RICHMOND’S recent dominance over the Brisbane Lions has continued with the Tigers scoring a comfortable 79-point win in a scrappy affair at the Gabba on Saturday night.

In the battle of the big cats, the Tigers won 21.11 (137) to 8.10 (58) for their eighth-straight victory over the Lions, a record stretching back to round seven, 2009.

Looking to atone for their 82-point loss to North Melbourne last weekend, the Lions never looked in the contest, and despite both sides having similar numbers in contested possessions, inside 50s, handballs and clearances, a lack of disposal efficiency and marks inside 50 cost the Lions dearly.

Trent Cotchin (37 disposals) and Bachar Houli (32 disposals) led the way for the Tigers with the Lions assisted by the two Daynes - with Beams and Zorko earning 35 and 27 disposals respectively.

There were seven multiple goal-scorers for the Tigers - with Jack Riewoldt booting four majors - while Zorko booted two goals for the Lions.

Leading by 24 points at halftime, two goals to Riewoldt and one to Nathan Gordon stretched Richmond's advantage to 41 points midway through the third term - the visitors kicking six unanswered goals since Michael Paparone's major inside the opening minute of the second term.

Goals to Zorko and debutant Harris Andrews briefly stopped the rot, until two goals inside five minutes to Shaun Grigg extended the Tigers' lead to 42 points at three-quarter time.

Dustin Martin opened Richmond's account in the final term before goals to Brisbane Lions James Aish and Josh Green were cancelled out by Gordon and Kamdyn McIntosh's second goals.

The Tigers eventually kicked away with further goals to Riewoldt, Ben Griffiths, Shane Edwards and substitute Sam Lloyd, to see the visitors roar back into the top-eight in front of a crowd of 22,441.

The only sour note for the Tigers was a calf injury to Chris Knights midway through the second quarter.

The Tigers can now look ahead to next Friday's match against the Demons while the Lions will host the Eagles.

Richmond has responded to last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs in style, defeating Brisbane by 79 points at the Gabba.

The Tigers has 12 individual goalkickers (seven multiples), led by spearhead Jack Riewoldt, who booted four, while captain Trent Cotchin was dominant with 37 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.

Richmond controlled the second half, kicking 13 goals to four, with Dustin Martin collecting 20 disposals in the last two quarters.

He finished with 29, while fellow midfielders Anthony Miles (29 possessions and seven clearances), Shane Edwards (26) and Brandon Ellis were prolific.

Bachar Houli was brilliant across half back, winning 32 disposals.

The Tigers got the perfect start to the match, with a Ben Griffiths long set shot followed by a running goal from Kamdyn McIntosh, inside the first two minutes.

The Lions responded with two goals of their own, before goals to Steve Morris and Cotchin, who had 12 disposals in the first term, gave the Tigers some breathing space.

Richmond, which enjoyed a 16-9 inside 50 count, led by nine points at the first change.

Scoring was difficult for both teams in the first portion of the second quarter, before four-straight goals by the Tigers, including three in two minutes in red time, gave it a 24-point buffer at half time.

Chris Knights, on his return from almost two years out of the game, kicked a team-lifting goal at the nine-minute mark, however his night was cruelly ended through injury shortly after.

His replacement, Sam Lloyd, had two direct goal assists early in the third quarter, teeing up Riewoldt and Nathan Gordon.

When Riewoldt soccered through his third for the night at the nine-minute mark, the Tigers’ lead was 41 points.

Shaun Grigg pushed forward to kick two late goals, in between majors from the Lions, to help the visitors to a 42-point lead at three-quarter time.

Richmond piled on eight goals in the final term to run out comfortable winners.

2015 AFL season: Richmond defeats Brisbane by 79 points at Gabba in Round 3

RICHMOND roared away from a bumbling and fumbling Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night in a 79-point mauling of the error-riddled home side.

Brisbane’s overall effort was a marginal improvement on last week’s 82-point thrashing at the hands of North Melbourne.

But the Lions’ skill execution was diabolical as they handed scoring opportunities on a platter to the Tigers who cruised to their second win of 2015 while Brisbane remain winless after three rounds.

Richmond extended their advantage at every change as Brisbane were guilty of missing too many targets by foot, making poor decisions under pressure and dropping the footy far too often. Brisbane’s defensive pressure was also far too intermittent.

A host of key team statistics such as clearances, contested possessions, tackles and overall disposals were remarkably close at full-time to show that numbers can sometimes lie. Richmond were the better side by the length of nearby Vulture St.

Tigers captain Trent Cotchin was best-on-ground with 37 disposals and seven clearances, Bachar Houli (32 disposals) was a defensive rock and attacking spark when the game was briefly in dispute and Jack Riewoldt booted four goals in a busy display.

