Tim Watson on Tigers must-win

Richmond simply must defeat Geelong on Saturday at the MCG if they want to play finals football this season, according to Tim Watson.

At 2-2 after a soft opening schedule the Tigers are in a precarious position with a run of games to come that will certainly dictate their year and possible the coach’s future.

“No I don’t think they will make the eight if they lose this week,” said Watson on SEN radio.

“Their next five weeks after Geelong are North Melbourne, Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Essendon and Fremantle – a very tough time coming their way.”

Polarising big man Tyrone Vickery will play his first game since he was suspended for hitting Dean Cox last year.

There will be pressure on him to kick goals in what Damien Hardwick described as an ‘impotent’ forward line last week.

“I guess they’ve decided that Vickery gives them a bit more flexibility, he’s a bit more agile than Hampson,” added Watson.

Robbo questions Tigers talent

Mark Robinson says the next month of football will show if this Richmond list really does have the depth to be top four contenders in the future, says Mark Robinson.

The Tigers are just 2-2 after a soft start, losing to the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, and another season could easily be wasted if things don’t change soon.

“This game on Saturday is just enormous, enormous,” said Robinson on SEN radio of their match against Geelong on Saturday.

“Are they capable of winning a premiership or did we get overawed when they came home by winning nine?

“They were 3-10 when the pressure was on.”

Already the pressure is on coach Damien Hardwick and history suggests that when things turn ugly at Punt Rd, someone is usually moved on.

The chief football writer for the Herald Sun believes making a rash move on Hardwick is not the answer, but they need to do better at drafting in young talent.

“They can’t start again (with the list), they’ve just got to keep improving, but they haven’t got enough talent there,” said Robinson.

“Why did they go after Jack Trengove?

“The guy has got a busted foot, he lost all his speed, he’s a hard nut and he was struggling with the speed of the game and Richmond were considering him.”

Mooney points finger at Vickery

In his first game of the season Tyrone Vickery will be playing for his career when he steps onto the MCG this Saturday to face Geelong, says Cameron Mooney.

The 24-year-old will more than likely replace the injured Ben Griffiths in his first game since he was suspended and heavily criticised for his hit on Dean Cox last year.

“This is his chance and almost a career-defining game for Ty Vickery, this is the way he has to look at it,” said Mooney on SEN radio.

“They had so many inside 50s last week and couldn’t take a mark, this man needs to clunk a few to restore his career.

“He kicked four last week, but we know the difference between VFL and AFL.”

I thought Geelong were 1 and 3. Doesn't that mean it's more important for them to win?
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.
