Dean Cox in a ruck contest late in the second quarter.

The Eagles ruckman crumpled to the ground and didn't move after Vickery's right-arm swing hit Cox in the face. Cox, who announced his retirement at the end of the season in the lead-up to Friday night's clash, was substituted out of the game, with Vickery getting plenty of attention from the Eagles' fans for the remainder of the match.

Richmond's win broke a five-game run of the teams alternating wins and losses in their head to head meetings, and improved its record against the Eagles at Patersons Stadium to 4-13.

The Eagles' endeavour was never in question, but their execution let them down in their third consecutive loss at Patersons Stadium, a defeat that almost certainly snuffed out their faint finals hopes.

Richmond was led by Brandon Ellis was 27 possessions, while Dustin Martin's poise in the wet was crucial, the midfielder booting two goals.

Matt Priddis was tireless for the home side with 18 tackles (the most in the AFL this season) and 30 possessions, while Nic Naitanui made a bright start in the ruck and gave his midfielders plenty of opportunity throughout.

Richmond looked to have the game won when Martin nailed a superb snap with three minutes to go in the third term to see the Tigers take a match-high 17-point lead, but the Eagles pressed hard early in the fourth, Jack Darling's second goal narrowing the margin to 10 points and giving the home side hope.

West Coast's forward 50 entries were haphazard in the final 10 minutes, and Richmond sealed the win when Jack Riewoldt goaled after a free kick with four minutes remaining.

Earlier, Richmond took an 11-point advantage into the main break after a first half played in dreadful conditions, Martin's set shot after the siren following a strong mark giving his side their biggest lead of the match to that stage.

A dour slog in the wet exploded into life when Vickery was reported late in the second term.

Cox was substituted out of the game as spot-fires broke out across the ground for the remainder of the quarter, but the Tigers ended the half with all the momentum after Martin's late goal.

Vickery kicked a goal after the siren in the first term for the visitors, seeing the Tigers to a seven-point lead at quarter-time. Richmond bounced back as the rain intensified, taking control after West Coast led midway through the first term through set shots from Darling and Josh Kennedy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Richmond has claimed its fourth straight win, beating West Coast by 17 points at Patersons Stadium on Friday night, but Tigers forward Ty Vickery will dominate all reviews of the round 18 contest.

And it won't be for the crucial two first-half-goals he booted in the 8.11 (59) to 6.6 (42) victory.

Vickery was reported for striking Eagles ruckman Dean Cox. His forearm, thrown during a boundary throw-in, copped Cox high and ended the night, and perhaps prematurely the career, of the six-time All-Australian, who announced his retirement during the week.

It won't help Vickery's defence that Cox lay motionless on the ground for a couple of minutes before being helped from the ground. He was subbed out of the game and had a concussion test, but didn't return.

Pleading accidental contact might be tough too, as Vickery appeared to be retaliating for an incident only moments earlier when Cox struck him in the stomach, and made him keel over.

Good record? Nope! Vickery missed rounds 13 and 14 after being suspended for striking North Melbourne's Michael Firrito during the Roos 28-point round 12 victory. He still has 43.75 carryover points from that incident.

It was the only incident of note during a scrappy opening half that was played mainly in heavy rain.

Atrocious conditions resulted in second-rate skills, as moving the ball forward, by any means possible, became the priority. The game was bogged down by stoppages, with Nic Naitanui having 50 of the Eagles 79 hit-outs, against the Tigers' 39.

Richmond could have led by more than 11 points at half-time though, if it had done better than 2.4 from 14 inside-50 entries in the second term.

But the night was not a good one for key forwards – although Jack Riewoldt's only goal, kicked 24 minutes into the final term, sealed the result for Richmond.

Trent Cotchin's soccer goal in the opening minute of the second half to give the Tigers a 17-point lead, however, was the highlight of the game.