Dayne Beams was a standout for Brisbane with 35 disposals and 11 clearances and received good support from Daniel Rich (23 touches), acting captain Dayne Zorko (27 disposals and two goals) and ruckman Stef Martin (34 hit-outs and 20 touches).

But too little was left to too few for Brisbane who showed all-too-brief glimpses of their best football in between schoolboy mistakes.

Richmond’s win came at a coast with Chris Knights leaving the game before half-time with a leg injury.

Knights was playing his first senior match since Round 7, 2013 when he suffered a horrific knee injury, ripping the patella tendon off the bone.

He kicked a goal to spark Richmond’s second term blitz before limping from the ground and disappearing into the Tigers room before he was officially subbed out of the match minutes later.

Richmond led by 42 points at the last change after Shaun Grigg and Riewoldt booting two goals each as the Tigers virtually ended the match as a contest.

Richmond led by four goals at half-time after a late burst in the second term gave the visitors a well-deserved buffer

Cotchin was outstanding with 19 touches to half-time and was well-supported by Houli who had 16 disposals. The Tigers had eight individual goalkickers for their eight goals up until half-time.

Brisbane closed to within a point of the Tigers early in the second quarter after a Marco Paparone goal but Richmond scorched away from the Lions with four answered goals.

Knights, Dustin Martin, Chris Newman and Riewoldt all cashed in for the Tigers who made the sloppy Lions pay for their mistakes.

Before the red time blitz, it was a relatively even contest albeit a scrappy, arm-wrestle.

The result extends Richmond’s dominance over Brisbane. The last time the Lions beat the Tigers was in 2009. The last time Brisbane defeated Richmond at the Gabba was in 2004.

Brisbane There were more than a few good pundits at the beginning of this season who pegged the Lions as likely improvers. Buoyed by the arrival of some seasoned midfield help in the shape of Dayne Beams and Allen Christensen to complement a deep and quick running brigade, finals action wasn't considered entirely out of the question.

The big question marks remain at either end of the ground. After a shellacking at the hands of Richmond, it's a question we're going to return to again and again. They have big problems in defence, too, where they're missing the steadiness of Joel Patfull and, on this night, the strength and height of Daniel Merrett.

Truthfully, neither of these sides are likely to extend the top teams for too long, simply because they can't hold onto the ball long enough. But the longer the game went, the more the Tigers sliced and diced their feline opponents. It was a mostly even performance, but one player stood, and played, a class above everyone afield.

Trent Cotchin set the tempo of this game for the Tigers, steadying them when they were under attack, then more often than not driving the counter-offensive on the rebound. He finished with 37 possessions, 12 of them in the first quarter, but it was in the second that he tilted the game decisively Richmond's way.

First he floated through a clearance at half-back to steal the ball away, then involved himself twice more to set up Chris Knights, who unfortunately was subbed off shortly after in his first game in two years.

Cotchin then added to his own highlights reel by taking a hanger over a hapless Mitch Robinson.

A few minutes later, under heavy pressure, Cotchin hoofed a ball out of mid-air that landed on Jack Riewoldt's chest 30 metres away. It was lucky, perhaps, but players as good as Cotchin make good fortune look easy.

The Lions just didn't have a player of comparable class in the midfield, either to slow Cotchin down or provide a comparable offensive threat.  Beams had a stack of the ball, but with captain Tom Rockliff still nursing broken ribs, Beams is having to do more work inside the packs, without Pearce Hanley running past on the outside.

It would have been dangerous to discount the Lions at that point – they're a momentum side, quick and fit, capable of rapid scoring surges late in games – but it was going to take a mighty turnaround from about 18 out of their 22 players.

Only Beams, Daniel Rich, Dayne Zorko and Stefan Martin could hold their heads up.

No one else could truly say they had an influence on the contest. The statistics weren't a mile apart – contested ball, inside 50s, clearances and tackles were all close enough – but what didn't show up was the Lions' lack of confidence to kick to a viable target, or their inability to hit one in the first place.

Speaking of statistics, Riewoldt's game didn't look eye-catching on paper, but his presence loomed larger the longer the game progressed, not just for his marking and scoring power, but for his work rate upfield. Ben Griffiths was a more than handy alternative target. Ten other players shared  the scoring load.

The Lions just don't have that sort of firepower. Daniel McStay kicked an early goal and was then unsighted. Brent Staker, so unlucky with injury for so long, is struggling to keep pace. A raw first-gamer, Harris Andrews, had easily the best game of the three talls.

It got nasty in the last quarter when Justin Clarke kicked 40 metres backwards into the teeth of goal for Dustin Martin to waltz in for his second goal. The once-feared "Gabbatoir" felt more like a morgue at that point, the Tigers piling on eight for the last quarter to bury the home side.
