2 December, 2014 - 7:12 PMGeelong looks certain to host some of the AFL’s biggest clubs at Simonds Stadium from as early as 2017 after new Premier Daniel Andrews promised to expand the ground’s capacity to more than 40,000.
The Cats will seek AFL approval to host the likes of Richmond, Carlton and Essendon at home for the first time in years thanks to a $70 million package from Labor that will see stages four and five of the ground’s development finished.
Speaking on Sports Today, Mr Andrews said the development would make Simonds Stadium the best regional facility of its kind in Australia.
He also confirmed there would be a public holiday on the day before the AFL grand final next year.
“It’s about finishing what’s been started,” Mr Andrews said.
“It’s good for the Cats, obviously, but it’s good for the Geelong economy, as well.
“I think this will make it the best regional stadium anywhere in the country.
“We’ll make a start on this next year and it will be completed as soon as it possibly can.”
Mr Andrews said the development would also open doors for Geelong to host Twenty 20 cricket, rugby league matches, concerts, as well as more night games for the Cats.
“When you’ve got the best facility in regional Australia it makes sense, doesn’t it?” he said.
Labor has also pledged $31.5 million to Ballarat’s Eureka Stadium, with the Western Bulldogs set to play for premiership points at the ground as soon as 2017.
“If you can create an AFL standard stadium but retain that very special atmosphere of country footy, what a fantastic opportunity that is,” Mr Andrews said.
Victoria’s new Premier also said he was open to discussing the idea of free public transport for those with tickets to AFL games in the city.
“I’m always happy to look at good ideas,” he said.