It wasn't the best night for Cotchin, who entered the game in hot form, but while he was restricted to 15 possessions, a lot of what he did was cleaner than most others.

And the Tigers got plenty of run from Dustin Martin, Brett Deledio and Brandon Ellis.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Cox's replacement was 191cm forward Simon Tunbridge – joining Jeremy McGovern, Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling in attack.

Tunbridge was selected as the sub ahead of emergencies Sharrod Wellingham, Josh Hill and Jamie Bennell, all running players. And when he kicked a goal five minutes into the third term, it appeared a good decision. However the home side was top heavy.

As it was, his goal, and Darling's in the final term were the only majors that the Eagles managed in the second half.

Richmond remains in 12th spot on the ladder – two wins behind eighth-placed Collingwood, which plays Adelaide on Saturday.

"He's not good. It wasn't good. He's gone," a fuming Eagles coach Adam Simpson said of Cox at half-time.

At one point, Vickery verbally lashed out at some fans who were abusing him near the Tigers' dugout.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the exchange wasn't ideal, but he understood why Vickery bit back.

"If you've got a couple of lunatics hanging over the fence yelling abuse - I don't know any other profession in the world where you can walk into a bank and start calling them names like that," Hardwick said.

"But it is what it is. I'd prefer it if Ty didn't react to the fans, but it's a volatile game. It's a hard game."

Simpson was still fuming about the Vickery-Cox incident after the match, but refused to be drawn into the controversy.

"It will deal with itself throughout the week," he said.

Richmond stars Brett Deledio, Dustin Martin lead Tigers to victory over West Coast

RICHMOND forward Tyrone Vickery is facing a lengthy suspension after being reported for striking West Coast legend Dean Cox in the Tigers’ fiery 17-point victory at Patersons Stadium.

Richmond’s fourth consecutive win was overshadowed by the drama, as Vickery became the villain of Subiaco after vision was shown of his round-arm fist into Cox’s face late in the second quarter.

Cox, 32, announced during the week that he would retire at the end of the season.

The six-time All-Australian ruckman lay motionless on the ground for an extended period before being helped off and was subbed out of the game.

The incident sparked a furious response from Cox’s teammates, with Eagles forward Mark LeCras having his guernsey shredded in a spirited melee.

Vickery received a vitriolic reception from West Coast supporters sitting near the Richmond dugout when he came to the bench.

Vickery’s stunning hit on Cox came before a boundary throw-in had arrived in the pair’s vicinity and appeared to be in retaliation to an elbow from Cox into his stomach moments before.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson appeared to be angry over the incident in a half-time interview on Channel 7.

“He’s not good so we had to sub him out,” Simpson said.

“He’s gone.”

North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey said the elbow from Cox was no excuse for Vickery’s actions and tipped a suspension of “three weeks plus’’.

“That type of hit from Cox happens all the time and the ball is nowhere in the vicinity,” Carey said.

“That’s a round-arm punch to the jaw. Not a good look and he’s in a lot of trouble.”

Vickery was booed throughout the rest of the game and was heckled by supporters at close range when he came to the bench in the third term.

He served a two-match ban for striking North Melbourne’s Michael Firrito in Round 12.

In torrential rain, Richmond held sway at the stoppages despite Nic Naitanui’s ruck dominance, with Nathan Foley and Anthony Miles excelling in the clinches.

The Tigers led by 11 points at the major break after kicking crucial set shot goals after both the quarter-time and half-time sirens.

When Trent Cotchin defied the conditions to soccer a stunning goal in the first minute of the third term, the visitors were in the box seat.

With Richmond holding a 16 point lead at the final change, Jack Darling’s second goal early in the last quarter gave the Eagles hope.

Jack Riewoldt kicked the Tigers’ only goal of the final term from a close-range free kick to ensure Richmond was safe.

Vickery had earlier kicked two vital goals in the space of five minutes in the opening quarter, with the 200cm forward defying the conditions to make an important contribution.
