Dustin Martin’s haircut: Is his buzz cut to the ‘mohawk mullet’ the right choice?

DUSTIN Martin is good at creating a buzz on and off the field, and this time he’s done it with a buzz cut to his “distinctive” locks. But not everyone’s convinced he’s making good choices.

What was once what some describe as a “mohawk mullet” has been streamlined in time for the new season, pared down into more of an tear-shaped sports strip.

But as the young gun on the cusp of his sixth AFL season continues to develop his game-busting skills, signing a two-year contract extension at Punt Rd, some think he could go further with the crop.

But if the latest cut is aimed at reducing the attention on his locks, it’s not working.

At training today, assistant coach Mark Williams and ruck coach Brendon Lade couldn’t help ruffling the wild child’s mane.

And after a heavy off-season partying with the likes of Dane Swan in Las Vegas, the hair cut could be a sign of his new serious intent in a bid to make up for last year’s finals elimination.

But one of Melbourne’s top croppers has thrown down the gauntlet, offering to restyle Dustin’s locks for nix.

The International Hairstylists Society’s (IHS) hairdresser of the year Michael Piastrino, of Ibiza Hair in Albert Park tried to be diplomatic about his new and old styles ... at first.

“Well, the old haircut is something we wouldn’t do, Mr Piastrino said.

“Some people might describe it as bogan-ish. What is that? A mohawk mullet? I think the length on the back is very outdated.”

“The new cut is not so severe.”

“But ... the way the rear is so pointed — and is that peak on a bit of an angle?”

“Nothing’s blended and there’s no structure to it.

“The front of Dustin’s new haircut is okay, but the back of the haircut has no shape. I’ve never seen a haircut like that to be honest. I’m in utter shock.”

But Michael, could it start a trend?

“Oh God. It’s definitely not on trend,” is all he could say.

But Mr Piastrino says he’s ready to deliver the Richmond livewire a haircut that fits his persona and grabs attention the right way.

Mr Piastrino said their Albert Park salon caters to professional fighters to models and TV celebrities from The Block, to pop stars Anthony Callea and Belinda Carlisle.

“If Dustin came to us, I’d grow the top about 4 inches and grow the sides. I’d give him more of a manly American crew (style) and do more of a fade, a softer line.”

“Adrian Rotolo at our studios is one of Australia’s best colourists and he’s got great ideas.

“If Dustin wants to get noticed on the field, we have professional fighters and models come in — don’t worry, he’s going to get noticed.”

“I’ve got a vision for you Dustin, even though I’m a Collingwood supporter. Dustin, you’re on my radar now.”

Okay, Dustin the offer is open.

Now it’s up to you.
